Chapter 6:
Seven lost keijus
Chapter 7: The Path Forward
Night. The camp slept. Fires burned low.
Ryosuke sat alone in his tent, staring at his hands. They were steady now – no more shaking. But his eyes were wide, unblinking.
He thought about tomorrow. His match. His chance.
Tomorrow… I prove I'm not just his brother. Tomorrow… I prove I'm Ryosuke.
Fragments of memory flashed: young Ryosuke watching Yotoro train, eyes full of admiration; Figure Clan elders shaking their heads at him; Yotoro becoming a Paragon, the crowd cheering while Ryosuke watched from the back; bullies laughing – "The flop brother! The embarrassment of the Figure Clan!" – and Yotoro's voice echoing: "You're not me. You're you."
Ryosuke clenched his fists.
"I'm ready."
---
The sun rose over the camp.
The arena filled with aspirants. The energy was electric – everyone knew every match mattered.
Saki stood at the high table, her clear voice carrying across the grounds.
"Day three of the Umbra Academy Selection begins. Remember – each of you will have five matches total. No eliminations until the final day. Today is about growth. Today is about proving what you're made of."
The crowd nodded, determined.
Isami sat in the stands, still bandaged but looking better than yesterday. "No eliminations yet… that's good. I have time."
Kimara sat beside him. "You still need wins."
"I know, I know. But today I get to watch you fight."
Kimara stiffened. "Lucky me."
Hakimaru leaned against a rail. "Your match is today, Kimara. Against who?"
She shrugged. "Doesn't matter. I'll win either way."
Yin said gently, "Confidence is good. But every opponent is different."
Kimara said nothing, but her jaw tightened.
The board lit up.
MATCH 8 – RYOSUKE (Figure Clan) vs. TOMA (Poppet Clan)
Ryosuke's name appeared. In the Paragon section, Yotoro watched. His face was stone, but his eyes were fixed on his brother.
Ryosuke walked toward the arena. Alone. Shoulders straight.
Isami watched. Come on, Ryosuke. Show them.
---
Match 8: Ryosuke vs. Toma
Ryosuke stepped into the arena. The crowd buzzed with whispers.
"That's Yotoro's brother."
"The one who lost fast last time?"
"Heard he couldn't last thirty seconds."
Ryosuke's jaw tightened. He heard them, but he didn't look away.
Across the arena, Toma entered. She was different from other Poppet Clan fighters – smaller, quieter. Her eyes were cold, not cruel, just focused. She carried no dolls.
The crowd murmured. "Where are her dolls?" "Poppet Clan without dolls?"
Ryosuke frowned. "You have no dolls?"
Toma's voice was quiet. "I don't need them."
Her hands rose. Chi began to gather around her – thick, visible, pulsating.
"I am my own doll."
Saki raised her hand. "BEGIN."
---
Ryosuke moved first. His eyes flared – Figure Clan symbols ignited.
"IMAGINATION MANIFESTATION – STONE SPEAR!"
A spear formed in his hand – solid, real, physical. He threw it with all his strength.
Toma didn't dodge. She raised one hand. The spear stopped mid‑air – frozen.
Ryosuke's eyes widened. "WHAT?!"
Toma's eyes glowed. Chi threads – invisible – connected from her fingers to the spear.
"Poppet Clan controls chi. Your imagination runs on chi." She smiled – cold, focused. "Which means… your creations are mine."
She twisted her hand. The spear reversed, aimed at Ryosuke.
He dived. The spear slammed into the ground where he had stood – THOOM! – stone shattering, dust exploding.
The crowd gasped. "She controlled his creation?!" "That's advanced Poppet Clan technique!"
Ryosuke rolled to his feet, breathing hard, staring at Toma. "You… you took control of my manifestation?"
"Your chi created it. My chi controls it. Simple."
She raised both hands. Chi threads spread out like a spider's web.
"Create as much as you want. I'll just take it all."
---
Ryosuke tried a different approach. He formed a smaller creation – a stone dagger – keeping it close.
"IMAGINATION MANIFESTATION – STONE DAGGER!"
The dagger formed in his hand. He held it tight, refusing to throw it.
Toma seemed amused. "You think holding it makes a difference?"
Her chi threads latched onto the dagger. She pulled.
Ryosuke fought for control, grunting. The dagger shook in his grip.
"Your chi created it. My chi is stronger. It's MINE now."
