Chapter 6:

At The Library

Kanojo wa Koe dake - A Love Beyond the Screen

It was in the library of Midoridai—a rather large library with around one hundred thousand books and other media in its shelves—on a Monday evening. Ren Sato and Airi Fujimoto met there to plan the summer festival, which takes place before the start of the summer holidays. Until that day, they hadn't done anything together at all so it was a little bit hard to start the planning.
"So Sato-san, what do we want to do at the summer festival?" Airi asked Ren.
"I don't know, I've never done this before and why do we have to start today? The student council doesn't even want the proposals yet." Ren was slightly confused but not particularly unhappy about this meeting.
"Because we always can submit proposals to the student council and if we do it now, we can choose anything we want and the other classes have to choose from the rest that's left. It's pretty simple isn't it?"
"Well of course but it's all a bit too fast for me to keep up with what is happening right now."
"What do you mean?" Airi asked.
"Umm, you know I'm not very social? I mean you can literally see that I only have one friend and that's Kanda-kun. And it's not even like we're on equal footing or something like that. He's the total opposite of me. He has more friends than me, is more social and so on."
"Hrmm, I get what you mean. Yeah, I saw that. You don't seem to stand out that much."
"Yes, and that's what I want. I don't want to stand out so much like Kanda-kun wants. I only want to enjoy my life with games, live streams and a little family time."
"But maybe if you stand out a bit, you would make more friends. How does anyone not want any friends?"
"That's too complicated to say." Ren answered to Airi's question and it really was complicated.
It's not like Ren did have only Haruto Kanda as his friend. In his childhood, Ren had a few friends but at some point they all started to turn against him and to mock him. Ren didn't know why, and neither did Haruto but Haruto helped Ren a lot in these hard times and so their bond strengthened a lot. Now, Ren doesn't really like to communicate with others if it's not necessary, but with Haruto and his family. So it meant overcoming a lot of things for him to talk with Airi at that moment.
"Sorry to bother you with what I asked. I didn't intend to open old wounds or something like this."
Airi apologized with a tone of sympathy.
"But I think I get now why you're all alone and by yourself." Airi continued.
"That sounds sad, but I guess it is sad for an outsider." Ren said.
"So you don't really have a problem with that?"
"No, not really. As I said, I don't want to stand out."
"Hrm, okay." Airi said. She didn't really know how to go on after this but then she continued.
"We know a little more about each other, that's good, but we also have to keep planning so what could we do? Maybe a café or a haunted house?"
"I mean they're good ideas so we should consider them. Maybe we should write down the ideas so we can present them to the class."
"Oh, that's a good idea. I almost forgot." Airi said with a smile on her beautiful face.
She rummaged in her school bag and took out her pencil case and notebook. Then she tucked one of her golden strands behind her left ear and began writing down their ideas. Ren thought Airi looked really pretty while writing. And no one could doubt his thoughts. She was also described as a beauty by others at their school. That's because of her wonderful brown hair with golden strands and her amber eyes. On top of that she had a really good figure because of her athletic activities after school. Ren was fascinated by her but so was Airi too. Airi was really happy to get to know Ren. She never spoke with him once but was wondering what kind of person he's like.
After they finished collecting ideas they talked about what they wanted to do after that.
"Haaah, finally done. I underestimated how much work collecting ideas is." Airi said.
"Yeah, I think we could've done it quicker than an hour for just ten ideas." Ren answered.
Suddenly they heard something grumbling.
"Oh, sorry." Airi said embarrassed. "I'm very hungry now."
"Ah, so we should bring this meeting to a quick end, but what do we do now? We have to present this, right?"
"Yes, I can present it in front of the class if you don't want to. It would be otherwise better for us two to present it."
"I know but can you do that alone please? I think everyone knows that I'm not the type to talk."
"Okay, we have a plan." Airi said while packing everything into her school bag and preparing to leave.
"It was fun to work and talk with you Sato-san. I'm going home now so see you tomorrow!" Airi said and went as quickly as she could outside the library and in the direction of the Sunrise Residence, where she lived.
"Okay, bye." Ren said a little overwhelmed. He grabbed his things and went outside the library too. He could see Airi running to the next convenience store in the distance, so apparently she couldn't wait until at home to eat something. Then Ren got on his bicycle and rode home. On his way he felt a warm feeling and it wasn't because of the riding he did. He felt like he accomplished something and he was feeling really happy. He also had fun talking with Airi and doing the planning. He looked forward to the next meeting they had. He was sure they had another one.
Arriving at the two-story residence of Ren Sato—called his home—he opened the door and was greeted with a sister running at him and hugging him tight. So tight he lost his breath for a moment.
"Big broooother! I thought you were kidnapped by this classmate you wanted to meet with! Why did it take soo long?" Yumeko Sato said while hugging Ren.
"Ouch, ouch, ouch, I can't breathe if you hug me this tight!" Ren said.
"Oh no, I didn't want to hurt you Ren-chan. Please forgive your cutest little sister in the whole world." Yumeko said while sticking her tongue out and winking with one eye.
"You know that only you call yourself that and that you make an unbelievably awkward pose?" Ren retorted.
"But I will have my mercy with you and will forgive you. Why would you think I got kidnapped anyway?"
"Because you don't train much and so you don't have enough strength to defend yourself."
"Huh? That's what you're thinking of me? That I'm some kind of weakling?"
"Heh, heh." was the only thing Yumeko said in response and so she went upstairs and into her room. Ren, on the other hand, went into the kitchen where the dinner was already prepared by his sister. Yumeko made tasty food. She was a natural when it came to housekeeping things like making food or doing the laundry. It took Ren a while until he got good with housekeeping. He ate dinner—a normal but tasty miso soup—Yumeko made and also went upstairs to watch some anime in his room until the day came to an end.
