Chapter 6:

Operation Field Trip

I'm gonna confess first!

Do you know that murderous intent when you’re having your day-off and can sleep as much as you like, BUT SOMEONE DECIDES TO COME KNOCKING AT YOUR DOOR AT 7 AM? And what’s worse, is that your busy parents have already left for work and you are forced to be the one to open the door!

I hated it when I woke up with irritation, it usually ruined the rest of my day. I was sleeping so soundly and deeply that the person had to keep ringing the bell persistently in order for me to finally shoot up in a state between sleep and being awake.

Everything was a blur. I couldn’t open my eyes, my lashes were stuck together. I barely managed to squint like some four-eyes who had lost his glasses and was looking for them. My body was heavy as lead and disobedient like a child when I tried to make it stand up. Everytime I almost got up, I was pulled back down by some weird and unknown force emitting from my soft bed. The bell kept ringing, getting on my nerves and rushing me even more.

I’m trying, okay?!

“Comin’!” I tried to shout in an effort to show them that if they were a bit more patient, I would be over there in mere seconds. The only thing I asked in return was for the freaking bell to stop ringing! I’m not sure that whoever was outside managed to hear or understand me, though. My throat was dry from sleep and my voice had come out hoarse and incomprehensible. It had sounded similar to the growl I wanted to say in reality. If they were so impatient, why didn’t they give up so that I could go back to my bed and fall asleep once again as its cool sheets embraced my body-

I jumped up trying to keep my balance. The more I thought about it, the heavier my body got and without realizing it, I had started leaning towards my pillow. Unfortunately, my centre of balance was a little messed up at the moment so even if I managed to stand straight, it wasn’t long before I fell back down.

“Aaah!” I moved my hands and arms in frustration like a turtle who had fallen on its shell and couldn’t get back up. After I got it out of my system, I took a breath and tried to calm down. I rubbed my eyes managing to make them open a little more and I finally convinced myself to get up.

I sloppily wore my flip-flops not noticing that they were put on the wrong foot and stumbled upon myself as I made my way to the door.

“I’m here, I’m here” I said, not sure if the person had actually given up after all the time I had made them wait. I couldn’t exactly blame them but I would still be a little irritated if they left after I managed to shake off my sleepiness and got to the door.

I opened it nonetheless leaning a bit too much to it. The first thing I noticed were black trousers that looked awfully familiar. My head was all fuzzy, though, so I didn’t connect the dots until I heard his voice.

“Good morning, Friend-chan!” My body flinched and I swore under my breath.

“You have to be kidding me” I murmured, not believing my own ears until I looked up and met that wide smile and rose gold hair. I kept staring at him for some moments and he didn’t say anything, only smiling like an idiot. I ran my hand through my face and took a breath to fill my lungs for what was going to follow. “DO YOU REALLY THINK YOU’RE THE FIRST THING I WANT TO SEE IN THE MORNING? ON MY DAY-OFF? JUST HOW MUCH DO YOU HATE ME?”

He flinched some steps back and looked at me with wide open eyes as I let out all the air in my system, getting a bit of a heavy breath in the end as I had tried to say it all in one go. My small body was moving frantically up and down in an effort to get back the oxygen it lost. My eyes were gleaming with a slightly less intense murderous look and they looked straight to his.

“You really needed that out of your system, didn’t you? How long have you been keeping it in?” Even though he was talking seriously, the corners of his lips were curling in a teasing way.

“You have no idea” Was the only thing I replied before letting out another breath and finally calming down. “You know, you should sleep with one eye open after this” His smile widened a bit but when he realized how serious I was about the threat, it started fading. It looked like one part of him liked the challenge while the other was afraid of it. I didn’t care about either parts, I was going to take my revenge. It was going to be perfectly planned and satisfying. My eyes glistened in the mere thought of it.

“You’re scaring me” He said but I ignored him.

“How did you find where I live? And what exactly are you doing here in the first place?” I sighed defeatedly thinking about how there was no way I could fall back to sleep after getting so worked up. There goes my precious day-off.

He straightened up and put his hand over his heart as if he was about to start singing the national hymn.

“I came to meet your parents and tell them that I have a serious relationship with their daught-ow ow ow!” He might be taller than me but the irritation he caused me could overcome any distance and difficulty. I kept pulling on his ear waiting for him to give me an honest and logical explanation.

