Chapter 1:

Please let me die again!

I Can't Die- Without Saving A Heroine

"Hideki, You're so cool."
"Hideki, Can I have your number?"
"I really like you Hideki, Wanna go out with me?"
Phrases he had come to know all too well. His face was perfect, His body was perfect. He saw himself as better than everyone else. He was extremely vain.

He took one step out of his apartment and realized that he was screwed. A guy from school was standing below on the street taking a picture of him. He had told everybody that he lived in a really big house when the truth was that he lived in a small, cheap apartment with his single mother.

"Crap." He muttered and immediately shot down the stairs to chase the boy. If word got out that he was a liar his reputation would most certainly be nuked. The boy chuckled as he ran down the street, still taking pictures of Hideki's angry face while running. None of the boys at their school liked him. They were all jealous of Hideki's popularity, at least that was what he thought. The boy stuck out his tongue and crossed the street.

Hideki was almost across the street when he felt a jab on his left side. He fell to the ground as something moved above him. He had hit his head pretty hard. His vision was going blurry. He raised his shaking hand and saw it covered in blood. A pool of red was accumulating around him. He could barely hear anything anymore. Just screaming. People were rushing around him, trying to save his life.

* * *

Everything around him was white. There was no sign of anybody. He slowly got up and looked at his hand. There was no pain and no blood. "Am I dead?" He wondered. He seemed to be standing on clouds, which made him worry that he might fall though.

"Of course you're dead, fool." Somebody said from behind him. A blonde haired guy with blue eyes and an undeniably attractive face. It was none other than himself. "Just look at yourself. Showing up to the afterlife in a suit. Seriously?" His identical self scoffed.

"You're wearing the same thing as me. Don't get cocky jerk!" He defended himself. He wondered if this version of himself was an illusion or possibly himself from the future.

"You died an idiotic death, trying to protect your reputation. In the end your life amounted to..." His identical self got out a calculator and pressed some buttons in deep thought. "Nothing." He grinned a bit after seeing the shocked look on Hideki's face.

"What do you mean Nothing! I had a great life with plenty of meaning. People loved me, that's all the proof I need." His identical self shook his head disapprovingly.

"I can tell that there won't be any way to reason with you. I can give you two options Hideki. Either die permanently and have your soul erased from existence or start a new life in another world."

Hideki thought for a moment. Was it a trick? Obviously he didn't want his soul destroyed, he was far too valuable. However, the offer of starting over in a new world seemed too good to be true. Would there be cute girls there? He came to the conclusion that even if it was a trick starting over again was far better than dying permanently.

"I chose the second option." He said a bit hesitantly.

"Good. I can't promise you'll have a good time there though." And with that Hideki was sent to a new world.

* * *

He almost didn't believe it. He was standing in the middle of a busy sidewalk. Giant mansion-like buildings stood along the streets. There were hundreds- Thousands of people swarming around. The streets were filled with cars and fancy vehicles.

"Get out of the way buddy." Someone shoved him aside. He hit the wall and clutched his arm in pain.

"What the heck?" He watched the people pass him in streams. They looked just like normal humans from his own world except they had much brighter hair and dressed strangely. He sunk down the wall and sat on the floor with his head on his knees. "Man this is a big loss. Where am I supposed to go when I want people to tell me how good I look?" He groaned.

He felt a sinking feeling in his stomach when he realized he would never see his mother again. Sure her cooking wasn't very good, she made him do way more chores than he deserved, and she never cleaned after herself, but she was still his mother.

He spotted a cute girl who had just passed him and he leaped up, weaving through the thick crowd to catch up to her. "Hey! You!" He called out to her. She had dark purple hair just below her shoulders and a nice body. She was carrying a paper bag. "You with the purple hair!" He called again. She turned with confusion.

"Are you talking to me?" She asked, pointing to herself. He nodded. "Do I know you?" She asked.

"No no. I just thought you might want some help carrying that bag." He said, using all of the charming skills he had learned. He knew girls couldn't resist a gentleman.

"Why would I need help? Can't you see that I'm doing just fine on my own. Although I guess you might be blind since you look like your grandmother dressed you." She sneered. She walked away without bothering to listen to his reply. Hideki stood there, mouth wide, wondering what he had done wrong. He began to recall the moments leading up to that encounter.

"I called for her, I was friendly, I asked her if she needed help, So what did I do wrong?" He was slowly becoming more and more confused. He was pushed aside for the second time and decided that the sidewalk was not the safest place to be. Hideki slipped into the door of one of the buildings and found himself in a large reception room. He walked up to the desk and decided he would ask for some advice. The girl at the reception was fairly cute, so he didn't mind the interaction.

