Chapter 15:

Dragon Twist

Twist

Junnosuke Arai was in a holding cell, and he didn't know why.
He'd woken up there and had asked the police about where his parents where and when they'd take him to see them, but they hadn't given him an answer.
He'd been relatively calm about the situation, up until the point he saw the old man running past his cell. The old man had stopped and stared directly at him. Junnosuke still remembered how intense the man's gaze had been, how he hated the feeling of the old man's eyes groping over him, as if he were some kind of toy.
The police had run off chasing the old man, and Junnosuke desperately wanted them to catch him; he'd heard gunshots a few moments later, but judging by how the police had kept running and shouting over each other, he assumed that they hadn't managed to stop the old man.
     Ramon.
He knew the psycho's name. It stained his mind like ink on a shirt. He wanted to scrub every image of the old man from his mind. A thought came to him as he realized how he felt about the old man.
He hated him. He opened his eyes and took in a sharp breath as he thought about how the police were chasing him. He was a fugitive, and the police were shooting at him. That meant that the police wanted him dead, too. Junnosuke looked down at his hands and then at the cell walls around him. The police would eventually take him back to his parents, of course, but they were probably going to get rid of Ramon so that he'd be safe. His vision started to lose focus and the room swirled around him.
The police probably wouldn't mind if he tried to help them. After all, he had his own powers; he could help them track down Ramon and kill him. He could simply turn into a dragon, leave his cell, and find that old man with the police. He'd kill him and be a hero; they would recognize him as an ally of justice, like the main characters in all the manga he read. Junnosuke's breathing sped up.
He felt his body rippling and twisting as his jaws snapped out with the force of a bear trap. Sharp teeth sprouted from his mouth as his eyes spun wildly. He could feel himself becoming more powerful with every passing second. His breaths became slower and deeper as the transformation worked its way through him, and with each moment the cell seemed to get smaller and smaller.
His skin became covered in shining black scales and his body increased in size, larger and larger, until he forced his way out of the cell through brute strength. As the cell bars clattered on the ground in front of him, he felt something building up in his throat.
A few police officers ran to his cell, and were greeted by the sight of a black shining dragon vomiting and coughing up a large, round, and rubbery egg. It spat the egg out on the ground in its cell, before redirecting its attention towards the two police officers standing before it. They pulled out their handguns, but before they could pull the triggers, the dragon barreled past them and ran out one of the open windows of the police station. The police officers watched as the dragon kept going, and going, and going; it must have been a few hundred feet long, and when they looked out the window to see where it was going, they realized that it had gotten bigger and thicker as soon as it had exited the police station.
Junnosuke scanned the rooftops of Tokyo wildly, with each of his eyes darting around like a chameleon's, before realizing that he could just smell him out. He twirled in the air as he called to mind the old man's scent, and when he found it, he let loose an earth shaking roar.
The police officers on the ground stopped.
Schoolchildren cried out for their parents.
People in their cars began trying to drive away from the black dragon in the sky.
In a university hospital, the Arai family watched the breaking news with tears in their eyes as their son was confirmed to still be alive.
Junnosuke dove down and began soaring as quickly as he could across the rooftops, tracing Ramon's scent. He knew the old man wasn't far, and he wanted blood.
Ramon saw the dragon as soon as it burst out from the police station. All his humor suddenly disappeared.
"Oh kid, don't make me do this..." He muttered as Junnosuke began flying straight towards him. He reached for where his revolver normally was, and patted nothing. "Crap." He looked back to Junnosuke, who was charging him, and was filled with an emotion he hadn't felt in a long time.
     Unadulterated fear.
     He was unarmed.
Unequipped to deal with the monster that was aiming to kill him.
For once, he was not the hunter.
As the monster bore its shining white teeth and flew directly at him, Ramon had an epiphany.
"Percy, I owe you a lot of drinks." At the last second, he dove out of the way of Junnosuke's sharp teeth. He took advantage of the fact that Junnosuke had a large body and began running alongside it in the opposite direction. If he wanted to have a chance of subduing the kid, he needed his gear, and to get that he needed to get to the police station.
Junnosuke hated missing. The stupid old man was faster than he seemed, and he wanted to sink his teeth into the old man's ribs and watch him bleed out on the floor in pieces. He roared again and tried twisting over himself to maneuver better, but he wasn't flexible enough to do that, and so he made do with making a long, slow, coiling turn in order to reach Ramon.
Ramon thought about his epiphany as he kept running across rooftops and towards the police station.
He hated what he'd done to those girls, and he still hadn't forgiven himself for Nova Scotia, but now that he couldn't fight back at all, he had a new appreciation for the people he was saving. People who could never fight back; they had families, hopes, and dreams too. His desire for Twisters to be reformed was nice, and so was the idea that Twisters didn't have to be regulated at all, but in his current moment of panic, he held a new appreciation for his own work of eradicating them. In most cases, as Percy had said, what he'd done had been a good and necessary thing.
He looked over his shoulder to see Junnosuke had finished turning around and was charging back at him. He looked ahead of himself and saw that the police station wasn't much farther away. Ramon calculated how long it would take Junnosuke's jaws to chop him in half, and started counting down as he ran.
Junnosuke roared again as his teeth ached for the chance to snap the old man in half and watch his crimson blood splatter out like a bomb. He got closer and closer to the old man, opened his mouth, and snapped his jaws shut on air.
Ramon had fallen flat on the ground of the roof. Junnosuke roared in frustration as the old man stood up and ran towards the police station. At that same moment, he began feeling something biting and stinging him. His wild eyes looked out to see what was hurting him, and he saw that the police were shooting at him. He couldn't believe it; he was helping them, and they were treating him like he was some kind of monster. Junnosuke realized that he needed to teach them about respect, and he twisted himself over in order to start approaching them.
While the police were distracted by the giant, black-scaled dragon that was probably going to try and eat them, Ramon jumped back into the police station through the broken window. He ran downstairs and read the signs to try and figure out where the evidence lockers were. He saw two police officers, but they quickly ran outside the building in response to some radio chatter. With no one else in sight, he ran through the police station's halls and into the evidence room. He'd arrived eight hours ago, and he wasn't familiar with police work, but after a few moments of tearing out and rifling through drawers, he managed to get his necessities.
He strapped his revolver on, shoved his silver bullets into his pocket, and grabbed his purified salt, before he ran out of the room and back upstairs. He was about to leave when he blitzed past Junnosuke's cell and saw something strange.
It was a rubbery, fleshy, snake-like egg, and inside it he could see the outline of a boy.
