Chapter 3:
Seven lost keijus
Chapter 4: The First Trial – Flames and Water
The board updated. Match 2: SHINE (Fire Clan) vs. KIKURI (Poppet Clan)
Shine stepped into the arena. Her red hair blazed in the sunlight. She looked nervous—but her eyes were steady.
Kikuri walked in slowly. Elegant. Deadly. A beautiful doll was strapped to her back, and two smaller dolls hung from her belt. Her eyes were cold, calculating.
"A Fire Clan girl?" Kikuri smirked. "How… predictable. All fire, no finesse. You'll burn out quickly."
Shine said nothing. Just took her position.
At the high table, the Poppet Clan leader—Tsumi, a woman with sharp features and dolls woven into her hair—leaned forward with a confident smile.
"Watch closely. You'll see the true power of the Poppet Clan. We don't just control dolls—we control chi itself."
Enyo snorted. "Tsumi, do you really think a Poppet Clan chi wielder stands a chance against the raw power of the Fire Clan?"
"Raw power means nothing against precision, Enyo. A flame that can't reach its target is just light."
"We'll see."
Kusicame cut through calmly. "Enough. We are Umbras. We work together. No clan is better than any other. Watch the match and learn."
The leaders nodded respectfully. Danchi's eyes remained fixed on where Shizuke had disappeared, his expression dark.
The Sound Clan leader, Dorgon, a massive man with a deep voice, spoke up. "That boy Shizuke… his skill is truly remarkable. To read so many attacks without breaking form…"
Kusicame nodded. "Indeed. He has potential."
Danchi's jaw tightened. He said nothing.
---
"BEGIN!"
Kikuri moved instantly. Her hands flashed through intricate gestures—and suddenly the air itself seemed to shift.
"CHI WEAVE: SUPPRESSION!"
Shine gasped. Her body locked up. Her flames—usually so eager to burn—felt like they were drowning.
"What… what is this?!"
Kikuri smiled. Her main doll glowed with an eerie light.
"The Poppet Clan doesn't just control dolls, little flame. We control chi flow. Every living thing runs on chi—and chi answers to me."
She flicked her wrist. Shine's arm jerked violently against her will.
"Your fire feeds on your chi. And your chi… is mine."
The crowd gasped.
Isami watched with wide eyes. "She can't move! She's completely locked up!"
Hakimaru was tense. "Chi suppression. The Poppet Clan's most feared ability. They're cutting off her access to her own energy."
Yin listened. "Her heartbeat… it's not just fear. It's confusion. She's never felt anything like this."
"If she doesn't break free soon," Kimara said, "Kikuri will control her completely."
---
Kikuri didn't wait. Her hands danced through more gestures.
"PUPPET DANCE: TWIN STRIKE!"
The two smaller dolls leaped from her belt—animated by invisible chi threads. They raced across the ground toward Shine.
Shine tried to dodge, but her body was sluggish. The suppression was too strong.
The first doll slammed into her leg. Pain exploded up her thigh. The second doll spun through the air, aiming for her head.
"NO!"
She threw herself sideways. The doll grazed her cheek, drawing blood.
Kikuri laughed. "Pathetic! You can't even see them coming!"
The dolls attacked again and again. Shine rolled, dodged, scrambled—but she was slowing down.
---
Shine stumbled. Fell to one knee. Blood dripped from her lip.
The dolls hovered before her, ready to strike.
Kikuri walked closer, confident. "Give up, little flame. You can't win. Your chi is mine. Your body is mine. Everything you are… is mine."
Shine looked up at her. Eyes burning.
"No."
"What?"
Louder: "I said NO!"
She pushed against the suppression with everything she had. A single spark flickered at her fingertips.
Kikuri's eyes widened. "Impossible! My suppression—"
"Your suppression is just chi. And chi… can BURN!"
The spark exploded. The suppression shattered like glass.
"WHAT?!"
Shine rose. Flames erupted from her entire body—not wild, but focused. Controlled. Furious.
Flashback—minutes ago. Shizuke's cold voice: "Focus on your own fight."
Years ago. Training ground. Older Fire Clan fighters mocking her: "Too shy to fight? Too scared to burn? Pathetic!"
Her younger self, crying, her flames barely flickering.
