Chapter 4:

Sweets Addiction

Red Velvet Love

“The world works in mysterious ways.”

“It really does.”

Tamura and I were talking a bit of a distance away.

To our surprise, the two we had crossed paths with were Shizuku and Haruka. According to Shizuku, Haruka was telling her she wanted to apologize for the misunderstanding last time. As luck would have it, that’s when we appeared. Shizuku thought it was the perfect chance, so she invited us to tag along with them. Since we were planning to just wing it anyway, we had no complaints.

“I guess perfect timing really does exist.”

“You have the strangest luck as always Yuuki.”

“Ha, tell me about it.”

I gave a dry laugh to Tamura’s remark, still in disbelief of the situation.

It really was strange to meet them again so soon. It’s not like I was never expecting it, but before yesterday I had never seen them. Now suddenly it has happened two days in a row. No matter what anyone says, this is very strange. Though I suppose stranger things have happened.

Before long, we arrived at one of the newly opened locations in town. A sweets café. Although new, it has gotten loads of positive reviews already. I guess it’s no surprise that they would choose a place like this. I also have no complaints about coming here either. In fact, I have been meaning to try it out myself.

“Let’s go in already. I can’t wait!”

Shizuku said excitedly.

As expected, she was looking forward to it. However, she wasn’t the only one. As a sweet’s lover, I’m as excited as her. Maybe even a bit more if I’m honest.

“Welcome.”

As we walked inside, a waitress greeted us and showed us to a table shortly after. Once we sat down, she handed all of us menus to order from. Unsure of what to order, I decided to go with some of my usual choices.

“I’ll have the chocolate cake with a white chocolate mocha.”

I couldn’t help but to get this combination. Anything with chocolate was really a must. Even if it was chocolate with chocolate and more chocolate. The fact of the matter was, I had come to love chocolate as much as mom did. It was thanks to her that I had tried so many different types. The one thing I can say I didn’t take away from her was her second love, coffee. I just couldn’t handle the taste of coffee no matter what. I actually preferred having hot chocolate when it came to having a hot drink of choice.

That slightly changed though when I was introduced to a white chocolate mocha. It was then that I could understand why people enjoyed coffee to such a degree. It just pepped you up like nothing else could. So now whenever a place doesn’t have hot chocolate, or on the off chance I don’t want a chocolate overdose. I would get a white chocolate mocha to drink instead. Something about its mix just matched up perfectly. It’s not very sweet and actually has a taste that allows me to enjoy more sweets instead. In my opinion though, you can never have too much chocolate. Otherwise, why else would I come to like a coffee that has the taste of chocolate in it?

“I’ll have an iced tea and strawberry shortcake.”

“I suppose I’ll have the same.”

“Hmm, what do you think I should get Yuuki? I don’t usually get sweets, so it’s hard to decide.”

“Just get whatever you…”

It was then that it hit me.

“Get the chocolate parfait.”

I said immediately after my pause.

Yes, if I have him get another chocolate item. I could then try not one, but two chocolate items! I’m sure he wouldn’t mind sharing with me. That’s what friends do after all.

“I see, then I’ll get that. One chocolate parfait please!”

After Tamura said that, I smiled with pride as a chocolate enthusiast.

My love for chocolate cannot be contained. It will always try to find a way to try more chocolate. As I was in my own world, I eventually noticed Haruka staring at me.

“I’m sorry.”

“…Huh?”

I was a bit caught off guard after having my chocolate day dream, so it didn’t really register immediately what she had meant by that.

“Sorry about calling you a stalker.”

“Ah~, so that’s what you meant. It’s okay, it was a misunderstanding after all. We also quickly cleared it up as well. No harm done.”

“Even so, I feel bad after a serious mistake like that. Again, I’m sorry. I apologize for causing a scene like that.”

I guess she’s more earnest than I had expected.

“I accept your apology then. Although I can’t really be mad after already getting over it you know? Plus, I’m currently in sweets heaven. What more could I ask for right now?”

“Good for you Haruka!”

Shizuku said with a big smile.

Haruka smiled, nodding to acknowledge that she understood I had completely forgiven her.

“You’re a strange one.”

“Really? I think I’m pretty normal if you ask me. Right Tamura?”

“Normal huh? Are you now? Ha ha.”

“Hey! What’s that supposed to mean!?”

Tamura laughed at my reaction. Teasing me in a manner that he had always done. In that time, our sweets had finally made its way out. The waitress came back, serving each of us our order.

“Enjoy!”

The caked laid out before me was just a chocolatey masterpiece. I was already drooling at the thought of getting to savor each bite. However, I had one thing to do before that. I took a look over at Tamura’s parfait. Just as I thought, it looks just as delectable. Well, it is chocolate after all. How could it not be tasty? Without a second thought in my mind, I took a spoonful for myself and ate it.

