Chapter 30:
My Romantic Comedy in the Heartbreak Society Is More Complicated Than I Expected — Especially Around Her
I used to believe the past would remain static, forever relegated to the rearview mirror of my life. I was wrong. On that day, the past stood directly in front of me... and called my name.
“Long time no see, Mayonaka Nozomi.”
My heart didn’t just skip a beat; it came to a full, agonizing stop. He knew. He recognized me. Perhaps the light I thought had been extinguished wasn't dead at all—it was merely obscured by the shifting mists of time.
“Kengo…?” My voice fractured, sounding small and brittle.
He offered a thin, enigmatic smile. “So, we finally cross paths again, Nozomi.”
The evening breeze swept through the park, lifting my hair—long, violet, and a world away from the girl I used to be. I was no longer the middle schooler who walked with her head down, tracing patterns in the dirt. Today, I stood before him without running.
“I didn't expect you to change this much,” he said. “You too, Kengo.”
He was taller. Steadier. More... illegible. His gaze was deep, like a calm sea that hid countless secrets beneath the surface.
“I told you, didn't I?” he asked. “I’d keep my promise. I followed you to Tokyo.”
We sat side-by-side. Physically close, yet separated by a strange, invisible canyon. I told him everything. Tokyo. The grueling auditions. The new identity—Charlotte Inoue. Each word emerged slowly, and with every passing second, the heart that had once withered away began to beat again.
“Kengo-kun… actually, there was something I wanted to talk to you about before you left back then…” “What is it? Just say it.”
I looked down, my fingers trembling in my lap. Now or never... “Actually… I—”
“ACTUALLY, WHAT IS IT? SPILL!” “KANON?!”
The atmosphere shattered. “Kengo-neechan! I can't believe you're two-timing me!” “Heh? Since when were we even a thing?!”
I suppressed a laugh, despite the frustration. “Eeh? Are you two dating?” Kanon immediately hooked her arm through his. “Of course! We’ve even slept together! And bathed together! That one time Kengo-nee accidentally touched—” “KANON, STOP!”
Another voice joined the fray, trembling with shock. “K-Kengo-kun… y-you bathed together…?” Kurumi. Her face was deathly pale. “KURUMI! It’s a misunderstanding!” “See, Kurumi~ we’re getting closer while you’re drifting away, bleeeh~”
I held my forehead. Why is it that my life has devolved into such a bargain-bin drama...
The day ended without a resolution. That night, a notification lit up my screen.
Do you have some free time tomorrow? My heart hammered against my ribs. Yes. Why? Let’s meet at the theme park. I have something important to say. Just the two of us.
Just... the two of us.
The next day, I waited. When he arrived, heads turned. He was dressed simply, yet he possessed a natural magnetism. Today, I wasn't the "Idol" Charlotte. I was just Nozomi.
“Sorry for making you wait.” “N-no. I just got here myself.”
We walked together, the crowds watching us like we were a couple. It felt surreal. We bought cotton candy; he handed me one. We had burgers with extra sauce, just like the old days. Eventually, we settled by the edge of the lake.
“It’s beautiful, isn't it?” he remarked. The silence stretched between us. “What was it you wanted to say?”
He stared at the water. “I might be incredibly late.” My pulse quickened. “I’ve wanted to say this for a long time.” Silence. “Kengo… I’ve loved you for so long.”
The world stopped. No sound. No wind. Only the words, arriving late like rain after a decade of drought. He pulled me into an embrace. “Thank you for being the light in my life.”
My body went stiff. My mind was a whirlwind of static. “Why only now?” “Because I was a coward back then.”
I took a shaky breath. “I’ve been waiting for someone…” “And he’s already here.”
He smiled, a sad, knowing expression. “It’s Kurumi, isn't it?” I remained silent, and my silence answered everything. His eyes shimmered. “Maybe destiny only ever intended for us to be friends. But I still believe in second chances.”
I shook my head slowly. “Not every failure can be repeated until it's right.” He brushed a stray lock of hair from my cheek. “It’s okay to make mistakes. It’s not okay to repeat the same one.”
The wind picked up, and I realized then: some feelings are created simply to be late.
A few days later. Campus. The Heartbreak Society. Charlotte Inoue—Mayonaka Nozomi—had officially joined.
“I want to help those who have lost something,” I declared. “Because I’ve been there too.” The room broke into cheers. But there was one empty chair. Kurumi was absent.
Meanwhile, at Kurumi’s house: “Mom, Dad… welcome home.” “Kurumi. Are you ready?” “I’m ready.”
Her gaze had shifted, losing its usual softness. And for the first time, I realized something vital. A second chance wasn't just Nozomi’s to claim. It belonged to Kurumi, too.
And perhaps... I won't be able to run from this choice any longer.
