Chapter 8:
Proverty Hero
As my weekend and shifts of taking orders of pizza ended the last day of October came in, and an excitement came at the chance of seeing you. Before the special day came I was thinking of dressing up for the occasion. I haven’t dressed up for Halloween since elementary school. I was a blanket ghost, a toilet paper mummy, and a ninja, I don’t know how I could top any of those costumes. On Friday I had heard some murmurs about the pretty girl’s costume.
“Hey you girls gonna dress up or anything .”
“What for, Halloween?”
“No, Hanukkah.”
“Girl you didn’t have to do her like that.”
“Haha, sorry you've just been so spaced out recently that I couldn't resist.”
“It’s alright.”
“Why have you been so spaced out? Something happen.”
“Nah just something on my mind, well nevermind that I think I’ll dress as Charlie Brown.”
“Nah you ain’t changing the subject, it’s a guy isn’t it. Isn’t it?” At this comment my ears were very peeked.
“It’s nothing, it’s nothing.” After that I forgot what happened. Man I’d like to be your snoopy, but I don’t even know how’d I get a snoopy costume. Well a man can dream, a man can dream. Maybe I’ll do a toilet paper mummy again, but do it a little better so the toilet paper doesn’t just fall off me midway through trick or treating, and then that's when I fell asleep.
When my alarm clock rang that day I smacked it half unconscious and went back to sleep so I was in some trouble, luckily I woke up 20 mins later after a strange sense of urgency stuck in the back of my mind blew up. If I just ran to the bus stop now I'd probably make it in time to just barely make it for first period. I took my tooth brush, bread, and a roll of toilet paper to go and ran out with my school bag. It was a pretty cold day I found as I ran to the bus stop. I was definitely under dressed, plus it was real windy that day, and lucky me the bus was around the corner, I guess were keeping that perfect attendance.
As the bus moved I saw the Halloween decorations outside. This year people really stepped it up, some houses were fully dressed up with graves, zombies, skeletons, and jack o lanterns. One house looked like a spooky mansion with a spooky arch, I think that house always dressed as clowns and gave out candy, then another house with the best looking jack o lanterns, they were actually spooky, not just smiling pumpkins with triangles for eyes. Well they had triangles for eyes but they were just spooky. About 45 minutes later I arrived at my stop, and ran to school barely making it before the bell rang and homeroom started.
After catching my breath for a few seconds in my seat the announcements go on, first the pledge, and then the announcements.
“This is Ms.Falice your vice principal good morning to everyone, please stand for the pledge… On to today’s announcement’s with once again my co-host Samuel Li.”
“Good morning to everyone, and also a very happy Halloween to you all. Today anyone wanting to join the Drama club please report to 241 today to learn about plays, and anyone with a passion for acting. There will also be a bake sale today at lunch today to help out the Sam Houtas program for at risk teens. Lastly, today's lunch will be barbecue chicken with mac and cheese today. That is all, have a good rest of your day everyone.”
My mood today was weird, I wouldn’t say it was good or bad but it was a breath of fresh air from last week. My mind felt refreshed from last week, well it might get cooked up before the end of the week. I only ever had one class with Natalie, it was my very last class history. Whenever I’d enter the class I’d get real nervous, especially waiting in the hall for the door to open. Class went by fast today, and before I knew it it was time for history. We had to wait extra long for the door today. Our teacher came rushing in and opened the door to let us in.
“Alright come in guys. Go to where your group is, the groups are on the board.” Ohh it’s another one of these today, let’s see if I’m in the group with. I walk in and take a look at the blackboard, and I see group 1 not me, group 4 not me, and then group 3 Owen, Sam, Audria, Tupac, and Natalie. Ohh my goodness it’s real. Well nothing to think about, just gotta go in. Our group’s tables were arranged in two rows of threes. I sat in the front, and she walked to the back three seats with a yellow button up with a black stripe in it. After she sat Audria sat next to her and I sat next to the other dudes.
“Good morning guys, how's your day been, good?”
A good group of kids reply with a “yeah.”
“Well take a look at the do now, and discuss it with your neighbors.” Well this is less exciting, I’m stuck with the dudes. Then after a brief share out our history lesson continued on Britain’s voting system, quite exciting. After the finale came some actual group work.
“With the final 10 minutes we got I want you all ya’ll to work with your groups to fill out on the sheet which regimes are the most democratic.” We gathered up and put our heads together.
“Okay guys I think the first is the UK” Natalies started, taking initiative. “ Then Nigeria, Mexico, and Iran last I think. What do you guys think.” To be honest I’m pretty sure everyone here pays more attention in class than me so I didn’t jump to step in.
Audria stepped in and said “I think It’s probably Russia 2nd last, and then China next, since I think Russia has more democratic elections I think? Yeah I’m not too sure but it’s probably right.”
“Hmmm, I think so too, what about you guys?” Natalie said.
“Uhhh me.” She surprised me, I thought I was just gonna stay outta the conversation.
“Yeah you.” She said
“Uhhh I think what you guys said was right.”
“Yeah me too.” Owen finally stepped in too.
“Okay we should win then.” She said jokingly
After that it was time to leave and the bell rung loudly.
“All right guys just leave your sheets in the front and have a good rest of your day, and have a happy Halloween.”
As I walked out of school I thought she seemed slightly more jittery today than usual, and took more of the initiative today. Or maybe it’s all just in my head. Then I do the usual and leave seeing Damien on the way out
“Yo, you going trick or treating.”
“Yeah, you?”
“Ye, free candy, great holiday.”
“What's your costume man?” I said. He pulled out one of those white masks you’d see at a store for cheap and put it over his head.
“I’m a robber. What about you.”
“Mummy.” I pulled out my toilet paper. “Imma put on my costume, help me out real quick.” After about 7 minutes, and the toilet paper ripping a couple times we went trick-or- treating together around the area for about an hour. It was fun, I hadn’t hung out with anyone for a while. After that a feeling came back making me feel more lost than ever.
