Chapter 4:

The Weight of Dreams

Seven lost keijus

Chapter 5: The Weight of Dreams

Dawn broke slowly over the Umbra Academy selection grounds.

Mist rolled across the valley like a living thing, drifting between thousands of tents spread across the massive camp. Night fires had burned low, leaving only faint smoke rising into the pale morning sky.

The sound of metal clashing echoed in the distance.

Some aspirants were already training. Some were praying. Some sat in silence, staring at the arena walls like prisoners waiting for judgment.

Today… the second day of the selection began.

---

Inside One of the Tents

Isami lay awake, staring up at the canvas roof.

His eyes were open. He hadn't slept. His hand gripped the pendant around his neck so tightly his knuckles were white.

Today… I fight.

He exhaled slowly, then sat up.

Across the tent, Kimara sat cross‑legged, eyes closed, hands resting on her knees. Water floated around her arms in slow, perfect circles, moving like it was breathing with her. Every drop moved with control. With calm. With power.

Nearby, Hakimaru did push‑ups – one arm, on his fists. Back straight, breathing steady, sweat dripping but his face completely focused.

Yin sat near the entrance. Still. Peaceful. Her blind eyes closed, head slightly tilted as if listening to something far away. The wind. The camp. The heartbeat of the world.

Isami watched them.

They all look so ready…

He swung his legs out of his bedroll – and his foot caught the cloth. He tripped. Hard. Face first into the ground.

THUD.

Kimara didn't open her eyes. “Smooth.”

“...Shut up,” Isami mumbled into the dirt.

Hakimaru didn't stop training. “If you fall like that in the arena, you're dead.”

“I KNOW.”

Yin smiled softly. “Your heartbeat is loud this morning, Isami.”

“Yeah… well… today's the day I get destroyed, so that makes sense.”

Kimara opened one eye. “Don't die.”

“Very encouraging.”

“Don't embarrass us either.”

“Wow. Even better.”

Yin said gently, “Fight your fight, Isami.”

He looked at her, then nodded slowly. “Yeah.”

He grabbed his pendant again. My fight.

---

The Selection Grounds – Morning

The arena valley was alive. Thousands of aspirants filled the stands. Clan banners waved in the wind – red and gold for Fire Clan, blue and silver for Water Clan, grey and white for Sound Clan, black and gold for Figure Clan, pale violet for Vision Clan, deep purple for Poppet Clan, silver and white for Speed Clan.

At the top of the arena sat the high table, a massive stone platform overlooking everything. At the center, Kusicame sat on the royal seat. Young, early thirties, calm – but his eyes saw everything.

Behind him stood the seven Paragons, the strongest warriors of the Umbra core. Each one radiated power without moving. Beside them sat the six clan leaders. One seat remained empty – the Speed Clan, still missing.

The crowd murmured.

A Paragon stepped forward. Elegant, graceful, her voice soft but carrying across the entire valley without effort. Her warm eyes glowed faintly with controlled chi. This was Saki, Kusicame's personal assistant.

“Day two of the Umbra Academy Selection now begins.”

The crowd quieted instantly.

“Remaining matches from yesterday will now continue. Remember the rules.”

She raised her hand. Symbols appeared in the air above the arena.

“Arena battle rules: fight until opponent is knocked out or forced outside the arena line. Killing is forbidden. Loss of control results in disqualification.”

She looked across the arena. “First match of the day.”

The board lit up.

MATCH 5 – ISAMI (Unaffiliated) vs. GORO (Figure Clan)

The crowd reacted immediately.

“That's the chi‑less kid.”

“He survived yesterday?!”

“He's fighting Goro? He's dead.”

Back at the tent entrance, Isami froze. “…That's me.”

Kimara stood. “Took long enough.”

Hakimaru cracked his neck. “Figure Clan. Bad matchup.”

Yin tilted her head. “Your heartbeat just got louder.”

“I noticed.”

Isami started walking toward the arena – slow at first, then steady.

Kimara watched him go. “…Don't lose in one hit.”

He called over his shoulder, “I'll try to make it two.”

Hakimaru smirked slightly. Yin smiled.

---

Match 5: Isami vs. Goro

The arena was enormous – forty meters across. Stone walls rose high, a white boundary line carved into the dirt. Thousands watched. The morning sun cast long shadows across the battlefield.

Isami stepped inside. His heart pounded so loud he could hear it. He gripped his pendant.

Across the arena, Goro entered. Tall. Lean. Covered in shifting geometric tattoos. His eyes were sharp, calm, confident.

He stopped ten meters away and studied Isami.

“So… you're the one.”

“Yeah.”

“Kusicame's student.”

