Chapter 2:

Chapter 2

Habiki is late for school

Minato was jerked awake from her day dream by the the school bell which was immediately followed by the rest of the class eagerly jumping up and packing their equipment away. At this point the geography teacher desperately attempted to impose his authority with the classic "The bell doesn't dismiss you, I dismiss you." He quickly realised that his efforts would not achieve anything and he isn't paid enough to waste effort. But more importantly it was Lunch break and he needed to take advantage of his teacher's authority to ensure he got one of the limited steak sandwiches being sold in the canteen. With that he was the first one out of the classroom.

Minato hurriedly packed her things and left the classroom after Habiki. She was determined to make today the day that she asked to eat lunch with him. As she followed him from a comfortable distance she contemplated all that she knew about Habiki. Whilst they hadn't really spoken before, she new an awful lot about him but she is adamant she isn't a stalker. Firstly, Habiki lives completely by himself and as far as she is aware doesn't have any close family. Unfortunately, Minato isn't sure why this is the case or if he actually has any family left at all. Secondly, as far as she is aware, Habiki only has one friend. He is also in their class and they have been friends since middle school. Again, she has never spoken to him other than generic greetings and passings. Thirdly, Habiki is super cool. Like really cool. After watching him for so long, she has never once witnessed him make a mistake. He always seems to know exactly what is going on and the perfect course of action to take to get around it. He is perfection...

Habiki had stopped in front of a vending machine. Minato quickly darted behind the corner she had just walked around. She had been too engrossed with thought of Habiki that she hadn't noticed him stop. She hoped he hadn't seen her before she was able to hide. But this situation was perfect, Habiki was alone and stationary. All she had to do was go up to him and ask if he wanted to hang out. She could do this.

"It's easy, the worst he could say is no." she told herself. "But then again that's pretty bad. If he says no then he must really hate me. The worse case scenario is too bad. But then again Habiki is too nice to do that. He would probably come up with some excuse to avoid hurting my feeling. Wait. That means if he rejects her in any way even with a good excuse means he doesn't like her at all he is being polite. The risk is too great."

Whilst Minato was having her internal conflict, Habiki had already bought himself his drink. He looks over his shoulder to the corner where Minato is hiding. He smiles to himself before turning and walking away.

"That's it", Minato told herself, "I am going to ask him to have lunch with me". With a new wave of confidence, she turns around to see that Habiki is no longer stood by the vending machine. Minato deflated with all her confidence leaking out of her. Minato slowly shuffled along the corridors once again searching for Habiki in the hope that she can regain her wasted confidence.
