Chapter 17:
Twist
Ramon ran behind a ramen restaurant. Junnosuke was quiet. The back alleys of Tokyo were cramped and annoying to crawl through, especially with him constantly lugging the kid around, but he bore it without many complaints. After two hours of scrambling through Tokyo's back streets, Junnosuke spoke up.
"Why don't I turn into a dragon and go home now?"
"Because that would involve you using your powers again."
"Why does that matter?"
"Using Twist is bad for you. It's like a drug; you'll get addicted to it."
Ramon skittered behind a hair salon with Junnosuke held tight.
"Rikka said you were wrong about me and my Twist."
"Who is... oh, your sister? Yeah she's wrong."
Junnosuke elbowed Ramon in the stomach.
"What was that for?!"
"For calling my sister stupid."
"I didn't say that!" Ramon replied as he took in a quick breath.
"You said she was wrong, and you call everyone who isn't you stupid if they disagree with you, so you think Rikka's stupid. She's not."
Ramon was impressed by how well the kid was reading him.
"Fine. I may have thought that about your sister and your parents. More than once."
The two of them crept across a series of bridges quickly, before returning to the back alleys.
"You have a really big ego."
"Excuse me?!" Ramon sputtered. "Kid, it's not ego if you know what you're talking about!"
"It's ego if you call everyone else stupid."
"No it's..."
Ramon walked them through a parking lot, and came to a stop behind a bunch of closely packed cars.
"Huh." He furrowed his brow. "Dang it."
Junnosuke looked up at Ramon, confused.
"I guess you're right. I really shouldn't call you stupid. It's not the right word. You'd be stupid if you actually knew what Twist did and denied the facts. I'm guessing nobody in your family has done serious research into Twist or its side effects?"
"Rikka has."
Ramon blinked a few times.
"And she still believes that I'm wrong?"
Junnosuke nodded enthusiastically.
"Well, you're sister's stupid. The rest of you are just ignorant." He started running with Junnosuke in his arms again as they left the parking lot.
"No she's not!" Junnosuke thrashed in Ramon's arms again, but he still wasn't strong enough.
"Do you know what Twist is?"
"Yeah! It lets me turn into a dragon!"
"That's what it does, not what it is. Did your sister ever tell you what Twist is?"
Junnosuke appeared thoughtful, then shook his head.
They ran across a series of train tracks before running back into the alleys.
"Then since we've got a long way to go, I'll give you some real facts about Twist." Ramon stated. "First of all, Twist is a force, like gravity, that can be manipulated by detected and manipulated by certain materials. Silver and vanadium come to-"
"Can I really not just turn into a dragon and go home? It wouldn't take very long." Junnosuke whined.
"No, it's not worth using your Twist powers even for a little bit."
"But it'll only take a few minutes!"
"Like I said earlier, using Twist is like taking an addictive drug; the more you use it, the more you'll want to."
"I'm not a baby."
"People older than you have lost their minds to Twist." Ramon said soberly. "It's not worth the temptation."
They passed through another parking lot, before jumping behind a pharmacy and taking a seat. Junnosuke considered what the old man was saying.
"You're lying to me. You kidnapped me and you're probably going to kill me."
Ramon looked at the kid with narrowed eyes.
"If you use your Twister powers, I will pull out my revolver and shoot you to death."
Junnosuke's blood ran cold.
"My bullets are silver; they'll ignore any fancy Twist powers you try to use on them. I also have purified salt on me, so if you get too close with your powers active I'll throw it your eyes and burn them out.
"Of course, if the real you is inside the egg, then it won't be too hard for me to shoot the egg and put an end to you that way. So when I say, 'don't use your Twist powers,' that means you don't use them. Understand?"
Junnosuke swallowed nervously. Ramon stood and picked him up, then started running again. Their path took them past a large dental clinic and a few hair salons, but they didn't run into any police officers. Eventually, after they crossed beneath a highway, Ramon spoke.
"As I was saying, Twist is a force that can be manipulated. You were born with a mutation on your brain stem that allows you to control Twist in a certain way. That's why it's called 'Twist;' your brain stem looks twisted, and it allows you to manipulate a force that can alter reality. It's like you're 'Twisting' reality into your own image."
Junnosuke sullenly looked out across the back alleys of Tokyo.
"The reason using your powers is bad is because it causes your brain stem to overexert itself. In some cases, people go completely feral because their brain stem ends up electrocuting parts of their brain over time. In a others, people drop dead because their basic functions, which are controlled by the brain stem, stop being taken care of."
"You're lying." Junnosuke mumbled. "I've been using Twist for a while with Rikka's help, and I've been totally fine. You just don't want me to escape. You're trying to scare me."
Ramon and the kid went through an alley behind a pawn shop.
He felt like abandoning Junnosuke. He could leave the kid in the pawn shop and run away. Let the police find him and do whatever they wanted. It would certainly be easier than putting up with the brat for any longer.
"I already told you, I can't let you die. I don't want to kill you. I don't even want to remove your Twist anymore. I want to get you away from the Japanese government until they promise to leave you alone and not take advantage of your powers."
Junnosuke was taken aback by how tired Ramon sounded.
"Once we get you to my friend Percy, he'll explain everything very nicely, and it'll all make sense. He's the smart one. I'm only good for killing monsters."
Junnosuke swallowed nervously.
"Monsters like me?"
The two of them ran behind a small restaurant.
"Only if you let your Twist take control of you."
~~~
The Japanese media had already come up with an explanation for how the dragon could exist without its Twister, and said that it must have been the 'death throes' of the young boy's body. The Arai family was doubtful, but every inquiry they made to the police was shut down.
The police were scanning Tokyo as efficiently as they could, but they weren't fast enough, and Ramon had left enough false trails for them to follow that their force was spread thin in every cardinal direction instead of solely focusing on the western part of the city. The fact that Ramon never stopped for more than a minute or two also made things more difficult for the police to track down the supposed child murderer.
In order to find Ramon more efficiently, the Japanese government ordered that one of their own Twisters be sent to aid the investigation after four hours had passed.
The policemen didn't like her, but they were in no position to refuse.
She was brought to the police station Ramon had escaped in a large white van. The back doors opened to reveal a tall, thin girl with short cut blond hair and wild, swirling blue eyes. She would've been considered rather attractive if it weren't for the way her eyes moved separate from each other like a chameleon's. Four men in specially made armor unchained her from the interior of the van, and when she stepped out onto the Tokyo street with her bare feet, she took in a deep breathe and immediately smiled widely.
A man in a white suit with blue gloves and sunglasses stepped out from the truck.
"Can I run?"
"One moment." The man in the white suit snapped his fingers. The lead police officer at the station rushed forward and placed Ramon's mugshot in the suited man's hand. "Find this man. You will receive a double portion of yakisoba as a reward."
"Wow!" She exclaimed. "I'll find him! Take off the chains and I'll find him!" She began tugging at the silver chains that were being held by the armored men.
"If you are seen by any citizens, you will not receive your reward. Your job is simply to locate this man and follow him without being spotted by anyone. Do you understand?"
"Yes sir!" She nodded.
He gestured at the men holding her chains.
The moment her chains hit the ground, she ran off sprinting like a bolt of wild lightning.