Then—a hand on her shoulder. A warm voice she couldn't quite remember: "Fire isn't about being loud. It's about deciding to burn. When you decide… nothing can stop you."
I decide. I decide. I DECIDE.
"FLAME RELEASE!"
A massive wave of fire exploded outward—engulfing the dolls. They shattered instantly.
Kikuri screamed, throwing up her arms to protect herself. "NO! MY DOLLS!"
Shine charged through the flames. Her fist pulled back, blazing white-hot.
Kikuri panicked. "CHI WEAVE: AMPLIFICATION!"
She amplified her own chi desperately. The main doll on her back glowed blindingly. A barrier formed around her.
"You can't break this! It's my strongest defense!"
"We'll see!"
Shine punched the barrier.
The impact shook the entire arena. Fire and chi energy exploded in all directions. The crowd shielded their eyes.
When the light cleared, Shine's fist was pressed against the barrier. It was cracking.
Kikuri's face twisted with effort. Sweat poured down her face. Her main doll was smoking, dying.
"You'll… you'll burn out… before I do…"
"Maybe."
Shine pulled her fist back.
"But I decided to win."
She punched again—and the barrier shattered.
Kikuri flew backward, rolling, tumbling, stopping inches from the edge. Her main doll fell from her back. Broken. Dead.
Kikuri lay there, gasping, defeated.
---
Shine walked toward her. Slowly. Flames dying down. Breathing hard.
She stood over Kikuri. Offered her hand.
"You're strong. Really strong. That chi manipulation… I've never felt anything like it."
Kikuri stared at her, stunned.
"But I meant what I said. I don't want to hurt you."
Kikuri's cold eyes wavered. For a moment—just a moment—something human flickered there.
Then she slapped Shine's hand away. "I don't need your pity, Fire girl."
She turned. Walked toward the edge of the arena. Stopped at the line.
Without turning, she said, "…But I won't forget this."
She stepped over. Surrendered.
The Paragon announced, "Match concluded… Winner: Shine of the Fire Clan!"
The crowd erupted.
Shine stood in the arena, trembling. Tears streamed down her face. She won.
Her eyes found the crowd. Found a spot against a wall.
Shizuke. Watching.
For just a moment, their eyes met. Shizuke's expression didn't change. But he gave the smallest nod. Barely visible.
Shine's face flushed. She smiled—shy again, but warm.
…He watched.
Kikuri sat outside the arena, staring at her broken dolls. Her hands shook.
She broke through everything. Suppression. Amplification. The barrier. No one's ever done that.
She looked at Shine, surrounded by cheering Fire Clan members.
…Interesting.
---
Match 3 appeared on the board: KIMARA (Water Clan) vs. JIN (Speed Clan)
Kimara walked to the arena. Her face was stone. But her eyes were storming.
Jin bounded in—lean, wiry, with silver-streaked hair and a perpetual grin. He moved like he couldn't stand still, bouncing on his toes.
"Water Clan! Awesome! I've always wanted to fight someone who can't keep up with me!"
Kimara said nothing. Took her position.
"BEGIN!"
Jin vanished. "VELOCITY BURST!"
Not figuratively—literally gone. One moment he was there, the next nothing but a blur.
The crowd gasped.
Kimara's eyes scanned. …Fast.
Jin appeared behind her. "FASTER!"
He kicked—but Kimara's water reacted instantly. An aqua shield blocked the kick, but she slid forward.
Jin appeared on her other side. "TOO FAST!"
Another kick. Another shield. Another push.
He was everywhere. Left. Right. Above. Below. The arena filled with afterimages.
"MOMENTUM SHIFT!"
He changed direction mid-air—impossible for normal fighters—and attacked from three angles in rapid succession. Slam. Slam. Slam.
Kimara's shields held, but cracks appeared. She was being overwhelmed.
Jin laughed. "You Water types are all the same! Good defense, but too slow to hit back!"
"You talk too much."
Jin appeared directly in front of her. "AND YOU LOSE!"
He threw a punch—faster than any before—aimed directly at her face.
Kimara moved. Just slightly. The punch grazed her cheek, drawing blood.
But her hand was already moving. "WATER WHIP!"
A tendril of water lashed out and wrapped around Jin's ankle.
"WHAT—?!"
He tried to phase, but water didn't care about speed. It was already there. Already holding.
