Chapter 8:

To my younger self

5 min stories to keep you company

«Tap»

I gave one final step.

I could see the city in front of me. The tall buildings looked so tiny from up here.

I looked down to the vast bottom.

“How nice...”- I said to myself. There were so many people were walking around without a care in the world.

“Even if I died today, nobody would bat an eye, huh?” - I thought to myself.

I took a deep breath.

There was no longer hesitation in my mind.

-

«Whoosh»

Suddenly, a big gust of wind slapped me in the face. It was very cold.

“Ugh...”- I grumbled. The violent breeze had forced me to close my eyes.

Slowly... I tried to open them once again. The light hurt my eyes.

-

  “What are you doing?”

A young voice called up to me. It took me a while to finishing opening my eyes.

A small girl was staring at me. Dumbfounded, I looked around as quickly as I could.

I was inside what looked like a living room.

  “Huh...?”

I was confused. Wasn’t I just at...

  “Hey! Are you listening?!”

The young girl had stopped my inner monologue with her small upset voice.

  “Ah...yeah...”

I clumsily spoke out. To be honest, I was still pretty confused.

“Why are you at my house, miss? It’s rude to enter without permission.”

The small girl pouted.

   “...Your....house?”

Now that you mention it... yeah it was indeed a house.

  “Yeah! Are you a stealer?”

“No...I’m not. Also...the word you are looking for is 'thief'”.

   “Stealer!” - The girl insisted.

Honestly, I don’t have time for this.

I sighed to myself, and turned around. There should be a door somewhere, right?

  “Wait!”

Before I could take a single step, the girl had grabbed my arm and started pulling it.

  “Sigh...what do you want?”

   “I’m bored, let’s play!”

Is this girl serious?

The little girl gave me a wide grin, and ran back to her TV.

  “TV?”

“Yup! My favourite show is on!”

   “Ah, yeah...”

She started pressing the buttons 'till she reached the channel she wanted. Even if I tried to get away, she would just grab me again, right? If you ask me, it’s pointless. Yeah...everything is pointless...

  “Ready!”

The small girl yelled out in happiness. How annoying...

«But even in rainy days, a new day is going to come♫ »

  “Huh?”

«The future is just around the corner, even if it’s raining ‘cuz sunny days are going to come ♫ »

“Everybody sing, sing, sing! The sun is smiling at you! ♫"

The little girl started singing and dancing along.

“Jump, jump, jump! Run! Run! Run!

  “This song...”

“You gotta believe in your own song ♫ “

   “Just like the stars... shining...?”

“Miss!”  The girl turned around smiling. “Wow! Do you know this song? It’s my favourite!”

   “Huh...ah...yeah...I think?”

Why do I know this song, again?

  “It’s ‘Ring a magic bell'!”

  “Ring...a bell...?”

In that moment, I realized. Yeah, of course I know this stupid song. I looked at the girl in front of me. Of course... It all makes sense now.

“Ring! Ring! Ring a magic bell! ♫ ”

The girl had gotten bored of waiting for my reaction, so she had simply resumed her dancing.

“When you ring it, your dream will come true! ♫ ”

Yeah...

How could I had forgotten...

Back then, all I wanted was to sing.

It didn’t matter if I was good or bad. Honestly, I just wanted to sing and have fun.

When did I start getting obsessed with not being good enough?

“Ring! Ring! The magic days are going to come! ♫ ”

I chuckled to myself and let out a sad smile.

Yeah... magic days...huh...

Those days were truly magical...

«Whoosh»

Suddenly, a strong gust of wind forced me to close my eyes.

-

«Beep, beep, beeeeeeeep»

«Honkkkkkk»

So noisy...

My head hurt like crazy.

I opened my eyes. All I could see was the vast sky.

“Huh?”

I was lying down in the cold concrete.

  “Ugh...”

I sat down clumsily. Just where I am this time...?

It took me a while to realize I was still at the rooftop. Seems the sudden wind had knocked me over.

I chuckled to myself.

Seems my younger self had given me a lesson.

Thank you, my younger self.