“Yeah.”

“No chi.”

“Nope.”

“No clan.”

“Still no.”

Goro tilted his head. “And yet… here you are.”

“…Yeah.”

Silence. Wind blew across the arena. Dust moved between them.

Saki raised her hand. “Match 5… BEGIN.”

Goro's eyes ignited. Isami's heart jumped.

---

Phase 1 – Stone Array

For a moment, nothing happened. The wind blew. Dust rolled. Isami stood in place, fists shaking slightly.

Goro didn't move. He just watched. Studying. Calculating.

“…You're nervous.”

“Yeah.”

“Good.”

His eyes flared. Golden and blue geometric symbols spun inside his pupils. The tattoos on his arms began to glow. Lines shifted. Shapes rotated. Reality bent.

“IMAGINATION MANIFESTATION – STONE ARRAY.”

He slammed his hand down. The ground exploded.

BOOM!

A pillar erupted under Isami's feet. He jumped back – BOOM! Another pillar shot up beside him. He stumbled – BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! Three more pillars burst out in a chain reaction, forcing him to run. The arena shook with every impact. Stone dust filled the air.

The crowd gasped.

“Five at once?!”

“That's not beginner level!”

Isami rolled behind a broken pillar, breathing hard. Okay… okay… don't panic…

Goro raised his hand again. “IMAGINATION MANIFESTATION – SHARD RAIN.”

Above Isami, stone spikes formed in the air. Dozens. Floating. Pointed down.

Oh no.

Goro snapped his fingers. They fell. Fast.

Isami dived to the side. CRACK! CRACK! CRACK! Spikes slammed into the ground around him. One sliced across his arm. Blood. He hissed in pain.

“Okay… that hurt.”

“You should stay down.”

“Not an option.”

Isami stood again. Still walking forward.

“Why are you coming closer?”

“Because you're over there.”

Goro paused, then smirked slightly. “Interesting.”

---

Phase 2 – Triple Bind

He formed a seal with his fingers. Symbols appeared on the ground.

“SEAL CRAFTING – TRIPLE BIND.”

Three glowing circles appeared under Isami. They snapped upward instantly, locking his legs, his waist, his chest. He froze in place, grunting, struggling. Nothing moved.

“Figure Clan seals adapt to their target. Against chi users, they resist. Against you… they don't even try.”

Goro walked closer slowly. “Why are you talking?”

“Because I want to understand something.” He looked straight at Isami. “You have no chi. No clan. No skill. No power. Why are you here?”

“Because I want to be.”

“That's not enough.”

“It is for me.”

Goro stared at him. A long silence. Then – the seals disappeared.

“Come at me.”

Isami blinked. “…What?”

“Show me.” He stepped back. “Not your power.” He pointed at Isami's chest. “You.”

Isami breathed hard, then nodded. “Okay.”

---

Phase 3 – Seventeen Times

He ran. Punch. Wild. Desperate.

Goro tilted his head – miss. Then tapped Isami's ribs. THUD. Isami dropped to one knee, got up, ran again.

Kick – miss. Sweep – SLAM. Dust exploded.

The crowd counted: “ONE!”

Isami pushed up. Ran again. Goro sidestepped, elbow strike. Fall.

“TWO!”

He stood again. Blood on his lip. Breathing harder. Ran again. This time he circled. Watching.

“…You're learning?”

“Trying to.”

He lunged suddenly, grabbed Goro's arm. The crowd gasped – first contact. Isami swung. Goro twisted, flipped him.

SLAM.

“THREE!”

Isami stood again.

FOUR. FIVE. SIX.

Each time slower. Each time harder. His face swelling. His ribs bruised. His arm shaking. But he kept walking forward.

“Why?”

Isami spat blood. “Because I said I would.”

He charged again. Goro punched him in the stomach – hard. Isami folded. Fell.

“SEVEN!”

He stood again – barely.

“EIGHT!”

Again.

NINE. TEN. ELEVEN. TWELVE. THIRTEEN. FOURTEEN. FIFTEEN. SIXTEEN.

The arena grew quiet. Nobody cheering now. Just watching.

Goro frowned slightly. “You can't win.”

“I know.”

“Then stop.”

“No.”

He stepped forward again.

“Why.”

Silence. Isami laughed weakly.

“Because… I don't have anything else.”

He took another step.

“No clan.”

Step.

“No power.”

Step.

“No parents.”

He grabbed his pendant. Hand shaking.

“Just this.”

His voice cracked.

“Kusicame raised me.”

Step.

“My friends believe in me.”

Step.

“My parents died loving me – even if I don't know them.”

Step.

