Chapter 10:

Ten - A little bit of sun

After the Rain

Because of the victory there is now a lot of tension in the air.

We are at war. It is not over.

It is nice to have sunlight on my skin again. Spending mre than thirty days underground made my skin turn gray. I am feeling energetic again.

The caravan is moving at fast pace.

We are four cars and a truck. Now I understand what my grandma said about the desert nomads.

We are so fast that it looks like we are actually flying.

I thought it would take days to come back, but here we are after just half one.

We got tho this small village.

People started to unload supplies and carry them inside a building. Ana, the leader of the caravan came to say good bye. “Follow this path and you’ll be on the main road in a few hours. We need to move quick and hide all of this. Be careful. They are now much more violent than ever.”

I depart with not so much comforting words.

The road was empty.

I kept my attention high either way.

I am feeling a bit weird inside. Nostalgic, maybe.

Seeing the people that are living inside the tunnels. They are like a family. This big community that helps each other. I miss my family a lot. A month ago I thought I was going to meet them.

I still have a lot to process.

About everything.

Maybe there is something beyond the vengeance.

What if there is an after?

Eight years ago I was completely lost.

A lot of angry.

I cried every day at night. I was barely sleep.

I mostly just passed out.

Every time I tried closing my eyes I saw my family dying in front of me.

I think it was about three or four months after escaping. I was nothing. A small famished child. Stealing to survive. Scared of using magic. But this one day I was running for my life. My feet hurt. Standing up was almost impossible. It was just a piece of bread but this man was pursuing me like I stole all his fortune.

I was tired.

He backed me into a corner. I thought I was going to die.

I exploded.

My magic got out of control. I got out of control.

At first I felt relief.

I was breathing after days and days drowning inside my head.

A man approached me. He helped me hide. He fed me food.

I do not know why I trusted him so easy.

I was scared.

I did not had strength to say no.

He was the who trained me. I stayed at his care for fifteen months. He was a skilled warrior. He did not use any magic, at least he did not show any. But I kept practicing mine.

I needed to be in touch with it again. Magic is a part of everyone. Even for the people that can not use it. That is why to forbid magic is to forbid people from being their true selves.

This man was the one who recruited me.

He had no name.

He took away mine.

The night he left, I dreamed of my first mission.

I finally got to the main road.

Ana was right. Patrols are coming up and down the road. Very frequently. I was keeping a distance. Hiding my face. Being very discreet. Advancing like this is not a safe option.

I don not know if Consul Olvad took a like to my face and I am the number one wanted criminal now. He probably thinks I am dead. But if he survived I could probably had survived too.

Do I count on him underestimating me?

There are some other people on the road too. If I just act normal no one will notice me. Keep on the low.

I am acting as unsuspicious as I can. It seems to be working so far. Just a few more kilometers and I can get out of the main road.

It is very risky to pass through the capital. Suicidal. So no cutting path. I have to take the long way and go around the whole metropolis.

My feet are hurting.

Just ignore my feet.

I will rest when I am out of danger.

The clothes, equipment and food the nomads supplied me are enough for a couple of days on the road.

I am finally out of the main road.

This path will be less intense.

People normally got through the city to get to the other side. You do not need to walk. There is transportation from one point to the extreme other.

I can not count on having this luxury now. They built giant walls suffocating the city. The Capital was never like this. People could freely come and go as they please. Now you have entrance points where the guards search and note who is in and who is out.

What am I thinking?

I am tired right now.

I will stop in the next inn or bar I see.

I walked a whole day already.

Walking was not much of a thing down on the tunnels. They had carts to go everywhere. The carts went by with electricity. Even under the tunnels people restrain their use of magic. We can never be reckless. At least not for now.

Down to a distance I see a building. I will finally get some rest.

The inn is almost at full capacity, I manage to get the last room. The owners said that the business are thriving since the north conquer their freedom. More people like me are avoiding going inside the Capital. But that also means that this rout is also being surveilled.

I must be careful.

No dreams.

I left just as the sun was rising.

I am starting to think that the organization actually thinks I am dead. All this days had passed and not one dream.

Not one mission.

It never has been this much without any communication.

I have my own objective now. There are many ways to aid the rebellion.

A couple more hours down the road I get to a bifurcation.

The roads south are going uphill. The south mountains are huge. From this point on, the path begins to rise gradually until we reach the mountain ranges.

The other path, the road east. To the forest. I do not know why I was being called that way. I could go around a little bit more and get to the mountains from another way around.

Probably a more safe way.

Even the Capital would not dare to go inside the forest.

I? I know this way.

But I have not been to this area in a long time.

What is happening to me now?

I think I am going back home after eight years.
