Chapter 13:

Rising Stakes

Draconic Verse

The Chief had heard quaking for the past while, he suspected its identity but was not entirely sure.

You know… I realize this is real cruel and unfair, but a small, evil part of me is so happy to be proven right in spite of those snob’s bluster.

His face did not show this dilemma, but it was something he was thinking off and on about since he entered his cell. He had nothing better to do to pass the time after all.

I guess them’s the breaks right? Gettin’ arrested ain’t exactly supposed to be entertaining.

He looked to his left and his right, only one officer was stationed nearby at this point and he was looking quite nervous.

I shoulda trained these fellas better, policy dictates in a dangerous life threatening scenario, they’re supposed to be escorting all criminals off the premises for their own safety. I suppose we never drilled that one hard enough?

These absentminded thoughts were cut off, as a group of officers entered the cell block, and after heated negotiations ended, immediately made a bee line for the Chief’s cell.

“Sir, we’re here to get you out.”

“For what? To where? Why so?”

The question was obviously a bit aggravating, but the officers did not seem to mind. They simply opened the cell door, walked to the chief, undid his cuffs, and saluted.

“Sir, the streets are in chaos, seeing as you were already preparing for the Dragon, you must have some sort of plan to deal with this!”

Do they think I’m a miracle cure-all or something?”

“And what is ‘this’ supposed to be?”

The Chiefs demeanor changed, he seemed different than what his officers had expected of him. Annoyance or worry were normal reactions. Discipline or exasperation could be understood as well.

After all the bureaucratic hullabaloo, this is gonna be real entertainin’.

The Chief just seemed to be quite pleased, prompting his officers to question whether it was a good idea to release him.
