Chapter 1:

Pitch Black

Life After Death

‘Bang!’ That’s all I remember of what I believe to be my last moments. Not to sure what made the noise, or where it even came from. All I remember is that I had or have a family.

I sat there trying my hardest to recall any memories. Hoping something would surface. Anything would be useful.

I opened my eyes or so I thought but nothing was seen just pitch black. I blinked just incase to make sure they were open. After trying to see somthing for a while I went back to trying to remember things.

A wife and three sons. That’s all I remember. No names. No birthdays. Not even there faces.

I also remembered that I was a mechanic. I worked on big trucks, but no specific brands or names were coming to mind.

“Am I dead?” I asked myself. “If i’m not dead is it a coma? Was I injured? What was that bang? Was it a car accident? Was it a gun?” So many questions filled my mind.

I started to feel around my character for anything. I found what felt like a box, so I reached in my Jean pockets and pulled it out.

“What’s this?” I wondered trying to squint hoping to see somthing. Fiddling around with the little box in my hands I went back trying to remember things.

“I can’t remember anything”, I said out loud still fiddling with the box I found. I could hear my voice echo for what seemed like forever.

“So does that mean i’m in a cave? Or a empty building? Am I blind and I just hit my head or somthing?” I questioned my self.

“Wait am I standing on anything?” I just realized that idk if i’m laying, sitting, standing, anything else.

I made a motion to I guess jump. “It felt like my body moved up and down”, I mumbled to myself. “So I am standing on something, I think.”

“Establishing Everything I have figured out at this point. For one i’m standing, for two I have little to no memory of anything, and three I have some random box I have still test to figure out what’s in it.” I mumbled to my self

Thinking about all three of those key points I set my focus on the box for now, since there wasn’t anything I could do about the other two factors.

I rubbed the box with both hands trying to figure out what it was. “Hmmm it feels rectangular. It also feels like there might be some kind of protective layer”, I noticed still trying to squint at it.

I took my finger nail and tried to find a opening in the protective layer. As I scraped along the box I noticed on one side of the box there was a lip almost like a lid lip. I scratched at it with no success.

I started walking unconsciously while I was fiddling with the box. ‘Donk’, “did I just walk into somthing?” I thought to myself.

I blindly moved my empty hand around hoping to find somthing. “I think this is a table”, I mumbled. Nothing on the surface of it, just a weird table in this pitch black area. I started to walk around the table.

‘Thump!’ As I stubbed my toe on somthing. Doing the zombie waddle, while trying to figure out what I hit. “Ermmm”, I grunted in pain just trying to feel anything.

I squatted down after hugging the air for a few minutes. On the ground is what felt like a small chest. “What is thing?” I questioned.

I attempted to pick it, but to my surprise it was really light. “Man it sure didn’t feel like that when stubbed my toe on it”, I sarcastically said. I wobbled back to where I believed the table was.

I put the box I found in my pocket back in my pocket so I didn’t lose it. I felt the small chest trying to see if there was a button to open it, or any distinguishing marks on it. I rolled it over on its back and felt the bottom of it. I felt what I thought was letters.

“P,R,O,P,E,R,T,Y”, I read out loud. “Ok so property”, I quickly put the letters together. “O,F”, I said as I felt for anymore letters on the second line. “Ok so the next line should be the owner of this”, I guessed. “C,E,C”, is what I read off the last line.

Confused I started to rack my brain to try an conjure any memories of someone with the initials of ‘D,A,S’, but nothing came to mind. “Damn I wish I could see”, I said as I let out a long sigh. I felt around the chest a little bit before feeling what felt like a key hole.

I left it be for now an went back to the box in my pocket. “Hmm I wonder”, I mumbled before having the idea to shake the box i’ve been carrying with me for the first time. ‘Cachinck’, the little box made a noise. “Why on earth did I not think to do that before”, I said glumly.

“Ok so now I have a box and a chest. The box seems to have a key to the chest. So does that mean ‘C,E,C’ is me?” I questioned myself, while trying to remember my name.

“But what if it isn’t my name what if it’s the owner of this space, or place, or where ever I am.” I thought, as I started to give myself a headache thinking so much. “Well what ever it is, or whoever it is wants me to open it I guess”. I said creeped out by the fact whoever or whatever could be watching me.

I focused my attention back on the little box trying to get it open. I moved my fingers around once again to see if there any letter on it. I found at the bottom what felt like a small hole. “Hmm maybe this is how it opens”, I thought out loud, as I said that I herd what sounded like a paper clip bounce on the table next to me.

If I could see my arm I would be able to tell that I had physical goose bumps. All my hair stood straight up at the noise. “Who, or what was that!” I said out loud in a panicked voice. Straight silence not even ringing in my ear could be heard. Absolutely nothing but dead black silence.

I felt around the table to try and find the noise I heard. I quietly swept my hand feeling for it trying not to make any noise just in case. I herd what sounded like my hand dragging something, the paper clip from the noise I herd just moments ago.

“Should I even open this? Is something bad going to happen if I do? Who or what was that?” I questioned myself as more and more thoughts entered my mind on my predicament.

I let out a long sigh trying to calm myself down, as I unfolded the paper clip. I slid it in the hole on the bottom of the box and herd a ‘Pop’ sounds come from the top. It had opened. I turned it upside down to slide the thing I thought was a key to the chest in my hand.

A cold metal object landed in my hand it had sharp cuts on it. “I was right this was a key”, I thought to myself. Feeling around the chest I found the key hole. Blindly I start trying to put the small key into the small key hole. I finally got it in after the third or fourth attempt.

A cold sweat could be felt dripping off my forehead afraid of what I might find, as I turned the key to the chest. ‘Clinck’ the sound of unlocking the chest almost echoed.

I started to shake a little bit in nervousness, as I slowly opened the lid to the chest. I felt down inside the chest I found what felt like a cigarette and a box of matches. I took the matches and set to strike one, but stoped. Afraid of what I might see. I decided against it for a second. I put the cigarette up to my mouth and recalled a memory of me smoking.

“I guess I used to smoke before all of this”, I muttered and let out a nervous laugh, as I put the cigarette to my mouth and stuck a match to light it. I lit the cigarette and waited for my eyes to adjust from being in the dark for so long. I looked up to see four people staring at me. All of them sitting around the table I was at, and all of them were creepily smiling at me.

They all had a red number on their left cheek. “What is this!” I wondered out loud, as I stumbled backwards. The person with the red One on there cheek smiled showing his jagged teeth. He opened his mouth, as to say somthing the moment I dropped the match I was holding.