“I don’t know why I expected a serious answer…” I sighed once again and he crossed his arms a bit offended by my expression. Could he blame me?

“If you have to know, I’m merely the distraction” He confessed and I nodded before I shot back up and my eyes widened.

“Distraction for what?” I didn’t have a good feeling about this. He was a pain in the ass alone, I couldn’t begin to imagine what he could do with accomplishes! And why did he have to distract me? Was I part of the plan?

“You’re gonna cut off my ear you know! Let me go and I’ll tell you!” This time he wasn’t trying to be dramatic, there was real strain and pain in his voice. I blinked, turning my attention from my thoughts back to him and realizing that in my panic I kept gripping onto his ear making it look red. I quickly let go.

“Sorry”

“It’s no problem. But before you assume anything horrible about me, I’m with Matsuda in this.” He started explaining. That sounded even more fishy than before. I looked at him doubtfully. He reacted as if he expected that from the beginning. “I have proof” He continued and pointed to a direction in the street in front of our house. I squinted. It was hard to discern at first but when I recognized the people that were talking, I almost started running over there to stop whatever was going on.

My parents should have already left for work but there they were speaking with the only friend I ever had apart from that dunderhead that was standing next to me right now. I was sure that whatever Matsuda was doing, she thought she was doing it for me but my parents weren’t ones to simply accept anything by someone younger than them. She was going to get in trouble.

“Woah there, Friend-chan!” His arms stopped me, holding me around my waist and keeping me from going over there.

“Let me go! I have to stop her!” I fought a little but stopped because I felt ridiculous.

“No. You said it yourself. They think you don’t have any friends so they won’t let you go on the field trip. She is trying to convince them otherwise”

He remembered that? How did Matsuda-? He was the only one who knew. Then, everything clicked. He had helped me so many times but I still kept giving him the short end of the stick.

“But-” I tried to complain for the sake of complaining.

“Have some more faith in your friend.” He encouraged me and I looked over there. Matsuda kept moving her hands in nervousness but her expression was determined. I smiled softly and my muscles calmed down leaving my full weight on his arms. “Don’t relax just yet! We are going shopping!”

“Where did that come from?” I looked at him as if he was crazy, which he honestly seemed to be most of the time,

“Why did you think I woke you up? We need to go get everything you will need for the field trip! It’s in a few days! We need to hurry!” His confidence in this made me want to hope even more.

“You’re so sure it’s gonna work?”

“Well, not exactly sure. Just, if she fails, they are going to consider it again if you have already spent lots of money on things for it!” His logic was a bit twisted but I smiled back at him. “Though…” I didn’t like that. It started making my fragile confidence deflate. “You better change into something better before we go. Not that I mind it”

I blinked a couple of times before becoming awfully aware of my appearance. My black hair was like a nest above my head, the corner of my mouth had dried drool on it and my breath must have smelled disgusting. I won’t even mention my childish and almost see-through pajamas.

“You, you, you, you pervert! Why didn’t you say something sooner?!” I shouted trying to cover my body.

“I thought you knew” He lifted his hands in surrender but I could see his eyes glinting with amusement. “They are cute by the way” He motioned to my pajamas with the bunnies and the unicorns. My face turned a new shade of red.

“Shut up!” I screamed and rushed inside to get reay. I couldn’t believe him! The one moment he did something good and decent and the other…Aaah!

And what was I supposed to wear? Where were we going exactly? I hoped my parents would be too preoccupied with Matsuda to see me leave the house with a boy. And not just any boy! If they met him, it was going to be a disaster! He was definitely going to call himself my “special friend” and wiggle his eyebrows or something. Then, I would be grounded for the rest of my life and I wouldn’t be given permission to go out ever again!

Now that I think about it, that option never bothered me before. It was even favorable to my lonely tendences. Then why, why did I get so afraid and rebellious in the thought of never going out again?

I peeked outside the door of my room and looked over to him who was standing outside since I hadn’t invited him in. He had his hands on his pockets and whistled joyfully as he looked at the sky. The sun was adornishing his features. I felt warm and smiled to myself while hugging one of my t-shirts to my chest.

I knew fucking well the reason why I was afraid. The major one was waiting for me by my house’s door and the other was talking to my parents down the road.