"So I'm new to this place and I was wondering if you had a map of some sort, or at least directions to where I could find one." He said, leaning on the desk and getting close to her so he would look as attractive as possible. She looked up from the computer she had been typing on and gave him a look of annoyance.

"Sir, this is a rehab center. No we don't have maps of the town." She said getting straight to the point. His posture sank and he found himself wallowing on top of the desk.

"Don't you know any place I can find directions?" He asked, looking at her pleadingly. She frowned at him with dull eyes.

"I am simply a receptionist. Ask somebody else." Then she continued her work.

"What's the problem with these people. Don't they have any manners?" He said to himself while he looked around the room, trying to find another person to ask for help. There was a guy standing in the corner but he looked a little tipsy. A tall woman stepped into the room and looked around. She walked up to the receptionist and asked her a question about a patient.

"Hey there." Hideki said, tapping her on the shoulder. She swung around and slapped his face. "Ouch, What was that for!" He stepped back and put a hand over his hurt cheek.

"I thought you were trying to attack me. Don't startle people like that." She said sternly.

"I was just trying to ask a question. You don't have to get on the defense before you've even seen me." He smiled the smile he always used to charm girls. She didn't seem to be very into it. "What's the problem?" He asked.

"You're just so dorky. You seem to be trying to act attractive but you really just look like a fool, I almost feel bad for you." She chuckled and then went back to her work in another room. Hideki felt terrible. He sat down on a bench in front of the reception desk and sighed.

"Either I have the worst luck or this world is purposely trying to torture me." He said "I've never been rejected by so many girls in one day. It's unbelievable, right?"

"Totally." The receptionist answered without stopping her work.

"And it's just so unfair. Only an hour ago I was getting ready to go to school, the place where girls would die to even just hold my hand." He was being a bit over dramatic. The receptionist agreed with his story as he ranted on and on, confessing his deepest insecurities to her. "Well. Thank you for listening to my story, I think I'll head out now." He said before he left the rehab center.

Stepping back out onto the busy street he had a sudden thought. If life in this new world wasn't going to work out, couldn't he just...die again? It seemed like a stupid idea. The thought of giving up your second chance was definitely idiotic but Hideki wasn't thinking straight at the time. He searched around the city for a bit until he found a bridge which was high off the ground.

"Perfect!" He stepped onto the ledge and took a deep breath. "Goodbye perfect looks, Goodbye memories, Goodbye second chance." He said with courage and then stepped off the ledge and immediately felt dread sinking into his heart. The feeling of falling was scary! His body hit the water and for a second he felt light headed, but the feeling went away quickly. He was surprised that he was still conscious after the huge fall. He looked down at his body and saw no blood or injuries. "What?" He was a bit disappointed.

Hideki heard a voice in his head which sounded like himself. "Sorry I didn't tell you, but you can't die unless you save a heroine. The moment you save one you'll die, so if you want to end it so badly that's all you have to do."

"Wait what?! I wish I had known that earlier. This makes it so easy." He said with relief. At least there was still a way he could die and he wasn't somehow immortal in this world. "Though, I guess none of the girls in this world like me. So I might find trouble saving any of them."

He got out of the water, suddenly feeling like a loser and looked around. There were plenty of girls around but they weren't exactly what he would consider a "heroine". Nothing about them seemed to stick out. A lot of the women in this part of the city were old.

As he was looking around he felt something bump into his back. "I'm so sorry." A cute voice said. It sounded angelic. He turned to see a girl his age who had light green hair with white streaks in it. Her bangs covered her eyes a bit so he brushed them out of the way. "W-what are you doing?" She asked, flustered.

He was in awe. Her eyes were by far the prettiest things he had ever seen in his life. They twinkled like a collection of crystals. They were a mix of blue and purple, somehow blending perfectly. Her eyelashes were dark and made her eyes look wide and utterly adorable. He let out a breath of amazement.

She gently moved his hand off of her forehead and smiled awkwardly. Everything about her seemed precious and kind, like if you weren't gentle with her she would instantly shatter. She was shorter than him but not short enough to be considered small. "Sorry." He said, not even being able to find the courage to flirt with her. For the first time in his life he found himself to be speechless.

"Um- Have a good day." She said and ran off. He reached out his hand trying to catch her before she left but he was too late. That's when Hideki came to a realization.

"That is the heroine I'm going to save. She's going to be the last thing I see before I die, It can only be her." Somehow going against everything he had ever believed in and telling himself not to hit on other girls, he was on a new quest: Save that heroine!