He stood right in front of Goro. Bleeding. Broken. Still standing.

“So hit me.”

Silence.

“I'll get up.”

Silence.

“I ALWAYS GET UP.”

The arena was completely quiet. Not one sound.

Goro stared at him. Five seconds. Ten. Fifteen.

His eyes changed – not cold anymore. Soft. Respectful.

“…I see.”

He raised his hand. Isami braced.

“IMAGINATION MANIFESTATION…”

Light spread across the ground. Flowers bloomed. Hundreds. Glowing. Beautiful. Around Isami.

“…Flowers.”

Goro stepped forward.

“You lost the fight.”

He gently pushed Isami. Isami stepped back, crossed the line, fell.

“…but you won something else.”

Silence. Then – the arena exploded with cheers. Louder than any match so far. People standing. Shouting. Crying.

Saki's voice was thick with emotion. “Winner… Goro of the Figure Clan.”

Goro offered his hand. Isami stared, then took it.

“You're the bravest fighter I've met.”

Isami smiled weakly. “You hit really hard.”

The crowd laughed and cheered.

---

Aftermath – Arena Side

The crowd still roared – not for the winner, but for Isami. People stood, clapped, shouted his name. Some aspirants wiped their eyes. Even warriors from the clans looked shaken.

Isami could barely stand. Goro held his arm to keep him from falling.

“You should rest.”

“Yeah… that sounds like a good idea…”

Suddenly, Kimara jumped down from the stands, water already forming around her hands.

“MOVE.”

She slid to Isami's side, kneeling beside him. Her hands shook as she brought the water to his face. The water glowed faintly, cleaning the blood and healing him.

“You idiot… you absolute idiot…” Her voice cracked. “Seventeen times.” She looked at him, eyes wet. “I counted.”

Isami smiled weakly. “You always count…”

“WHY DIDN'T YOU STAY DOWN?!”

“Because… then you'd beat me up later anyway…”

Kimara froze, then laughed through tears. “You're impossible…”

Hakimaru walked up slowly. Arms crossed. Face serious – but his eyes were wet.

“That was the stupidest thing I've ever seen.”

“Thanks.”

“…It was also the bravest.”

He offered his hand. Isami took it.

Yin knelt beside him quietly, touching his chest lightly. Listening.

“Your heartbeat…” She smiled. “It's calm.”

“Really?”

“Yes.” She tilted her head. “You're happy.”

Isami looked at the flowers still on the ground. “Yeah…” Maybe.

---

High Table Reaction

The clan leaders sat in silence. No one spoke for a moment.

Enyo, the Fire Clan leader, finally said, “That boy… has nothing.”

Iara, the Water Clan leader, added, “And yet the whole arena stood for him.”

Danchi, the Vision Clan leader, murmured, “…Rare.”

Tsumi, the Poppet Clan leader, nodded. “The boy has a strong will.”

Kensai, the Figure Clan leader, kept quiet.

All eyes moved to Kusicame. He sat calmly, but his hands gripped the armrest tightly. He smiled softly. “That's my student.”

One of the Paragons – Yotoro, the Figure Clan Paragon – looked down at the arena. “Interesting… very interesting.”

---

Match 6: Shiba vs. Akari

The giant board lit up again.

MATCH 6 – SHIBA (Unaffiliated) vs. AKARI (Vision Clan)

Shiba walked in first. Calm. Quiet. Simple clothes, a simple blade at his hip. No clan mark. No aura. Just stillness. He stepped into the arena like he belonged there.

Across from him, Akari entered. Her pale eyes already glowed, geometric light spinning inside them. The Vision Clan symbol on her shoulder. She smiled confidently.

“Another unaffiliated.” She studied him. “You carry a blade.”

“Yes.”

“Traditional.”

“Works.”

She smirked. “My eyes see the most probable outcome. Every move. Every strike. Every step. You cannot surprise me.”

Shiba slowly unsheathed his blade. Metal rang softly.

“Then I won't try to.”

Saki raised her hand. “BEGIN.”

Akari's eyes flared. Red patterns spun rapidly. Her vision split into multiple futures.

Left slash… step right… counter strike…

Shiba moved fast. She dodged easily.

“Too slow.”

He attacked again – spin slash. She stepped back.

“I see it.”

Again. Again. Again. Every move predicted.

The crowd murmured. “She's reading him completely. Vision Clan advantage.”

Akari smiled. “You're skilled. But skill doesn't beat sight.”

Shiba stopped moving. Completely still.

Akari frowned. “…Why did you stop?”

“Because you're watching the future.”

He kicked the dirt. Dust flew into the air.

Akari's eyes widened. Her visions split – too many possibilities, too many outcomes.