She yanked harder. The dagger flew out of his hand – into hers.
She caught it, studied it. "Interesting. Your imagination is… creative. I can feel the shape you wanted. Sharp. Balanced."
Her eyes glowed brighter.
"Let me show you what REAL control looks like."
She raised her free hand. Chi threads spread out – not just to control, but to amplify. The stone dagger grew, changed shape, became something new – a larger blade, more refined, more deadly. It pulsed with amplified chi.
Ryosuke's eyes widened. "You… you're enhancing my creation?"
"I told you. I am my own doll. My chi doesn't just control – it amplifies. Your imagination gives me raw material. I make it BETTER."
She threw the amplified blade back at him – faster, sharper, deadlier.
Ryosuke dove behind a stone pillar. The blade sliced through it like butter – then through the next pillar behind it.
The crowd gasped louder. "She's amplifying his creations?!" "That's Poppet Clan ability at work!"
Ryosuke crouched behind what was left of the pillars, breathing hard, mind racing.
---
Toma didn't let up. She advanced slowly, chi threads spreading wider.
"You can run. You can hide. But every moment you think… I get stronger."
She created her own manifestation now – using the amplified chi she had drained from Ryosuke. A stone wolf formed beside her. Then another. Then a third.
Ryosuke's voice was horrified. "You're using MY chi to create YOUR own weapons?!"
"I told you. I am my own doll. Your chi is fuel. Your imagination is material. I am the craftsman."
The stone wolves charged.
Ryosuke ran – dodged – one lunged – he rolled – another snapped at his heels. He created a stone shield – Toma controlled it immediately, flinging it away.
"Nothing works! Nothing WORKS!"
He was backed against the arena wall. Three stone wolves circled. Toma walked closer, chi threads spreading like a web.
"You fought well. But well isn't enough."
Ryosuke's eyes darted around, looking for any option. Then he heard echoes in his memory: Isami's voice – "I don't care if I can't win. I'll PROVE their faith wasn't wasted." And Yotoro's voice – "Power without heart is just noise. You have both."
Ryosuke's eyes focused.
Heart. I have heart.
---
He stood up straight. Empty hands. No manifestations. No seals.
Toma paused. "Giving up?"
"No."
He walked toward her. Slowly. Deliberately. Directly through the wolves.
"The wolves will tear you apart."
"They're made of my chi. They won't hurt me."
The wolves snarled – but when he walked past them, they didn't attack. They whined, confused.
Toma's eyes widened. "What—?"
"You amplified my chi. But amplified chi still remembers its owner."
He kept walking. Closer. Closer.
"I'll control YOU next!"
She sent chi threads at him – aiming to wrap around his body, control his movements. He didn't dodge.
The threads touched his skin.
"Got you—!"
Ryosuke grabbed the threads.
"SEAL CRAFTING – REVERSE BIND!"
Symbols exploded from his hands – not on the ground, but along the threads – shooting toward Toma faster than she could react.
"WHAT?!"
The seals raced up the threads, reached her hands – SNAP! – locked around her wrists, then spread to her elbows, her shoulders, her waist.
She struggled, panicking. "I can't – I can't move – I CAN'T MOVE!"
"You can control chi. But seals control energy. And your chi threads are FULL of my energy now."
He stood before her. She was completely trapped, bound by her own threads, amplified by his seals.
"This is… this is impossible…"
"I learned from Isami. If you can't beat them at their game… change the game."
He looked at her. No anger. Just understanding.
"You're strong, Toma. Really strong. But strength isn't just about control. It's about knowing when to let go."
He stepped back.
"Match over."
Silence. Then the crowd exploded.
Saki's voice rang out. "Winner: Ryosuke of the Figure Clan!"
Ryosuke released the seals. Toma stumbled forward, gasping, staring at her hands, then at him.
"You… you used my own amplified chi… against me…"
"You amplified my creations. I amplified your threads."
He offered his hand.
She took it slowly. "…You're not a failure. You're… you're really strong."
Ryosuke almost smiled. "I'm starting to believe that."
She stood, looked at him for a long moment. "Next time… I'll be ready for seals."
"And I'll be ready for whatever you bring."
She nodded and walked away.
Ryosuke looked toward the high table – toward Yotoro. His brother didn't cheer, didn't move. But his eyes were wet. He nodded once.
Ryosuke's face crumpled, just slightly. Then he straightened.
I'm Ryosuke. And that's enough.
