Chapter 11:
Final Verdict
Past
River: Commander!
Commander Mercer: Malia, inspect the weapon.
Commander Mercer: [Walks over to River]. You protected Warui well.
Commander Mercer: Tell us your read on the situation.
River: The- the men that threw strange daggers that came out of their wrists.
Malia: Warui, can you swing it?
Chena: People just tried to kill him.
Chena: Warui, don’t get up.
Kiel: She's right, we're not in the clear
Warui: If someone attacks, you guys are the ones getting hurt.
Zay: What are we doing Duncan?
Zay: None of us are armed and we're in the open.
Malia: Stares intensely at the dark red weapon in Warui's hand.
Malia: [Under her breath]. It really has veins.
River: The daggers disappeared and left behind a puddle.
Commander Mercer: Looks at the ground between them.
River: Oh uh- it's gone now sir.
River: The puddle evaporated in seconds.
Commander Mercer: Okay.
Commander Mercer: Everyone, listen!
Present
Commander Dirk: Looks toward Commander Mercer as they sit across from each other in a carriage.
Commander Dirk: So objects that resembled daggers came out of their wrists?
Commander Mercer: Precisely.
Commander Dirk: The daggers took on a liquid form after impact too…
Commander Dirk: The hell are we dealing with?
Commander Mercer: We must now assume that Warui isn’t an exception to such strange abilities.
Commander Dirk: We’ve never heard of any secret weapons programs though.
Commander Mercer: Anything is possible at this point.
Commander Mercer: Those men had the perfect ability for slipping into an event where weapons weren't allowed.
Commander Dirk: They did it in broad daylight and showed their faces.
Commander Dirk: It must’ve been worth doing.
Commander Dirk: And they’re capable of taking extreme risks.
Commander Dirk: If you’re serious about entering the capital, you better have Warui in a secure location.
Commander Mercer: I won’t limit the enemy to just those two assassins.
Commander Dirk: I didn’t ask you where he was.
Commander Mercer: Forgive me.
Commander Dirk: It’s fine, I know you’re worked up here.
Commander Dirk: Don’t worry, I have the whole branch on this too.
Commander Dirk: At the moment, it’s extremely difficult to leave Valeria or Seria City without being seen.
Commander Dirk: I'm just not quite sure what you say to the officials.
Commander Mercer: Sees a mother, father, and their child walk along the side of the road.
Commander Dirk: What happened with Warui isn't public knowledge either.
Commander Dirk: Only our branches and the government had access to the Avelorn report.
Commander Mercer: [Under his breath]. The report...
Commander Mercer: ...Tell me.
Commander Mercer: Our operation in Fort Avelorn.
Commander Mercer: Could it have gone differently?
Commander Dirk: I can’t say.
Commander Dirk: Reading the report and being there is different.
Commander Dirk: …I know there are families there traumatized.
Commander Dirk: Civilians may not have died, Mercer, but where they lived.
Commander Dirk: It turned into a battlefield.
Commander Mercer: Stares at his open palm.
Commander Dirk: …Did your soldiers recognize their faces?
Commander Mercer: No, I highly doubt these people are from Tiria.
Commander Mercer: If they are, there must be something they think is worth fighting for.
Carriage: ...
Commander Dirk: Duncan…
Commander Dirk: All these years.
Commander Dirk: You never once told me what you’re fighting for.
Commander Mercer: ...
Commander Mercer: I have a favor to ask...
Warui: Slowly opens his eyes while sitting against a wall and sees Zay sitting on the floor staring through an open doorway. A man and woman lean against the wall to the right.
Warui: Captain?
Zay: I'd say a quarter of the day's gone by.
Zay: We’re laying low for a few days.
Warui: Where’s everyone else?
Zay: You mean your friends? Or are you actually concerned about the entire branch?
Warui: M- my friends.
Zay: They’re with Malia.
Zay: Commander Mercer wants them to stay in Valeria City and figure out the enemy.
Warui: The enemy?
Warui: Holds his head and grimaces.
Zay: [Groans]. You don’t even remember?
Woman: Give him a break, Zay.
Woman: He’s just a kid.
Woman: Looks like he’s got a headache too.
Warui: It barely hurts.
Zay: People tried to kill you at the memorial.
Zay: Your friend got you out the line of fire.
Zay: Then you summoned the weapon.
Warui: A scene plays in his head.
Past
River: Runs, bumps into Chena, and tackles Warui.
Warui: Falls to the ground with River and avoids the projectiles as Warui looks in the direction of the men.
Two Men: Throw two more dagger-like objects.
Warui: Puts his hand out instinctively and shuts his eyes.
Dark Red Object: Suddenly appears in Warui's hand and he closes his grip on the handle-like end as the dagger-like objects deflect off the end that resembles a blade and land on the ground.
Present
Warui: Right…
Warui: River saved me.
Warui: Then…
Warui: Another scene replays in his head.
Past
Commander Mercer: Everyone, listen!
Commander Mercer: Malia, form a squad.
Malia: Snaps out of staring at the weapon.
Commander Mercer: Zay, I've got a specific task for you.
Commander Mercer: Whoever I didn't name or isn't chosen to Malia's squad, I want half of you to be in the barracks here in Valeria and the other half to make your way to Seria.
Everyone: Yes, sir!
Everyone: Begin leaving the memorial site.
Malia: [Holds her arms out toward Chena, River, Khyrie, Kiel, and Sarah]. You guys are with me.
Zay: Duncan, we need to move immediately.
Commander Mercer: There are still wardens on the perimeter.
Commander Mercer: Warui is also being shielded.
Warui: Forces himself to stand through all of his friends' body blocking.
Warui: We need t-
Warui: T- to...
Chena: Warui!
Dark Red Object: Vanishes from Warui's hand in an instant.
Warui's POV: Slowly tightens and fades to black.
Present
Zay: Then you passed out at the same time the weapon disappeared from your hand.
Warui: Blinks a few times then looks between the two people against the wall.
Warui: S- so who are they?
Zay: She’s Ela, that’s Lio.
Zay: They’re as good as any soldier in the Army.
Lio: We’re better than any soldier.
Ela: Hello there. We’re the two people Zay trusts the most.
Lio: He won’t admit it though.
Warui: I’ve never seen you guys in the Army?
Ela: Ugh, no. Who the hell wants to do that shit?
Lio: Ela, they’re both Army.
Ela: Forgive me.
Ela: I meant.
Ela: [Straightens her posture and says plainly]. No, I’m not Army.
Warui: Why’d you choose them, Captain?
Ela: Do we seriously look that weak?
Warui: Oh no, I-
Warui: I didn’t mean it like that-
Zay: Mercer doesn’t want anyone in the Army knowing your location or anywhere near you.
Zay: Better safe than sorry.
Warui: Where are we, Captain?
Zay: Deep in the woods outside of Seria City.
Ela: That girl tried following us.
Warui: [His eyes snap toward Ela]. D- did she have brown hair?
Ela: Yeah, if you ask me, she has attachment issues.
Warui: Sorry…
Warui: Don’t mind her.
Zay: [Flatly]. Alright, your introductions are out of the way.
Zay: Stands, walks toward Warui, crouches in front of him and looks him in the eyes.
Zay: Tell us.
Zay: How’d you call out the sword?
