Chapter 4:

Fragment 1

Hero Candidate #756

Let's go back to the beginning.

There was once a single boy. A boy who bore the burden of the stars. No matter how many worlds had gone by he alone remembered them all.

For he had an important goal—he was tasked with saving the world.

The boy's path was lonely and lined with both failures and successes. Whenever he succeeded, people would thank him.

"Oh, thank you! May Goddess bless your soul!" "Oh, you are our light of hope!"

They would sing his praises and cry tears of happiness. That gratitude was binding, and the boy felt that he had to continue his path no matter what. For without him, there would be no smiles.

And whenever he failed, he would hear cries of derision.

"Why couldn't you come sooner?" "Why didn't you save her?!" "Who can save us if not you?!"

They would blame and weep, unable to come to terms with their loss. That sorrow was suffocating, and the boy felt like had to do better. For if he didn't, the tears would continue.

It was only natural. They were powerless, and he was trying to become the Hero. The boy never questioned that part of the arrangement. After all, he had no time to consider it.

But eventually, a tragedy happened, and a single doubt entered his mind.

Was it really just? Did those who have powers have to suffer so much just because they were special? Was the world that was built on sacrifices truly righteous?

He had harbored those doubts for a long time. And finally, he came to a conclusion.

This world was twisted.
