Chapter 6:

The Gate

After his meal, Ben left the kitchen and found himself back in the hallway. It was a really strange hallway. What should he do now? Claudia had told him he could do anything he wanted as long as he didn't leave the house. But what could he do?

He didn't seem to have many options. And where exactly was he now anyway? How would he find his way back to his room? Maybe the house would help him again.
"Uh house? How exactly do I get back to my room?"His voice echoed through the hallway but the white walls remained silent. Ben even thought he heard a soft chuckle. Was the house laughing at him right now? No it wasn't.Ben turned around. Just a few feet away, a girl stood doing her best to suppress a laugh. She had medium-length black hair, chestnut eyes, and a narrow mouth. She was the kind of girl the boys in Ben's old orphanage would fight over. She was incredibly pretty and radiated an innocence that rivaled that of a small child. Like Ben, she wore a simple gray shirt, but unlike him, she wore a matching skirt.

Ben looked down in embarrassment. Of course, she of all people must have overheard him talking to the house. The girl must have noticed the look, because she stopped laughing and became quiet.
"E-excuse me I didn't mean to make fun of you." She spoke softly and uncertainly. "It's okay." Ben said quickly. This was his chance. "Say, why isn't the house answering me?""Th-The house can't hear you." She said a little confused. Noticing his look, she added:"It's enough i-if you just think of where you'd like to go while touching a wall."

Expectantly, she rocked back and forth on her toes.Ben put his hand on the wall of the white hallway. How do I get to my room?
Before his eyes, Ben suddenly saw himself rushing down the hallway. Exactly 33 doors shot past him, then he stopped abruptly in front of a door that lit up brightly. Then it was over, the image in his mind's eye went out and Ben was back in the hallway with the girl. He realized that he had been holding his breath the whole time. Gasping, he leaned against the wall. The girl smiled briefly, lowering her gaze to the floor. Ben hesitated for a moment."What's your name?"
"Amare.", she kept her gaze fixed on the floor and turned to leave.
"Amare?" when he said her name, she lifted her head properly for the first time and looked into his eyes. She had such beautiful eyes. Inscrutable and infinite, they gleamed at him.
"Thank you." He said sincerely. She avoided his gaze and only nodded briefly. Then she walked quickly past him. The air smelled like a garden full of flowers as she walked past him.

Food when I'm hungry, a comfortable bed when I'm tired, no chores and Amare.

He could get used to that.