---
Aftermath – Friends React
Isami was on his feet, screaming. "DID YOU SEE THAT?! He walked through the wolves! He used her own power against her!"
Hakimaru was genuinely impressed. "That was brilliant. He turned her strength into her weakness. Twice."
Yin nodded. "He listened. He heard what she was doing. He found the counter when all seemed lost."
Kimara watched Ryosuke quietly. "He's not the same person from yesterday."
Ryosuke walked past their section. He saw Isami and stopped.
"Seventeen times," he said quietly.
Isami grinned. "You keep saying that."
"Because it keeps working."
He nodded and walked away.
Isami stared after him, chest swelling with pride. I think I've got a new friend. He said aloud, "I'm a role model. This is weird."
Kimara smirked. "Get used to it."
---
Match 9: Kimara vs. Haruki
The board lit up again.
MATCH 9 – KIMARA (Water Clan) vs. HARUKI (Sound Clan)
Kimara's eyes narrowed. "Sound Clan."
Yin tilted her head. "Haruki… I know that name. He's strong. Very strong."
Hakimaru added, "Sound Clan vs. Water Clan. Vibration vs. Flow."
Isami pumped his fist. "You've got this!"
Kimara stood. "Of course I do."
She walked toward the arena. Yin called after her, "Listen carefully, Kimara. Sound Clan fights differently. Don't just block – feel the vibrations through your water. Let your water be your ears."
Kimara paused, looked back, and nodded once.
---
Kimara stepped into the arena. Calm. Focused. Water already swirling around her arms in slow, deliberate patterns.
Across from her, Haruki entered. Tall, lean, sharp features. His eyes were closed – not blind like Yin, but focused inward, listening to everything. He wore the Sound Clan symbol proudly. The air around him vibrated constantly, like a living thing.
He stopped and opened his eyes slowly.
"Kimara of the Water Clan. I watched your match against Jin. Creative. Strong."
"Thanks."
"You're pretty smart."
"Smart."
"You watch a lot."
"Sound Clan listens. Watching is just another form of listening."
He raised his hands. The air shimmered visibly – waves of distortion radiating outward.
"Let's see if water can flow against sound. Or if sound will shatter water."
Saki raised her hand. "BEGIN."
---
Haruki didn't move. He clapped once.
BOOM!
A shockwave exploded toward Kimara – invisible but devastating, the ground cracking in its path. Her water shield formed instantly – AQUA WALL! – but the shockwave hit, and the shield shattered into a thousand droplets.
Kimara's eyes widened. "WHAT—?!"
She was thrown back, sliding across the dirt, feet digging trenches. She stopped herself at the edge, breathing hard, staring at Haruki.
"Your sound… it broke my water?"
"Sound is vibration. Water is fluid. Vibration disrupts fluid. Basic physics."
He clapped again – harder.
BOOM!
Another shockwave – bigger, faster. Kimara dived, rolled, the wave passing over her, clipping her shoulder. She spun, recovered.
"You can dodge. But you can't block. And you can't dodge forever."
He attacked again and again. Shockwave after shockwave. The arena shook. Dust flew. Craters formed.
Kimara ran, weaved, dived, slid.
"She can't get close!" someone in the crowd shouted. "Sound Clan range is insane!"
Kimara slid behind a broken pillar, gasping. Her shoulder bled where the shockwave had clipped her.
His sound breaks my water. If I can't block… I need to move differently.
---
Kimara charged – not straight, but zigzag.
Haruki saw her pattern. He clapped – BOOM! – aimed where she was going. She felt the vibration through the ground, changed direction – the wave missed by inches.
He attacked again – BOOM! – she weaved, closer.
Again – BOOM! – she was within ten meters.
"SOUND PULSE – WIDE!"
A massive wave – not focused, but wide – covered the entire area. Kimara couldn't dodge it all. She raised her arms, water forming a thin layer. The wave hit – she was thrown back, but the water layer absorbed some. She landed hard, rolled, came up fighting.
Panting, she said, "You're… really strong."
Haruki nodded. "You're really persistent."
He attacked again – this time moving forward, closing the distance himself. Ten meters apart. Then eight. Then five.
He clapped – BOOM! – point blank. Kimara ducked – the wave passed over – she swept his legs with water. He jumped, landed, kicked – a sound burst from his foot. She blocked with ice – the ice cracked – she slid.
They were trading blows now. Up close. Personal.