“AH~! My parfait!”

“Hmm~~! It’s so good~!”

In an instant the sweetness hit my mouth. Unlike like a normal person, I had an insane sweet tooth. That meant that whenever I ate sweets, I would experience a crazy tingle that would spread throughout my body. It always starts from a very particular tooth and would then spread out quickly from there. It was like a shockwave of pure joy and pleasure. That caused me to have a craving for even more sweets. Ever since I was young, sweets were my addiction thanks to this tooth of mine. The feeling I got from it was something so inexplainable, that you would have to experience it to truly understand it. No words could ever truly tell the truth.

After seeing my face, Tamura changed his tune pretty quickly.

“I should have known when you told me to get a chocolate parfait. Your desire for sweets really is something.”

“That’s true, you’ve known me for far too long to make that type of mistake. You have only yourself to blame for that one.”

I smiled as I took a bite of my cake this time.

“So delicious~! Do you think I could eat like this every day Tamura? How amazing would that be?”

“Only you would probably be able to handle that many sweets. Honestly, you sure that tooth of yours isn’t the abnormal thing around here. How does it even work?”

“That’s a good question, I honestly have no clue myself.”

I had always wondered why it was a certain tooth that would cause this reaction. Unlike the actual saying that people used to describe a person who liked sweets, I really had a sweet tooth. One that would react to sweets of any kind and differently to the amount of sweetness it had. It’s a mystery really, but it’s thanks to it that I get to experience ten times the joy from eating anything sweet. Possibly even more than that.

“Oh, maybe I’m a rare breed of human that developed to enjoy the wonders of sweets to the highest degree possible?”

“What even is that? Are you saying you’re an evolved human now?”

Tamura couldn’t help but laugh at such a crazy thought.

Even I thought it was funny. It was hard to contain my laugher, after just taking a bite of cake. It was such a weird combination, laughter and the happiness coming from enjoying sweets.

We continued chatting with one another as we enjoyed our time at the café. Eventually, I couldn’t help but to get another cake. This time I tried out their specialty, a red velvet cake. I had never tried a cake such as this before, so it was interesting to get something new. To my surprise, I could taste chocolate. I would have never expected to taste chocolate in something with a reddish color as this. I could see why they had made it their specialty. It really stood out and anything with chocolate can never go wrong in my book.

After enjoying my fill of sweets, I drank my mocha in satisfaction. The day couldn’t get any better than this. Not long after finishing up the cake, it was time to pay the bill. However, before I could make a move Haruka had spoken.

“It’s my treat. It’s the least I can do for you.”

It seems Haruka had already planned to pay my tab as a way to apology. She felt it wasn’t enough to just say it, she also wanted to express it another way alongside it. Without knowing, she even picked the best place to treat me.

“Are you sure? I ordered more than everyone else, plus I did get their specialty too.”

“No need to worry. It’s better that you enjoyed yourself instead of holding back on my account.”

“I see, then I’ll take you up on your offer this time.”

Once everything was settled, Shizuku thought it would be a shame to just separate after we both had just made up. It was hard to disagree with her after being treated at the café just now. So, we stuck together a bit longer and all hung out around town. We went around to varies types of stores and even bought a few things that caught our eye.

Before I knew it, time had flown by. The sun was starting to set and this random encounter had turned into a fun time.

“That was fun~.”

Shizuku had a satisfied face as she spoke.

“We should definitely do this again some time. Don’t you think so too Haruaka?”

“I suppose it wasn’t so bad.”

“Then first thing first, let’s exchange numbers!”

Shizuku pulled out her phone, waiting to receive our numbers.

“Sure, why not! Come on now, you too Yuuki.”

Tamura was grinning from ear to ear, grabbing his phone out pretty quick.

“Haa~. You sure you’re not just excited to get a girl’s number Tamura?”

“Eh~. That’s not the only reason.”

We all began exchanging numbers and saved each other in our contacts. I now had two new numbers in my phone. In fact, we all did at this point. I couldn’t help but remember Tamura’s words from earlier. The world works in mysterious ways and right now I couldn’t agree more. I’d never have guessed this would have happened, even if you told me beforehand.

“It’s time to go Shizuku.”

“Ah, that’s right. Well, until next time you two!”

As she said that, she waved goodbye.

We said our goodbyes and waved back to both of them. Once they vanished out of view, we also headed off. Sticking together as far as we could, until eventually splitting ways as well. I now found myself alone, with only the memories of the day to keep me occupied. I couldn’t have asked for a more enjoyable day.