"Speed means nothing if you can't escape."
She yanked. Jin flew toward her—off-balance, flailing.
But Jin grinned mid-air. He twisted. "RICOSHET STEP!"
He kicked off a water droplet in the air, redirected his trajectory, and launched a kick directly at her head.
Kimara blocked with her arm. The impact cracked through the arena.
They were locked together. Water swirling. Speed straining.
Jin grinned through gritted teeth. "Not bad, Water girl! But I'm not done yet!"
Kimara's voice was quiet, dangerous. "Neither am I."
Her eyes flicked toward the high table. Toward the Water Clan leader, Iara. Something burned there. Old pain. Old anger.
"I won't lose. Not here. Not to you. Not to ANYONE."
"TIDAL SURGE!"
Her water exploded outward—a massive wave that filled the entire arena.
Jin's eyes widened. He tried to run, but water was everywhere.
"VELOCITY BURST! MAXIMUM!"
He zoomed across the surface, but the wave was faster. It crashed over him.
"WATER PRISON!"
The wave contracted, trapping Jin in a swirling sphere of water. He spun, choked, struggled—but couldn't break free.
Inside the sphere, Jin fought for air. His speed was useless—no traction, no surface.
No… no… I won't… I WON'T!
"INERTIA BREAK!"
He forced his body to stop completely—ignoring all momentum—and for one split second, he was perfectly still in the water.
Then he pushed off the water itself. Ricochet Step. He bounced off the inner wall of the prison, shooting toward the opposite side, building speed inside the sphere.
Kimara's eyes widened.
"VELOCITY BURST: MAXIMUM!"
Jin exploded through the water prison, shattering it from inside. Water exploded everywhere. He landed on the arena edge, gasping, soaked, but free.
---
They stared at each other across the destroyed arena. Both breathing hard. Both bleeding. Both refusing to fall.
Jin grinned through exhaustion. "That… was… AWESOME!"
Kimara's voice was cold, but with a thread of respect. "You're the first Speed Clan fighter to break my prison."
"First time for everything! Now let's finish this!"
He charged—one last attack. All his remaining speed. A blur of motion.
Kimara raised her hand. The water on the ground—from the shattered prison—rose.
"FLASH FREEZE."
The water instantly turned to ice. Jin's feet were caught.
He stumbled, fell, slid toward the edge. "NO NO NO—"
He reached out, grabbed the edge, hanging on by his fingertips.
Kimara walked toward him. Slowly. Deliberately.
She looked down. "You're fast. Creative. Strong."
"Thanks… can I… get up now…?"
Kimara's lip twitched. Almost a smile.
"No."
She tapped his fingers with her foot.
He fell. Outside the line.
The Paragon announced, "Match concluded! Winner: Kimara of the Water Clan!"
The crowd cheered. Jin lay in the dirt, laughing despite himself.
"She… she tapped my fingers… like I was… a bug… I LOVE it!"
Kimara walked to the edge. Looked down. "You're strong. Work on your footing."
Jin shouted up at her, "NEXT TIME I WON'T SLIP! AND I'LL WIN!"
She didn't respond. But her shoulders relaxed—just slightly. She walked away.
---
Match 4 appeared: HAKIMARU (Fire Clan) vs. KAZAN (Fire Clan)
The crowd murmured. Two Fire Clan fighters? This would be explosive.
Hakimaru walked to the arena. Calm. Focused.
Kazan bounced in—tall, lean, with wild flame-patterned hair and a massive grin. "YES! Another Fire Clan! Finally a REAL fight!"
"Don't disappoint me."
"Oh, I won't! I PROMISE you won't forget this!"
"BEGIN!"
Both fighters exploded with flames simultaneously. The arena became an inferno. The crowd felt the heat from fifty meters away.
"FLAME BURST!"
A massive fireball rocketed toward Hakimaru.
"FLAME CLOAK!"
He didn't dodge—he absorbed it. The fire rolled off him like water.
Kazan grinned. "YES! That's what I'm talking about!"
He charged toward Hakimaru. Their flames clashed. The shockwave shook the stands.
They exchanged blow after blow. Punch for punch. Flame for flame.
Kazan threw a "BLAZING FIST!" Hakimaru answered with "MAGMA BLOCK!"
