Chapter 4:

Way back

No particular plan

It came time to sleep. I let Akira sleep in the warmest room. I wasn't going to sleep in the same room as her even if it meant I will be having a pretty cold night. I tried to fall asleep but the image of my dad was still haunting me. After some time I finally fall asleep, even so, I had so many nightmares that I started questioning if staying awake was a better choice. A ray of light accompanied by some noise wakes me up. I get out of the room and go downstairs. Apparently, Akira had already woken up.
"Good morning!" I say with a very sleepy voice.
"Good morning! You really slept a lot"
"I can't argue against that. Anyway, are we ready to leave?"
"I am ready, but I should be the one asking you that question"
I didn't really know how to reply to that so I just said "Right...". Not much time later I was ready to go, so we didn't waste any more time and left the house. I took a last glimpse at it and started walking away.

We checked if the road was clear and it looked like there wasn't any danger. We were again walking silently. There was again no subject to talk about. It was the end of autumn, the days were colder and colder, the landscape was grey, even the last leaves were gone, but something was sticking out of the landscape. A small black figure. After we approached a bit I realized the black figure was a bunny. The bunny was black and had a red stripe on his back, his teeth were very big. It looked harmless,  but  his appearance made us a bit skeptical. We approached the bunny very slowly while trying to not make any sounds. I was very nervous but continued walking slowly but then I heard "crack"  I stepped on a branch. The bunny looked at us. I try to get my knife out but I could not do it in time. The bunny started running towards me with his teeth out.  He jumped straight at me, at the last second I caught him in my hands and tried to keep him away from my face. While I was keeping the bunny still, Akira picked the knife and stabbed the rabbit. The rabbit let out a very loud scream, but in the distance, we heard another scream.  "I think he calls for help!" I shouted. We started running. There were more and more screams coming from the distance.  When we passed in front of a house I spotted a bike. It was not in the best condition but we had no choice. "I will drive and you will stay on the carrier!" I said. We started going downhill at high speed. The bicycle had no brakes but that was not our biggest problem. After some very close calls, we approached the gate. But there was still a problem. We had no breaks, so I had to stop the wheel with my foot. I put my foot on the wheel and hoped it will slow down. I knew I could not make it stop entirely but I was hoping it will at least reduce its speed. My shoe was ripping apart but at least we were slowing down. We finally made contact with the gate, thankfully in one piece. We were a little hurt by the impact but nothing too serious. We started shouting so that someone will open the gate. After like 10 seconds we heard the gate opening. After all this time I was finally home.