“Wait–”

Shiba moved. Flash. His blade passed her shoulder. Her sleeve tore. She jumped back.

“You broke my prediction?!”

“No.” He stepped forward slowly. “I made too many.”

The crowd gasped. “He overloaded her vision?! That's insane control…”

Akari focused harder, her eyes glowing brighter.

“Fine. Then I'll see faster.”

Her pupils spun faster. Shiba attacked again. She dodged – barely.

Again – closer. Again – her hair got cut. Again – her arm got scratched.

“He's getting faster!” she thought.

“No.” Another strike. “You're getting tired.”

He attacked again, again, again – relentless. Steel flashed everywhere.

Akari breathed harder. Sweat ran down her face. Her eyes flickered.

No… I see it… I SEE–

Her leg shook. She couldn't move in time.

Shiba stopped his blade one inch from her throat. Perfect control.

Silence.

“Match over.”

The arena erupted with cheers.

Akari stared at the blade – shaking, not scared, amazed.

“You… you beat my vision…”

“No.” He sheathed his blade. “I beat your limits.”

She smiled. “What's your name?”

“Shiba.”

“I'll remember that.”

He walked away calmly. The crowd parted for him. Respect. Real respect.

---

Match 7: Yin vs. Kagen

The board glowed again.

MATCH 7 – YIN (Sound Clan) vs. KAGEN (Fire Clan)

Yin walked forward calmly – barefoot, floating slightly above the ground. Her dark hair moved gently, as if wind was following her.

Kagen jumped into the arena energetically, fire sparking around his fists. He grinned wide.

“YES! Finally!” He saw Yin. “Whoa… you're blind?”

Yin smiled softly. “Yes.”

“That's awesome.” The crowd laughed. “I mean – not awesome awesome – I mean – this fight is gonna be awesome!”

Yin said gently, “You're very loud.”

“Fire Clan. We don't know how not to be.” He punched the air, flames bursting. “Let's go!”

Saki: “BEGIN.”

Kagen attacked instantly with a huge fireball. Yin tilted her head slightly, stepped left – the fireball exploded behind her.

“WHAT?!” Kagen threw another, and another. Flames filled the arena.

Yin moved with tiny steps, always in the perfect place. Never rushed. Never panicked.

“How are you doing that?!”

“I can hear you.”

“You can't hear fire!”

Yin smiled. “Fire is very loud.”

The crowd laughed. Kagen grinned. “Alright then!”

He jumped high, flames exploding under his feet. “FLAME METEOR!” He shot into the air like a rocket, then dived down like a comet.

Yin stood still – listening, listening. At the last second, she stepped aside. Kagen slammed into the ground. BOOM! The arena shook. Dust everywhere. For the first time, Yin slid back slightly.

“YES! I almost hit you!!”

Yin smiled. “Almost is loud.”

Kagen rushed again – a punch covered in fire. Yin raised one hand. “Sound Pulse.” An invisible wave exploded outward, pushing Kagen back hard.

“Whoa!! That was awesome!!”

He ran again – faster, more flames. “FLAME RUSH!”

Yin raised both hands. Air vibrated. “Sound Barrier.” A transparent wall appeared. Kagen punched it – cracks. Punched again – more cracks.

“BREAK!”

“You're very strong.”

“THANK YOU!”

He punched again. The barrier shattered. But Yin had already moved – she appeared behind him.

“Sound Slash.”

An invisible blade cut the air. Kagen jumped too slow – it grazed his shoulder. A small cut.

He looked at the blood, then smiled wider. “YES!! This is the best fight today!”

Kagen breathed hard now. Flames smaller. Sweat everywhere.

Yin stood calm. “Your breathing is heavier.”

“Yeah… I go all out.”

“Your heart is fast.”

“Always is.”

“Your steps are slower.”

Kagen looked down at his shaking legs and laughed. “…Oh.”

“You burn very bright.” Yin raised her hand. “But bright flames burn out fast.”

“Heh… worth it.”

He charged one last time.

Yin closed her eyes. “Sound Push.”

A wave hit him – not violent, just strong. He slid back – one step, two, three. His heel crossed the white line.

He stopped, looked down, then laughed loudly. “I LOST!!” He bowed to her. “YOU'RE AMAZING!!”

Yin smiled. “You were very fun.”

“Next time I'll control my fire!” He walked out still laughing.

Isami was smiling. “I love him.”

Kimara shook her head. “He's an idiot.”

Hakimaru admitted, “Strong idiot.”

Yin walked back to her friends.

Isami said, “You didn't even look tired.”

Yin smiled. “I am a little.”

“Liar.”
