Chapter 942:
En Passant Grandmaster
Laying in her bed with her jaw bandaged up, Miyako struggled to sleep thanks to Imono continuing to bang on the cell bars. "Still daylight, loser. Get your ass out n' play punching bag again!" Imono cackled.
Miyako wanted to scream back, yet with her jaw in the state it was in, she couldn't. That, and there was no telling when Vasily might take control of her body again, potentially leading to a repeat of earlier. Thus, Miyako decided it was best to remain in her cell as at least it could be locked. However, the guards had no issue with Imono continuously harassing her from the other side of the bars, making things hellish for her.
"Flukey, flukey, you're a flukey loser, you didn't win, Rina lost, you ain't got no real skillz!" Imono mockingly sang as she continued to kick the bars.
"Stop it! This ain't gonna do jack for us!" Milady fumed as she grabbed Imono by the shoulder.
"Um, it's called outcasting. See when there's-"
"I said STOP!" Milady shouted as she shoved Imono to the ground.
"You're just hating cuz I beat you. Ah, losers gotta stick together, but wait, you didn't have a fluke yesterday like she did! And all you got today was a draw from loner girl. That's the freebie."
As the two began arguing, Miyako tried her best to drown out the noise, but it was a feeble effort. Then suddenly, a guard approached the cell carrying a tray containing a cup of water and what looked to be a small pill.
"Here, you take," the guard grumbled as he slid the tray into the cell.
Finding her body moving on its own again, Miyako resigned herself as she picked up the pill and the water. "Maybe this is a sleeping pill. That would at least bring me some relief?" she thought as she peeled back her bandages and downed the pill.
...
Miyako moaned and groaned as she slowly opened her eyes. The lights were on in the main room, yet no one seemed to be out and about. Upon touching her face, she noticed the bandages were gone and that her face felt fine, as if it had been fully healed. Crawling out of bed, she noticed the black-haired woman was fast asleep in the top bunk.
"I'm curious how long I was out for, but I don't want to wake her. The lights are on, so maybe there's guards around," Miyako thought as she peered outside the cell.
Though no guards were in sight, the holographic standings board was still present in the center. Lowri currently led with 2 points while everyone else, save for Milady, was tied at 1 point each.
"That girl who saved me, she's in last place. And it says I need to play her next. Wait, I need to play her next!? That means it's the next day already! But, why are the lights on? Is it morning? Did they just leave them on? Ngh, I want to call out, but I don't want to wake someone like Imono. She'd just harass me," Miyako thought.
Thus, at a stalemate, Miyako sat back down on the bed and waited. Her patience paid off as what felt like 5 minutes later, a guard walked by along with Milady.
"You're up!?" Miyako gasped as she rushed up to the bars.
"Mmm? Oh, wamma pmmph?" Milady asked as she struggled to contain the pancakes she had stuffed in her mouth from falling out.
"Pancakes!? I want some!"
...
Milady nervously smiled as she watched Miyako snarf down a plate full of pancakes. "They did say we were supposed to share these amongst ourselves, so if you eat all those-"
"Om ungry!" Miyako grumbled as she continued to embrace gluttony.
"Eh, I held myself back, but if you're eating em all anyway, might as well have some more helpings."
That being said, most of the pancakes Milady snatched ended up going into her cleavage, rather than her stomach. Both the guards and Miyako saw it all, yet none intervened. All the guards cared about were that the plastic utensils they provided were all accounted for, while Miyako, just wanted to eat.
"Pwah! It's been days since I last ate," Miyako blissfully sighed as she patted her stomach.
"These bastards are starving us, but that's all the more reason we should be trying to share things. Starvation can drive folks mad, specially if it's caused by someone they hate snarfing down all the food."
"Is that why-"
"Oh, these are just for Lowri."
"Huh? But-"
"Ah, your cellmate already came for breakfast, so no worries."
"No, you just said-"
"I don't want my friends to go crazy. That Russian probably got a full-course meal delivered straight to her suite when we weren't looking, so why should we save any for her?"
"'Suite'?"
"Yeah, the guards forced us to take sleeping pills, all except her. Why? so they could bring her to a luxury suite to relax."
"But this is a prison!"
"Prisons can have 5-star hotel rooms in em, that's how they keep some of the most notorious criminals from escaping."
Miyako wearily nodded as she conceded the point. "Still, they shaved her head, and she didn't look-"
"Trust me, Russians are lying filth. They strike you from behind the moment your back is turned, in broad daylight too, then run to their KGB operatives who arrest YOU for beating yourself up from behind. That's how I even got here anyway; because the Russians just decided they wanted to arrest me, so there was the "crime" and justification for tossing me in the gulag."
"You weren't at the party?"
"'Party'? I've been locked up for months, then they finally decided to move me here. Guess they wanna get rid of me since I still don't know how these damn horses are supposed to move."
"Didn't you play a game on your first day?"
Milady shook her head. "That's the weird part. I didn't play any games, neither did Lowri, least without my knowing, but Lowri ended up getting shaved. Must be Russian's pick. Damn fuckers. Speaking of games, let's have our game right now. Wanna draw, or do you want a win? You know what, take a win as a sign of our bond. Yeah, you win today, I win next time we play. That's my new policy going forward," Milady nodded as a guard slammed a chess set down on the table.
Miyako nodded enthusiastically, but internally, she was panicking. "My body... it's moving on its own," she thought.
"And resigning's fine, right?" Milady asked.
The guards turned to each other before nodding.
"I resign!"
And thus, Miyako had won by doing absolutely nothing.
"Just remember our promise, kay," Milady winked as she trotted away.
Finding herself back in control of her body, Miyako slowly exhaled, then inhaled. "What have I just done... against my will?"
The full game:
White: Miyako Suwabe Black: Milady Shaw
(White wins due to Black's resignation)
