Chapter 18:

The Adventure Begins (3)

The Worst Hero

Sleeping in that cave was not easy, if I had gone outside to sleep, I would have been able to lie on the soft grass, but because I slept inside the cave, my back ached from the rocky ground.

But I knew that sleeping in that kind of place could help me in the future, not least because Sheele implied that she could rest in any kind of place, and I'm sure this was due to the trips she must have made alone.

The cave was quite dark when I went to sleep, even though I slept right at the entrance of the cave. I worried that the slimes might climb the cave, to come after me, but this did not happen. I first looked for something to eat, because I had been hungry since yesterday, and ended up eating some fruit from the area. Sheele had taught me about some edible fruits, but I could not find the fruits of that forest.

After I ate and drank some water, I prepared myself to venture into that cave of the slimes again. I think it is a good idea to do this early in the morning, because I am sure that this cave is a famous place for training among novice heroes, I saw many heroes yesterday, so I need to hurry.

Yesterday I realized that physical damage doesn't work on slimes, only the use of Nill can take them on. But still, I am not strong enough to defeat them just by putting my Nill in my fist. I barely do any kind of training, not long ago, I didn't even bother to exercise at my grandparents' house.

I had two main alternatives: Either I learn to manipulate the Nill by myself before I go face the slimes, for example, learning to use fire or something like that, I would certainly beat them in seconds. Or I make a weapon and use Nill at the tip of the weapon to hurt the slimes.

Both had pros and cons, but I realized that the second option was the more realistic. So first I had to find wood. First I tried to knock it down without Nill, but obviously the only thing this idea brought me was a bruise on my left hand. But my dominant hand is my right, so I took a deep breath and concentrated a good amount of Nill in my fist, and believe it or not, after a few blows I gave the tree, it fell down.

How strong Nill is... Also, Sheele told me that my Nill was weak, so I can't even imagine the level of an experienced hero.

As soon as she fell, I also looked for a rock so that I could make my weapon. But I had forgotten something essential... how was I going to bind it? There was no point in making the weapon if I didn't get something to bind it to. However, I was lucky enough to remember the laces from my shoe.

So I took the wood and, with the ideal rock (a pointed rock I found) made what was a kind of spear or something. The biggest problem was my shoes, but seeing that it was all I had, I couldn't do much.

So I went into the cave one more time, and I went into the cave that was there. And there were all those slimes, and apparently their anger hadn't passed, because as soon as they saw me they started to get agitated.

I hadn't tried putting Nill on the tip of the spear yet, so now was the time. As I threw myself into the pit, several slimes came after me quickly, like lions after their prey.

So I took a deep breath, and concentrated on leaving Nill at the tip of the spear, then attacked them and cut down three slimes at once. I did it... as soon as the other slimes saw that, they stopped immediately. So I started to kill them all, one after another, and as I killed them, the slimes that used to come after me, now ran away from me in desperation.

But I needed to train, so I killed them until there were no slimes left in that cave. At first I thought that this might have been stupid of me, for not having left any live slimes to reproduce, but I realized that they were born from the water in that pit.

I decided to set myself a week to train in that place. I was a beginner, and yet I could kill those slimes without any difficulty, so I would have to train somewhere else after a while. In addition, I needed the hero certificate, so I would need to make a trip to the city of Ur.

One week was enough, in fact perhaps much more than enough.
