Chapter 21:

The First Day to Examine

Bio-Mage

“Yooo.”
“Good morning.”

Yuuichirou and Zuina walked into the hospital room assigned to Kay, both showing a light happiness that the madness is turning back to their comfortable oddities.

“Hey, you’re finally up.” Getsurin announced, with an equally light smile.

“Yup, but they won’t let me leave yet, because they thought I’d be bedridden for a minimum of four days, but one was plenty for me and that really confused them.” Yuuichirou explained.

“Yeah, they want to be sure that his fractures are actually healing.” Zuina added.

“At least they’ll let you walk around.” Getsurin remarked.

“Well, that’s what they think.” Yuuichirou mocked, while the others laughed slightly. “She’s still out cold, huh?” He then gestured to Kay.

“Yup, doctors say she's not even in a coma, she's literally asleep. ‘An extreme case of hypersomnia’, they said.” Getsurin promptly explained.

“That answers the light snoring.” Zuina mentioned to lighten the mood.

“But this whole time? What’s that? 40 hours?” Yuuichirou asked in disbelief.

“Yeah, they might hook her up to a feeding tube if she doesn't wake up soon.” Getsurin added, with mild annoyance. “Oh, yeah, take a look at this.” He got up to walk on the other side of Kay’s bed to show her face to the others. “Notice anything interesting?” He asked as he opened one of Kay’s still sleeping eyelids.

“I don't remember her exact eye color, but they definitely weren't purple before. They’re supposed to be brown, right?” Zuina immediately recognized.

“Yup, dark brown, however during the fight, both of her eyes turned into a darker shade, but it was the whole eye. Just like that mage. One solid color.” Getsurin noted.

“Her eyes were super dilated, I don’t think they were ever purple.” Yuuichirou added with curiosity.

“Something changed in her that night.” Zuina speculated, with some worry. “She was pretty emotional, not sad but very happy, just overjoyed really, to the point of tears.” She recalled.

“There’s no doubt about that, her power that she had was beyond that Bio Mage. It's almost like they were the same, or something.” Getsurin speculated.

“Maybe Bio Mages have phases? First is erratic like what Getsurin first encountered, then with more Viscera, they get primal and powerful.” Zuina pondered.

“Like what happened with me. And if I wasn’t stopped, I would’ve turned into whatever that thing was.” Yuuichirou added. “Except, she doesn't have a history of addiction…” He then realized.

“Right, she would have gone on a rampage the first day, if that were the case. Kay was different somehow: She showed all of those symptoms, but didn't act at all like what we've seen.” Getsurin recognized.

“She was a little reckless, sure, but she was completely in control.” Zuina identified. “Ahhh, so many questions!” She howled, to then sit at the edge of Kay’s bed to pout.

“Anyway,” Yuuichirou announced with a smile. “Did you see the news? Another epic battle went on.” He then said.

“Yeah, somewhere is Saitama, right?” Getsurin remarked, as Yuuichirou confirmed. “There's just no way that’s a coincidence.” He then sighed with intense suspicion.

“You think there’s something bigger going on?” Yuuichirou asked.

“My gut says that it's a coincidence, but my brain is telling me otherwise… I don’t know, Zuina?” Getsurin mentioned looking at her for any ideas.

“Well, I don’t mean to get conspiratorial, but…” Zuina slowly remarked, pulling out her notebook. “So, they just announced some new legislation, let's see… To start, a curfew has been implemented, tax additions have been assigned for something called the ‘Energy Restoration Contingency Act’, they’ve abolished several Anti yakuza laws, now they’re offering fully funded residencies for international people with Biochemists or Microbiologist background, and—!”

“Okay—Ina, we get the picture, there’s something odd going on.” Yuuichirou paused Zuina’s worried enthusiasm.

“Hehe, sorry, the main thing is that this has all happened within a few weeks, things are moving incredibly fast. Even under the guise of national emergency. Because the government seems to be treating this like conflict, not some type of outbreak.” Zuina explained.

“That’s a good point, this feels like we're about to go to war or something. When they should be acting as if this was an epidemic of disease or worse.” Yuuichirou expanded on the idea.

“Well there have been a number of unprovoked attacks.” Getsurin pointed out.

“But those were still domestic. Monsters or not, foreign militaries shouldn’t be getting involved yet.” Zuina rebuttaled. “Maybe this just is their reaction to all the madness, but it seems like they’ve had a plan ready if events this specific were to occur.” She questioned.

“So…” Getsurin leaned back in his chair. “They’re hiding something, right?” He then asked.

“Probably?” Zuina replied with a crooked smile. “I’ve reviewed the Government’s policies for Disease Control, National Security and our Self-Defense Forces. It's like whatever is happening right now, it's like they're several things mixed together with some unique, unknown additions.” She finished.

“So we can’t trust anyone, is what you're saying?” Getsurin lamented.

“No, we just need to be ready for whatever it is the government is getting ready for.” Yuuichirou proposed.

“Yeah, and personally, my main concern is what they’ll do with people like the three of you.” Zuina mentioned with uncertainty. “Oh, I’m getting a call, it must be Kay’s Granddad, I’ve been talking with him over the phone, he thinks I’m Kay.” She said with guilt, getting her phone out.

“Oh, it's from my phone, and it's Moku.” Zuina looked at Getsurin and Yuuichirou with some confusion.

“Hey, Moku… Yes. Yeah one sec.” Zuina talked as he placed her phone outward and on speaker.

“Hey, everyone.” Moku announced over the phone.

“Hey, Moku, what's up?” Yuuichirou answered.

“Not sure how to say this, but I got some alarming news… The spies escaped.” Moku mentioned while the others had speechless shock locked in their eyes. “And no, I have no clue how it happened, the door to the container was wide open.” He explained.

“Did you investigate how they did?” Getsurin asked.

“Nope, I’m more cautious than that. I have a few cameras pointed at the container and the roads to it. I’m looking over the footage of the roads right now, but the one pointing at the container shows that it's open.” Moku elaborated.

“So, what should we do?” Zuina asked, as she showed the others the pictures Moku sent.

“Hang tight while I look over this footage of the roads, maybe get a lead of how they got out.” Moku remarked. “And stay in the hospital if you can, probably the safest place for us.” He added.

“Sounds good, keep us posted.” Said Yuuichirou.

“And stay safe!” Zuina quickly asked.

“Sure thing, you do the same.” Moku agreed and hung up.

A collective sigh fell over the three. Unsure of what are the implications that the spies escaped. For Yuuichirou to stand up.

“Well, no reason to worry about it on an empty stomach.” Yuuichirou bolstered nonchalantly.
