Chapter 2:

Detective Night Works I

Horror and thriller anthology's/Oneshots

Today is like any other night, cold. Driving to the crime scene, I saw many police forces putting up crime tape. I stopped before those tapes and walked out only to see the chief who called me earlier to this police investigation. I nodded at him as he headed on my way. The chief and I go way back when I just started in this joint. As such, he shook my hand and started to talk a simple conservation with me.

"Glad you could make it, detective."

"Of course, I will have time for one of my first customers, Cheif Howard."

I gladly input. After all, he was my first customer who put me where I was at today. Hell, I could say that the other chiefs wouldn't have hired me without him taking his chances on me with his other cases. So we continue walking to the crime scene while talking about how our life has been since the last time we saw each other. Until I decided to bring up the case I'm dealing with.

"So, Howard, what are we dealing with anyway."

"Easily put it, a serial killer and a real twister motherfucker at that."

I looked at him with a baffled look. We continued walking as silence was presented to us, and all the noise I could hear was the sirens of the other cop cars until we made it to the main scene, in which I could now see why Howard brought up how twisted the killer was.

In front of me was a male that looked between his mid-twenty and early-thirty. I could presume his height of any average joe 5'9 inch, and his hair is black and clean-cut. His body, or more precisely his chest cavity, was broken open to or carved into a perfect circle and had his heart pulled out, but from there is, his reproductive organ was either chewed or ripped, which made me cringe a little.

"Damn, I could see why you said this killer is sick in the head."

"Ya, but that's not the only thing that stumped on us, detective."

"What do you mean?"

"His heart...the color was not normal. It was black."

I was confused about what he meant until he took me to the back of the ambulance. There I see what he's talking about, the man's heart, tainted in black. I thought it was either the heart was cooked or sprayed-painted black. But looking back at Howard, he shooked his head side to side. I took out a notepad and faced Howard.

"I see what you mean, Howard. Any leads I could have to start up this case?"

"The only clues with have is all the target has been the same type of males."

"Damn, this going be a hard case to crack."

This made me think about what to do since all the clues we have is victims are males, and the hearts are black—staring at the heart made of black, thinking of what I should do. Then, making me nod, I knew what to do and looked back at Howard.

"Howard, one more question where is the place these crimes happen, or at least what's near them?"

Seeing him put his hand on his chin, thinking what's the most place he visits of these crimes. I'm just hoping he remembers which is near, or else this will be almost impossible to solve. He took his hand off his chin and slammed it into his other hand, looking like he had his resolve.

"Ah, yes, near Cinnamon Street and Resonate Road."

"Wait, if it is near those roads, isn't there a fast-food joint in that area."

"Ah, yes, it's called Jack Joey's Burgers."

Perfect, a place to start. From here, I could ask the chief about any other information on the other victims. Howard agreed to it and told me about the other victims in which, so far, the thing they did have in common was going out to have fun around seven at night. So this does conclude that it has to do with that burger place, or else these bodies won't be here as we speak. I wrote everything necessary on my notepad to keep a tab.

Notes

-7pm

-Victims' mid-20s-early 30s males with short black hair

- around Jack Joey Burgers

After writing everything, I needed, Howard and I started to walk out of the ambulance. As we reached outside, we stopped and looked at each other, and Howard pulled his hand out.

"Thanks for helping us out, detective."

"Called me Jacob."

"That's the name, huh?"

"You know me; I'm not good with formality."

He just laughed, knowing damn well how I work. I took his hand and shooked it as we went our separate ways. Now my next stop is that burger joint. The only thing I hope is I can find this killer before it's too late.

Author here, so this story is going to be longer than I thought... First, I was hoping to make it a one-shot, but it didn't look good. Then I decided to make it to a two-chapter, but again I couldn't, so most likely, at least this story is going to be three or four chapters long. Then, of course, going be separated by other stories. Also, sorry that this chapter is slow to building up what our protagonist here will be facing. I promise that the next chapter of this story is going to be more of a thriller.