The crowd went wild. "SHE'S ACTUALLY FIGHTING HIM UP CLOSE!" "NO ONE FIGHTS SOUND CLAN UP CLOSE!"
Kimara threw a water punch – he dodged – countered with a sound palm – she blocked with ice – ice shattered – she spun – water whip – he ducked – sound kick – she jumped.
Back and forth. Relentless. Beautiful.
---
Both fighters breathed hard. Both bled. Both exhausted.
Haruki grinned. "This is… the best fight… I've had."
Kimara grinned back. "Same."
They clashed again. She remembered Yin's words: "Let your water be your ears."
She spread a thin layer of water across the ground – connecting herself to every vibration.
Haruki attacked – BOOM! – she felt the vibration through the water, not with her ears but with her chi. She knew exactly where it was going. She stepped into it – used the vibration to propel herself forward.
Haruki's eyes widened. "WHAT?!"
She was inside his guard. Water already wrapping around his chest.
"WATER PRISON – CONTAIN."
A sphere formed around him – not his head, his whole body – trapping him.
He struggled, muffled. Sound pulses inside cracked the sphere.
"FLASH FREEZE – LAYER."
Ice formed over the water, reinforcing it. Haruki struggled harder. Ice cracked. Water cracked. Kimara poured more chi into it.
Ten seconds. Fifteen. Twenty.
The crowd was silent.
Finally, Haruki tapped the sphere three times – surrender.
Kimara released it. He fell to his knees, gasping and laughing.
"You… you used the water… to feel my vibrations…"
Kimara collapsed to her knees. "Yin's advice. Water can't hear. But it can feel."
"Clever. Very clever. You almost broke three times. But you held on."
They stared at each other across the destroyed arena. Both on their knees. Both exhausted. Both smiling.
Saki's voice came after a long, emotional pause. "Winner… Kimara of the Water Clan."
The crowd erupted like never before.
Kimara and Haruki were both helped to their feet by arena attendants.
Haruki offered his hand. "Best fight I've ever had."
Kimara took it. "Same."
He nodded and walked away, limping but proud.
Kimara stumbled toward her friends.
---
Isami was crying. Actually crying. "THAT WAS THE GREATEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN!"
Kimara collapsed onto a bench. "Shut up."
"YOU'RE BOTH BLEEDING! YOU'RE BOTH EXHAUSTED! YOU TRADED BLOWS UP CLOSE WITH A SOUND CLAN FIGHTER!"
Hakimaru was genuinely impressed. "That was… incredible. You adapted mid‑fight. You used the water to feel his vibrations. You won by a hair."
Yin smiled. "You listened through your water. You felt. You moved. Perfect."
Kimara breathed hard. "Haruki is… terrifying. If he had one more second… I would have lost."
"But you DIDN'T!" Isami insisted.
Kimara almost smiled. "…No. I didn't."
---
Later, away from the crowd, Yin sat alone near a small stream. Her blind eyes were closed, her head tilted, listening to the water flow.
Footsteps approached. Slow. Steady. Familiar.
She didn't need to see who it was.
"Hakimaru."
He sat beside her – not too close, not too far. Just present.
A long, comfortable silence.
"You're thinking," he said quietly.
"Always."
"About today?"
"About many things."
More silence. The stream bubbled gently.
"Haruki is strong. You knew him?"
Yin nodded slightly. "We trained together. Long ago. He was always… loud."
Hakimaru almost smiled. "Sound Clan. Being loud is their thing."
She gave a soft chuckle. "Yes."
Another pause.
"You taught Kimara well. She listened to your advice. She won because of you."
Yin shook her head. "She won because of herself. I only reminded her to use her water differently."
"That's what you do. You remind people to see what they already have."
Yin turned her face toward him – blind, but seeing. "And you? What do you do?"
Hakimaru thought. "I push. I train. I fight."
"You also protect."
He looked at her. His mismatched eyes – one hidden behind his hair, one visible – softened.
"…Someone has to."
"You protect without speaking. Without needing thanks. You just… are there."
She reached out, hesitated, then gently touched his arm.
"Thank you."
Hakimaru stared at her hand, then at her face. "For what?"
"For being here. For being still. For being you."
A long silence. The stream flowed.
"You're the only one who says that," he whispered.
Yin smiled softly. "Good."
They sat together. No words needed. Just presence.
As the sun continued its slow descent, their bodies leaned together – just slightly. Watching the sky.