"INFERNO KICK!" — "ASH STEP!" (dodge)
"FLAME LANCE!" — "FIRE WALL!"
The crowd was screaming. This was the best match yet.
Isami watched with wide eyes. "They're… they're both on fire! Literally! How are they not burning?!"
Kimara watched intently. "Fire Clan members are immune to their own flames. But each other's? That's different. They're burning each other."
Yin added, "Kazan's flames are wild. Untamed. Hakimaru's are controlled. Precise. Like two different philosophies of fire."
Kazan landed a massive punch to Hakimaru's chest. Hakimaru slid backward, feet digging trenches.
Kazan panted, grinning. "GOT YOU!"
Hakimaru looked down. His clothes were singed. His skin was red, blistered. But he was still standing.
"…Good hit."
Kazan blinked. "Huh?"
"But you left yourself open. Again."
"Again? What do you mean 'again'—?"
"FLAME MOVEMENT!"
Hakimaru vanished—reappearing directly behind Kazan.
Kazan's eyes went wide. "WHAT—?!"
"You drop your right shoulder after every power strike. Every. Single. Time. Your flames flare wide when you're excited. You telegraph every attack."
"That's not—I don't—"
"VOLCANO UPPERCUT!"
A massive pillar of flame erupted from his fist, catching Kazan square in the jaw.
Kazan flew into the air—spinning, flailing—flames trailing behind him like a comet.
He crashed down… outside the arena.
Silence. Then explosive cheers.
But Kazan wasn't moving.
Hakimaru walked to the edge. Looked down.
Kazan's voice was weak. "…That… that hurt…"
"Stay down. You lost."
Kazan's eyes snapped open. "Lost… yeah. But down? NEVER."
He tried to stand. Fell. Tried again. Fell.
He finally made it to his knees. Grinning through the pain, the blood, the burns.
"HAHAHA! That… that was AMAZING! You… you completely destroyed me! But I GOT BACK UP!"
Hakimaru said quietly, "…You did."
Kazan looked up at him. "Next time? I'LL win. I'll learn your patterns. I'll fix my stance. I'll control my flames. And I'LL WIN."
Hakimaru looked at him for a long moment. Something shifted in his stoic expression.
"…I hope you do."
He turned and walked away.
Kazan laughed weakly behind him. "HEY! WHAT'S YOUR NAME?!"
Hakimaru paused. Didn't turn. "Hakimaru."
"HAKIMARU! REMEMBER IT! BECAUSE I'M COMING FOR YOU!"
Hakimaru's lip twitched. He kept walking.
The Paragon announced, "Match concluded! Winner: Hakimaru of the Fire Clan!"
---
The sun began to set. The arena grounds were bathed in golden light.
Isami looked at the board. His name was still there. Match 5. Still pending.
"Wait… my match… it's still up there."
Kimara glanced at the sky. "The sun is setting. They won't start another match today."
"So… I don't fight today?"
"Looks like it."
Isami processed this. "I don't fight today. I get to live another day. I get to go to sleep and wake up and THEN fight."
"That's correct."
"THAT'S WORSE! NOW I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT ALL NIGHT! I CAN'T SLEEP WHEN I'M WORRIED! I'M GOING TO BE TIRED AND HUNGRY AND SCARED AND THEN FIGHT TOMORROW!"
Yin said gently, "Or… you could rest, eat well, and be stronger tomorrow."
Isami paused. "…That's also an option."
Hakimaru smirked. "Panicking is also an option. Your choice."
Isami groaned.
The Paragon stepped forward as the sun touched the horizon. "Attention, all aspirants! The first day of the Umbra Academy Selection is now complete. Over 1,500 participants have begun their journey. Due to the number of matches, the selection will continue over multiple days."
She gestured toward distant hills where rows of tents and buildings had been set up.
"Shelters have been prepared for all aspirants here in the arena grounds. You will eat here. Sleep here. Live here until the selection is complete. Remaining matches for today are postponed until tomorrow morning. Rest well. Prepare. The battles continue at dawn."
The crowd murmured, dispersing slowly.
Isami let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. I get one more night.
"Don't waste it," Kimara said.
---
Evening fell over the massive camp. Thousands of aspirants milled about—eating, training, talking, laughing. Fires flickered to life across the valley.
