Chapter 20:
The Otaku Mage
“You were right, she does have a lovely voice and can sing very well! I was a bit skeptical at first, but besides her being a purple-haired cat girl, she’s just as enjoyable as other… real human artists.”, Hinako said from the couch.
“Told you! Also, she is very funny and has good taste in games as well! She has the right amount of lewdness and mischievousness to her, that I really enjoy and her character design is peak too!”, Kuro answered from the kitchen.
He was currently cooking lunch. On the TV ran a recording of a live concert of Kuro’s favorite Vtuber. Since no mission had come in yet, they were still on standby and Kuro decided to have a slow start in the day and wait until after lunch with training. Hinako was a bit miffed about that at first and complained but then complied. She was now sitting on the couch and reading some of Kuro’s manga books. She had started to show interest in them a few days back and took one of the shelves every time they were home. Kuro had noticed that some of them were the spicier ones in his collection, but he refrained from saying anything. Hinako still wore the T-shirt and sweatpants with the countless women’s faces plastered across them, which Kuro had given her on the day she first came here. She used them always for sleeping and lazing around in the apartment. Hinako looked up from the book she was currently reading.
“You like your cat girls well endowed, huh?”, She said with a smirk to Kuro.
“No… well, it’s a bonus I guess, but I don’t have any preferences in size. I like them all, big and small.”, Kuro replied while stirring in a pot.
Hinako down at the two protrusions under her shirt.
“Ah, good to know…”, She mumbled.
“Huh? You said something?”, Kuro asked from the kitchen.
“No, nothing… I guess you’re more the Ass-Type, huh?”
This made Kuro turn his attention away from his pot and look at Hinako, who smiled cheekily at him over the couch back. He opened his mouth to reply but just in that moment, someone rang on the door.
“I’ll get it!”, Hinako exclaimed and jumped up from the couch.
Kuro went back to cooking. A few moments later he heard the front door open and a sudden chill went down his spine.
“What the hell are you wearing, girl?!”, A very familiar voice could be heard.
Kuro closed his eyes and breathed deeply, knowing what would happen and preparing himself mentally. The door to the big studio room opened and Yamada rushed in, Hinako walking behind her with a slightly worried look.
“Otaku!! What the hell are you making her wear? That’s hardly appropriate to wear for a young girl!”, Yamada started to reprimand Kuro.
“But it’s comfy!”, countered Hinako from behind.
“That’s not the issue! It’s… you shouldn’t wear something with these on them…”
“Why? It’s just a few drawn women’s, who seem to have fun with whatever they are doing.
“Just… argh… whatever…”
Yamada sighed and took a look around the room. She went to the couch and placed the backpack she was carrying against it. Yamada spotted the manga books lying on the couch table. With furious eyes she turned around.
“What is this?! You have your lewd manga books just lying in the open?! You have a young woman living with you, you perverted old Otaku!”, Yamada yelled and took a few steps with pointed fingers towards him.
“I… that’s not…”, Kuro stuttered meekly.
Hinako was always surprised at how much he changed whenever Yamada was around. She watched with a cheeky smile how Kuro was fidgeting around, trying to explain himself.
“Ah, I was reading those and haven’t put them back yet. My bad.”, Hinako casually said and went to pick them up.
“What? You read those?!”, Yamada exclaimed taken by surprise.
“Yeah, some of them have really good art and have quite the… interesting and appealing content…”
Yamada looked confused between them two. Kuro stayed silent and went back to stirring his pot.
“You… read this kind of books… here? Just like that? In front of him?!”, Yamada said shaking her head in disbelief.
“Yeah, of course! Kuro does too! He even recommended some for me. He has an… interesting taste.”, Hinako replied with a cheeky smile.
Yamada looked again between them two, her face getting red. Hinako wondered if it was from anger or something else. Kuro said nothing and seemed completely absorbed in his cooking.
“D-Do you… read them… together… as well?”, Yamada asked with shaky voice.
“Yeah, sometimes.”, Hinako answered, her smile growing mischievous.
Yamada looked stunned at Kuro, who still had his back turned and said nothing.
“D-Did you do… anything else… together too?”, She asked hesitantly.
“Anything else?”, Hinako inquired, feigning innocents.
“Other than reading…”
“Oh… hehe… We d-“
“No! We did nothing!”, Kuro interrupted unusually intense, which made Yamada jump a bit.
Hinako looked surprised at him. He still hadn’t turned around and was adding spices to the pot. Hinako clicked her tongue and put the books back on the shelf.
“So, what brings you here? Wanted to see Kuro so badly?”, She asked casually.
“What? No! Why would I come to see him? I came to bring you your new gear and I have a new mission for the both of you!”, Yamada replied, finding her usual self again.
“Couldn’t you have just given us a call then?”
“I was just in the area, so I thought, I’ll just come by…”
“Really? You sure you didn’t just want to check on Kuro?”
“Why would I do that? Why should I check on the Otaku?”
“Well now, that is a good question…”
Hinako met her glare with an innocent smile.
“Stop it, kid… What’s the mission?”, Kuro interjected.
Yamadas expression suddenly lightened up.
“Umm… I have the file somewhere in here.”, She said and began to rummage through the backpack. “Ah here it is.”
Yamada pulled a folder out and placed it on the couch table.
“Well, that’s all for me. I think I’ll be going now…”, She said and went towards the door.
“Don’t you want to at least stay for lunch?”, Hinako offered.
Yamada froze in place.
“I… don’t know… I don’t want to impose…”, She said hesitantly.
“Kuro is making curry! And he is a good cook!”, Hinako insited.
“Well, if you insist… Is that okay with you?”
“Yeah, sure… there is enough. Grab another plate out of the cupboard, kid.”, Kuro said without turning around.
Hinako went and put a third plate on the table. Kuro placed the large pot with curry on the table and then went to get the rice from the cooker.
“Would you be so kind and change into something a little less… distracting?”, Yamada asked Hinako, as they both sat down next to each other.
“Fine…”, Hinako replied with a sigh, stood up and pulled her shirt up.
“What the… Not here, kid!”
Yamada waved her hand in a panicked fashion and a small lightning shot from her fingers right into Kuro’s eyes.
“Ah, fuck! What was that for?”, he exclaimed and held his eyes.
“Don’t look!”, Yamada demanded.
“How should I! You blinded me!”
“Don’t be a baby. And you kid, get to it and get changed!”
Hinako had watched all that in confusion with her shirt still halfway up.
“He already saw me naked, so give the man a break…”, She said nonchalantly.
“Just get changed…”, Yamada repeated and gave her a glare.
Hinako just shrugged, continued to undress and changed into a pair of jeans and her ninja anime shirt. Yamada waved her hand again after Hinako had finished and Kuro’s eyesight was restored. He began to put the food on everyone’s plate without saying anything. Then he went and grabbed a jar with chili flakes.
“You still like it more spicy?”, Kuro asked Yamada.
She just nodded and sprinkled some flakes over the curry. Hinako watched it with interest but said nothing.
“Thanks for the meal!”, The two women said simultaneously after Kuro had sit down.
“Damn that’s good. Haven’t had your cooking in ages.”, Yamada said after the first bit and then began to really dig in.
“Thanks.”, Kuro replied and ate as well.
Hinako watched Yamada and noticed that her eyes were darting repeatedly in the same direction. She followed the gaze and saw the small metal box sitting on the shelf at the end of it. Hinako’s curiosity got raised but she held it down for now. They ate in silence, with only the TV playing in the background.
