Chapter 5:
Kanojo wa Koe dake - A Love Beyond the Screen
It was on Monday of the second week of the second school year when Airi Fujimoto just finished her breakfast toast and packed her bento into her schoolbag. Then she left her home—a spacious, modern two-room apartment in a five-story building called Sunrise Residence—to go to school and on her way to meet with her best friend Hana Kanzaki.
"Heyooo!"
"Hii!"
Both greeted each other and hugged before continuing their way to the Midoridai High. Hana was so excited for the new week that you could see her eyes sparkle with excitement.
"Wow, I wish I could have such excitement for school as you have Hana-chan" Airi said a little envious.
"Haaah, I love the fresh air and spring in general, and I enjoy going to school with you even more than that. Kinda sad that we're not together in the same class as in previous times Ai-chan"
Ai-chan was the nickname Airi got from Hana. She really liked it. That's why she has the name Ai at the end of her streaming name HikariAi.
Hana and Airi only needed twenty minutes to get to school and walked to it.
As they reached Midoridai High they said goodbye and went to their classrooms.
"Bye Ai-chan! Till lunch break!" said Hana and Airi said "See you later!" back to her.
The school bell rang and with that the second week's lessons started.
Until lunch break there wasn't much going on. Ren and Haruto quipped a bit in the back row while doing the tasks given by the teacher and Airi sometimes looked at them when she got bored because she already finished the tasks. But with the end of the last lesson before lunch break Mister Tanaka wanted to talk to Ren and Airi.
"I wanted to inform you, now that you two are the class president and vice president, that you have to plan for the summer festival before the summer vacation. So you have to find out what the class wants to do on that festival and you have to plan it out. It's to prepare you and the class for the third year because as you two should know, they have to do something really special to show their gratitude for graduating here, at the Midoridai High." said Mister Tanaka but before Ren and Airi could think about something to say Mister Tanaka continued, "So it would be good to starting today. You'll have to sit together to make some plans that you can then bring up in class to vote for. But it's also fine if you're starting a bit later but don't underestimate the planning."
"Yes, Mister Tanaka. We will take this into consideration and will start planning today." said Airi with no hesitation at all. Ren, however, was very unsettled by this. He and Airi had to make plans for the summer festival and have to sit together to plan this? He thought being vice president meant he only had to take Airi's place if she's sick or something like that.
"Umm, yes." Ren stammered.
"Okay, you two can now go into your lunch break. Have a nice break." said Mister Tanaka and left the classroom of class 2-C.
"Hey Ren, where do you live?" Airi asked out of nowhere for Ren.
"What? Why do you want to know? Umm, ermm, I live at the Yumenari River south of Midoridai. It's a bit far to walk, so I'm coming here by bike." answered Ren seemingly embarrassed.
Now, Airi flushed bright red too, as she now realized what she asked for.
"Ah, I only wanted to know because I've club activities today, so I wondered if you would like to meet at someone's place." she said, but made the situation only worse.
"But, I mean, it's better if we meet in the library. It's on your way, right?" continued Airi.
"Well, umm, it's only ten minutes by bike so that should be okay."
"Okay, then we have a plan. I think I'm finished with everything at five o'clock in the evening."
"Wow, you have that much to do in the athletics club?"
"Well, I've also got to change and shower so it takes a little while."
And from one embarrassing situation they went full diving into the next.
"Oh, okay, haha. I'll be at the library at five then." said Ren while pretending he didn't hear a thing.
"Thanks. Have a nice break." wished Airi Ren and then went to see Hana to eat lunch with, while Ren stayed in the classroom and ate his lunch alone. Haruto was out eating with his other friends in the cafeteria.
The school bell rang a last time and school was over. Everyone packed their bags and left the classroom except for those who had class duty. As Ren and Haruto went to leave the classroom, Airi told Ren "See you later, yeah?" and so Haruto confronted him at the school gates.
"What does 'See you later' mean, Ren? What have I missed while I was gone?" asked Haruto.
"Well Mister Tanaka said to us that we should start with the preparations for the summer festival and so Airi wanted to meet with me in the library." answered Ren while his face turned a little redder than usual as he spoke about the library.
"Hrmm? Do I sense that more than that happened?" asked Haruto suspicious.
"No, I don't know what you mean? I mean she only had a slip of the tongue."
"And that's why you're getting red in the face?" Come on, what was that special?"
"Man it's embarrassing because it's not really anything. She only asked where I live so we eventually could meet there or something like this."
"Huh, is that so? Sounds weird. You two don't really know each other. But maybe she didn't mean anything with that and it really was a slip of the tongue."
"That's what I'm saying!" said Ren outraged. "But you don't want to listen to me. You're always so curious!"
"Well that's because I worry about you my friend. And I'm happy to see that everything's fine."
Ren calmed down—even though he wasn't really mad or extremely outraged, so to say—and both laughed.
"I'm glad that I can call you a friend Haru."
"Same for me" said Haruto in response.
"You're happy that you can call yourself a friend? That's pretty selfish and sad." joked Ren.
Haruto burst into laughter.
"Damn, that one was good." and with that good mood, they both went home.
It was ten minutes before five o'clock in the evening when Ren arrived at the library. He was nervous, because of the whole situation—a new situation. But he couldn't really think about it because it wasn't even three minutes gone by when Airi arrived at the library.
"Hey, I thought you're finished at five o'clock? Why are you here so early?" greeted and asked Ren.
"Hi! Did you wait long?" came back from Airi.
"No, not at all. I also arrived a few minutes prior to you."
"Ah okay, so to answer your question, I'm earlier here than I said I would because I was finished training early and the girls knew I had something to do so they let me go early."
"Ah that's nice to hear. How was training?"
"Good, but I'm hungry now."
"Oh, should I make a bento for next time? So you'll have something to eat after school and your club."
"Oh, you don't have to." said Airi but Ren insisted and with the end of that conversation, they both went into the library and started the planning.
