Chapter 16:

The Five Kingdoms III: Elcipsed Treasure War

Kingdom of light: Stories untold

At the dawn of the new day,

Tensions broke,

And so, did war…

Months after the final battle against Vacthius, Queen Aurum passed away due to the drawbacks of using the forbidden magic. Her daughter took the throne, Queen Opalus. It was hard to believe that the two were related as mother and daughter. Aurum was a caring person who put the needs of her people first; Opalus did no such thing. She enforced the rules, taxed more from the people and was an overall harsh ruler. And then ideas began swimming through her mind, ideas of expansion, growing the Treasure kingdom and extending its borders. Opalus would go to war with Luminos and the Shadow Kingdoms. Queen Opalus forced her soldiers to fight; if they refused, they would die. It was brutal. Soldiers of light and shadow fought to keep the invaders out; the war would span 25 years due to an unexpected decision made by Opalus. The magic that can kill gods isn’t the only forbidden type; this one in particular is more well-known, and it's widely shunned by all. The soldiers of the Treasure army were given a token; they were told it was a memento of sorts, to keep them motivated, but to Opalus, it served another purpose. Opalus used the corps of the dead as the base. Using the token of atherium, she was linked to all of them. The dead would be brought to life as mindless zombies, their bodies mutated, atherium made up parts of the body where flesh and bone once lay.

The undead had strength beyond anything anyone had ever seen before, and when struck down, they would simply rise again. The only way to kill them was through magic that was close to their level of strength. But even without the corps, Opalus was able to make pure atherium soldiers, which raised concern for the First Queen. Aetherium was a metal not found on Star; she would address this when she had time. The war dragged on because of this. The First Queen attempted to bring the war to an end on her own, but Opalus was more prepared than anyone expected. During their confrontation, Opalus was unexpectedly able to channel the power of the Ascender; using it, she was able to overpower the First Queen's light. Opalus landed a fatal blow, forcing the First Queen to retreat, essentially removing her from the war for the time being. The war would only come to an end when Opalus’s daughter led an unforeseen siege on her castle, with the aid of the First Queen, they were able to breach the defence, where Opalus would fall at the hands of her own kin.

The war had finally ended, both sides were exhausted, but their prayers were finally answered. Soldiers got to go home to their families after having been away from them for so long; this was all they wanted. The daughter ascended the throne and got to work on fixing what her mother broke. She managed to repair the relationship between the two kingdoms at the cost of the Treasure Kingdom's army, a drastic measure, but the young queen understood; they were to take apart whatever remained, and any and all weaponry was to be locked away beneath the castle. The First Queen also took Opalus’s atherium shard, where she got it from, nobody knows, but it was safer in someone else's hands. The new Queen would spend the rest of her life rebuilding her kingdom and its standing. She would pass away due to age, passing the throne to her granddaughter, Aurum.
