Chapter 16:

Perceptions

Twist

The dragon roared at the police officers as it snatched up a car in its jaws. There was no one inside it, but Junnosuke made a show of chomping it in half and letting the parts fall on the ground. The police tried to shoot down the dragon, but their shots didn't matter. Their bullets glanced off the dragon's scales.
     Junnosuke reveled in how powerful he felt. He hadn't explored his potential when he'd curled around the Skytree, so once the police started firing at him and trying to hurt him, he realized he could fight back and show everyone how strong he was.
     His wild eyes settled on one of the policemen who was slightly taller than the others. He wouldn't kill him; he would tear off an arm, but he wouldn't kill him. With another roar, he twisted out of the sky and dove towards the street. The policemen all made a show of ducking or leaping away, but the tall officer was slightly too slow. Junnosuke lowered one of his short forelegs and made to swipe at the officer. He realized, too late to alter his course, that he would end up actually lopping off the officer's head.
     Junnosuke didn't care.
     At that moment, the dragon vanished.
     The policemen looked around, wondering what had happened. After a few seconds, the lead officer commanded them to split up into several teams, dedicated primarily to finding Junnosuke and secondarily to finding Ramon. After the teams ran off and began sweeping the neighborhood, the remaining policemen ran back inside to see how much damage had been dealt to the interior. Once they entered, they heard Junnosuke's voice screaming out for help from the second floor. Four policemen ran up the stairs with their guns drawn, but by the time they made it up there, Ramon and Junnosuke were gone. The only thing left was a rather disgusting cocoon of flesh in Junnosuke's cell.
~~~
      Ramon carried Junnosuke in his arms, wrapped in the blanket he'd snagged from the interior of the holding cell. Junnosuke kicked, screamed, and flailed against Ramon's grip, but he was exhausted from his recent excursion as a dragon. As the two of them ran through more back alleys, Junnosuke shouted.
     "Put me down! Let me go home!"
     "Look kid, before, I was kidnapping you because I was being stupid. This time, I swear I'm kidnapping you for a good reason." Ramon sighed sharply. "Ay yi yi, that sounds stupid, doesn't it?"
     "Die already! Why didn't the police kill you?!"
     "Currently, you're under the effects of recent Twist usage, so your emotions are going to be harder to control than normal." Ramon zigzagged through a series of cramped alleys, before doubling back on himself and taking a different path entirely.
     "I want to go home! Take me home and die!"
     Ramon glared at the kid in his arms.
     "Then why didn't you go home?" Ramon snapped. "You just turned into a big dragon monster. Why didn't you pick up your stupid egg and go back to your house? It's not like I could've stopped you!"
     Junnosuke was quiet.
     He still hated Ramon, but the anger and hatred he was feeling cooled slightly as he recognized that the old man was right. He could've picked up his egg and moved it around. He knew that much from when he'd fooled around with the Skytree.
     Ramon kept running, with Junnosuke in his arms, for nearly an hour. After that, he set the kid down in an alley that was essentially a hidden courtyard from the nearby streets and took a moment to breathe. His eyes never left Junnosuke.
     "Kid, listen, you don't-"
     "My name is Junno-"
     "I know your stupid name; I'm not a complete idiot. I'm calling you kid because that's what you are. Plus, Japanese names are weird and yours is really long. I'm not gonna say 'Junnosuke' every time we talk; it gets annoying."
    Junnosuke looked away. He wanted to try and run away, but he was afraid Ramon would grab him and knock him unconscious again. After the adrenaline from his Twist had worn off, he remembered how terrified he was of Ramon.
     Ramon looked down at the kid and shook his head.
     "My job right now is to keep you safe; currently, that involves me hiding you from the police and the Japanese government."
     Junnosuke scoffed.
     "You kidnapped me."
     "I'll admit that the first time I kidnapped you, that was completely wrong. One hundred percent evil. If I had been smarter or wiser I never would've done that."
      Junnosuke looked caught off-guard by Ramon's bluntness, but he didn't stop glaring at him.
     "So you're evil." Junnosuke muttered. "Like, 'Diabolos.'"
     "Who?"
     "He's in my manga. You're evil, like him." Junnosuke cradled his legs closer and tightened the thin blanket around himself.
     Ramon rubbed his bald spot and closed his eyes.
     "I guess... yeah, I'm evil. That's why we were at the jail."
     "What do you mean?"
     "I was turning myself in. For kidnapping you." Ramon stated. "The only reason anything changed is because the police tried beating the heck out of me, and I wasn't sure that was part of due process. Don't look so excited about it kid; imagine if you were in my position."
     "I'm not in it though, so you getting beat up is good."
     "What if you were a criminal?"
     "I'm not."
     Ramon narrowed his eyes at Junnosuke, then sighed.
     "Stupid kid." He shook his head. "Get ready because I'm gonna carry you again. We're heading West as far as we can. I got a friend who'll pick us up and then, hopefully, you won't have to see me again."
     "I don't wanna go."
     "Do you wanna see your family again?"
     "You're evil."
     "So are the police. They were shooting you, remember? Do the good guys shoot each other? And what about your parents? The police could've taken you home, but they didn't! What does that tell you?"
     "You didn't take me home either."
     "That's not relevant to this discussion kid. We've already established that I'm evil. What matters is the fact that, if the police are good, they should have taken you home, right?"
     Junnosuke shifted away from Ramon. He didn't like what the old man was saying.
     "And if they were the good guys, they wouldn't have shot you, right?"
     Junnosuke's mind twirled with possibilities. He didn't like that what the old man was saying made sense.
     "Go away!" He snapped at Ramon.
     "I won't."
     "Why not?!"
     "Because I can't let you die."
     "I'm a Twister. You said your job was to kill me."
     Ramon could see that he wasn't making much progress.
     Junnosuke heard the sound of a revolver being loaded.
     "Get up kid. We're going West and we're not stopping until sundown."
     Junnosuke didn't bother turning around to check if Ramon was pointing his revolver at him. He knew the old man was evil, and so the threat wasn't empty. He stood up, wrapped the blanket around himself tightly, and let the old man pick him up.
     Ramon started running with Junnosuke in his arms again.
     He hadn't actually pulled out his revolver.
