Chapter 4:

The Lion at the dinner table

Timeline

Damien walked into the kitchen, with both of his arms. He saw his mother at the stove, and his brother at the table. The were both in lion suits for some reason. Damien sat by his brother. As they made eye contact, they both randomly laughed. His mother laid two plates on the table. She looked down at them, and smiled. Damien and his brother made eye contact again, then laughed some more, as his mother poured a drink in their cups. He was at ease, until the sound of Mrs. Mathews interrupted everything. Everything turned red, and his brother slammed his face into the wall, multiple times till blood covered his face. His mother sat in the corner, crying. She was so far away. Damien reached towards her, till he noticed that he only had 1 arm. He looked at his arm, as the grim reminder came across him, and his happy expression dropped. Everything dropped. Then, he woke up.
"Damien! Hurry up, your new father is here!" Mrs. Mathews called, excitedly. Damien stared up at the ceiling, before getting up. He made it downstairs, to see Mrs. Mathews kiss a man. "I'm still a bit surprised that you're actually home on time." She whispered.
"Yea, whatever," the man said, chuckling. They walked into the kitchen, not even noticing Damien. Damien followed afterwards, sitting at the table by Dillion. The man sat down, and looked at Damien, smiling. "Hello, Damien. I'm Mr. Mathews." Damien turned towards him, and muttered, "hello." He turned back to his food. Mr. Mathews turned to Mrs. Mathews. She shrugged. Mr. Mathews pulled a little lion out of his briefcase. "So, son. I got you a present-"
"I don't want it." Damien said, cringing. He looked away. Mr. Mathews stared in confusion, turning to Mrs. Mathews. Mrs. Mathews shrugged.
"Do you not like Lions?" he asked. Damien bit his lip.
"No, I hate them." It sounded like he wanted to cry. Mr. Mathews stared at him, and moved his hand around his mouth.
"So, Damien. Hows about you tell us how you've lost your arm?" Mr. Mathews asked, still staring. Everyone paused in shock. Damien raised his head, and glared at Mr. Mathews in disgust. Damien punched the table and stood up.
"Hows about it's none of your damn business! It's no ones business!" He took off to his room, crying. Mrs. Mathews dropped Mr. Mathew's plate on the table.
"Smooth Ronny," she said, chasing after him. She got to his door, and knocked.
"Go away," Damien cried. His voice was muffled, as though he'd buried his face into a pillow, and she could tell he was crying. Mrs. Mathews opened the door, and sat next to him.
"I'm so sorry that Dr. Mathews asked that. He has a bad way of testing people- even children."
"Go away."
"You don't want to eat?"
"No."
"Ok, well, if you get hungry later, help yourself to anything. Also, any idea when you want to start school? It's fine if you want to wait, you can go whenever."
"I'll go tomorrow. Please leave me alone."
"Alright," she said, getting up. "Good night," she said, closing the door. For a 3rd time that day, Damien cried himself to sleep.
Damien later woke up, and looked at the clock. It was late. He heard his stomach rumble, and got up, leaving the room. He went to the kitchen, opening the refrigerator. He wanted cereal, for some reason. He fixed it, and then sat down at the table, eating it. He glanced in front of him, to see the lion. He bawled his fist, wanting to cry. He had cried way to much today, however, and he felt as though if he'd cried anymore he'd feel like a bitch. The entire day felt almost as bad as the day he'd lost his arm. Almost. He missed his old family, and didn't understand why he had to have a new one.