The main four sat together near a fire. Isami had an ice pack on his face from earlier training. Kimara stared into the flames, silent. Hakimaru sat with arms crossed. Yin listened to the night.
Isami looked around at the sea of people. Fire Clan trainees practicing flames. Water Clan members meditating by a small stream. Sound Clan kids sending shockwaves into the night sky. Vision Clan members watching in silence. Poppet Clan members repairing their dolls. Speed Clan members zipping between fires. Figure Clan trainees arm-wrestling.
"So many people… all here for the same thing."
"To prove themselves," Kimara said.
"Yeah. To prove themselves."
He looked at his friends. "Thanks for today. For being here."
Kimara glanced at him. "…Don't get soft."
"Too late."
Yin smiled. Hakimaru snorted.
They sat together in the firelight.
---
Nearby, a boy sat alone. Head down. Shoulders slumped. His food sat uneaten beside him.
Around him, a group of Figure Clan trainees stood, laughing.
"Hey Ryosuke! Your brother's a Paragon! One of the seven strongest in the entire clan!"
"And look at you! Couldn't even last thirty seconds in your match!"
"The flop brother! The failure! The embarrassment of the Figure Clan!"
Ryosuke didn't respond. Didn't look up. But his fists clenched so tight his knuckles were white.
"Your brother's out there protecting the Yashiroyin, and you can't even protect yourself from a rookie!"
They laughed, kicking dirt toward him, then walked away. Ryosuke sat alone in the dust.
Isami watched from his fire. He started to stand. "Hey. Those guys—"
Kimara grabbed his arm. "Sit down."
"But they're bullying him!"
"And what will you do? Fight all of them? You haven't even had your first match yet."
"I can't just—I have to—"
Yin said calmly, "Isami. Look at him."
Isami looked. Ryosuke hadn't moved. But his hands were clenched. His jaw was tight. His eyes—when he finally looked up—weren't sad.
They were angry.
"He doesn't want pity," Yin said. "He wants to prove them wrong. Interfering now would only make it worse."
Isami sat slowly, frustrated. "…That's not fair. None of that is fair."
Hakimaru said quietly, "Fair doesn't exist. Only strength. And choices."
Isami looked at Ryosuke again. The boy sat alone in the fading light.
…I hope he's strong enough. To prove them wrong.
---
Ryosuke sat in the dirt. The laughter faded into the distance.
He looked up at the darkening sky. The first stars were appearing.
Brother… why did you have to be so great? Why do I have to be me? Why can't I be like you?
Tears threatened. He blinked them away angrily.
No. No crying. Not here. Not now. Not ever.
He stood. Brushed off his clothes. His eyes—tired, hurt, but with a flicker of something unbroken—scanned the camp.
He saw groups laughing. Families celebrating. Friends supporting each other.
He saw no one looking at him.
I'll show them. Someday. I'll show them all. My brother isn't the only one who can be great.
He walked toward his tent. Alone. Shoulders straight.
Still moving forward.
---
Far from the fires, away from everyone, Shizuke sat against a wall at the edge of the camp.
Alone. As always.
His purple eyes watched the stars.
Day one. One win. Four to go.
He thought about the day. Raigo's desperate attacks. The clan leader's cold stare. The word "traitor" hanging in the air.
And then… the girl. Shine. Approaching him. Speaking to him. Looking at him without fear.
…Strange. I think I have met her but can't just recall.
He didn't know what to do with that.
His hand moved to his chest. Touched something hidden under his shirt. A small cloth. Old. Worn. Faded.
His father's. The only thing he had left.
Father… wherever you are… I'm still here. Still fighting. Still alone.
I won't be called traitor. I won't be like you.
I'll prove them wrong. All of them.
He closed his eye.
The night surrounded him.
---
Across the camp, near a Fire Clan fire, Shine sat with her group. Her red hair glowed in the firelight. She was quiet, shy again, but her eyes kept drifting toward the edge of camp. Toward where she knew Shizuke sat alone.
She sighed heavily. She couldn't stop looking.
The camera pulled back. The camp stretched across the valley. Thousands of lights. Thousands of stories. Thousands of dreams.
Isami lay by his fire, staring at the stars, his hand clutching his pendant.
Tomorrow… tomorrow I fight.
He closed his eyes.
