Chapter 5:

Act 5: Denial

The Last Human

"Now ya owe me a whole house too!" Grumbled Zero while clanking with his claws in front of Silus's nose. "Dammit, because of ya, all my creations build with sweat and blood just went up in flame!" The voice of the small robot echoed through the tunnel.
"You can't sweat as a mechanoid and you don't have blood in you either." Silus patted the dirt from his coat. "And in the end, you can simply create new ones, so what's the matter? More importantly than that, what is the result?"
Together, the three of them were walking through the dark sewage system built underground which hadn't been in use since humanity's extinction.
"Just make new ones he says." Mumbled Zero.
"What did you say?"
"Nothing important."
"Then come to the point. Is she a human or not?!" His voice mixed with the echoing sound of their steps.
"I don't know how I'm gonna explain this to ya... Well, first of all, her body is the real deal. Blood, bones, muscles it's all there..." Zero's mouth stood open but no words were coming out.
"But?"
"The thing is this, I noticed something odd in her brain and to be honest in all those years working with mechanoids, I have never seen such a thing. Imagine this, the capabilities of the AI system and those of a normal human brain merged together into one." A trace of curiosity filled Zero's voice.
"Does that mean I'm sick?" Spes plugged at Silus' coat.
"No, I don't think that's the case, am I right?" He looked down towards Zero.
"I can't say that for sure but for now, there shouldn't be any issues whatsoever. But I can say two things with absolute certainty: First, this wasn't done by central and second...," Zero looked at Silus, "and second that she i-"
Clanking steps could be heard from the direction they just came from which rapidly became louder.
"Looks like some enforcers survived the blast. We should hurry up there should be a junction ahead." Zero said, pushing the others forward. "We should be able to shake them off."
Not long and as their friend had predicted they soon arrived at a fork with two choices, either left where the sewerage water had completely dried out or to the right into the unknown darkness. Both Spes and Silus looked at Zero who screeched with his claw over the rusted metal of his head.
"Whaddya looking like that?! I needed a moment to recall the data okay?! Left is the exit."
"Good, is there another junction ahead of the right path that leads back to the exit?" Asked Silus.
"Yes, there is why?"
"Perfect. You two will go to the right and we'll meet up at the exit"
"What, no why?!" Screamed Spes, her voice resounding from the tunnel's walls. "I don't want to leave you!"
"Don't be ridiculous we are going to meet up at the exit. Without you two my chances of winning against them are much higher so go now. I'll lure them away." The short machinegun in his hand was ready to bring a hail of lead upon the incoming enemy.
"Take care Silus and ya better don't destroy ya'r body again this time!" Zero said his farewell with a punch on Silus' shoulder but not before turning around one last time. "Here, ya'll probably gonna need this." A pair of shoes and some metal parts landed in front of his feet.
Holding the girl on his back, the small robot disappeared into the darkness of the tunnel. Left behind alone, Silus got to work. With the shoes and metal parts, he laid out a false trail, good enough to be recognized as true by the enforcer's scanners.
"Why are you even doing this?" Asked the familiar voice as he laid out the fake traces.
"She gave me hope, the hope that the human race can still prevail, that I didn't fail my mission." He puffed on the cigarette in his mouth.
"But she is no human, Silus! Face reality! Zero said it, she has an AI implemented in her brain."
"Shut up!" The scream bounced back from the end of the tunnel at came right back at him. "She has a human body and she behaves like one!"
"Come on Silus, that's just because her body allows her to sweat, cry and show emotions. That doesn't mean that she feels them! You are just in denial!"
"Enough already!" Zero rammed the shoes and remaining metal parts to the ground. "Get out of here!" With clenched fists, he beat against his head over and over like a bell. "You won't let me kill myself, you always interfere with everything I do and now you even destroy my only hope. Get out of my he-!"
A bullet passed straight through his left shoulder, blasting away the whole arm and shattering components of his body across the tunnel floor. The impact knocked him from his feet, throwing him into the mud.
Four enforcers could be seen in the distance, their normally white and blue appearance covered in black soot from the explosion, some of them even thinking with malfunctioned legs. Being on the ground, Silus rolled around, now facing the incoming enemies head-on with the machinegun pointed at them. Having no space to evade the two mechanoids in the front took most of the hits ending in a firework of sparks and blueish lightning.
To avoid crushing into their companions in the front, the other two enforcers accelerated and started running on the sidewalls, landing right behind him. While holding the finger of his remaining arm on the trigger Silus turned on his back leaving a trail of bullet holes on the walls where one of the enforcers just walked past him.
"Dammit." He cursed. "I could have at least hit one of them."
They stood right above him and his machinegun only clicked when he pressed the trigger. A brief moment passed where the three of them stood still only staring at each other's eyes.
"New order from Central. Don't eliminate. Extract AI card." One of them said with a monotonous voice.
"Come and get it you tinheads, I don't fear death!"
