Chapter 13:

The School Festival

Ex-High Schooler Hero

For most students, that was a normal day of school. For Fulgor, it was a life or death situation. He ran through his class and hid beneath Miles’ table.

“I preferred that guy when he treated me like trash.”

Like a hurricane Auron entered the room, holding various notes.

“There you are, come here, you have to study!”

Fulgor screamed in despair and tried to run again, Auron was faster, jumping the entire length of the room on the top of Fulgor.

“60% isn’t enough for any good college, I can’t let a friend of mine have bad grades. After I finish with your studies the Fujin Academy itself will want you there.”

“I don’t want to go to the Fujin Academy and I hate studying!”

The boy on the ground couldn’t escape without using his powers, and he didn’t want to hurt Auron, so he just struggled hoping someone would come to save him.

“So, what do you want to do after school? I will help you achieve your dream!”

Fulgor stopped struggling, since even he didn’t have the answer.

“I don’t know. I would like to be an explorer like my dad, but I also want to be a pilot, or maybe a diver on that weird place in the ocean full of monsters. There are too many options outside this school.”

“I see… So I will prepare a vocational test with 3000 questions and you will know for sure what your path is. I won’t take more than one hour.”

Before Fulgor could protest, Lapis arrived by their side, becoming shy by watching the two boys one over the other.

“Sorry, I didn’t want to interrupt you.”

Instantly both became red with shame and got up hastily.

“That is not what you are thinking about.” Said both in unison avoiding eye contact.

“Well, Barb asked me to help with these forms. We are voting to see what our classroom will do at the school festival.”

“Oh, it is already here.” Spoke Fulgor already returning to his normal self looking at Lapis’ paper.

“It will be my first festival with true friends!” Celebrated Auron with more energy than usual, and his two friends stared at him.

“I see that what I just said was a bit sad. Let's ignore it and see those forms.”

All the class reunited, discussing their possibilities. Fulgor actually didn’t care what would be chosen, he just wanted to have a good time with everyone, therefore he didn’t pay attention enough to understand what was the choice they made.

As the whole class worked building something Fulgor didn’t know what it was, he realized something.

“Where is Kazen? This is the kind of stuff that he loves.”

Scarmiglione by his side, hammering a wood plank, was the one who answered.

“I think some kaiju was attacking the coast and he went to help.”

“Oh, of course that makes sens- wait! Scarmiglione? What are you doing here!?”

Fulgor got up with sparks in his hands that melted the glue he was holding. The old enemy of them now wore their school uniform, with a lot less dark on her, but her black hair still covered one of her eyes.

“You can call me just Scar, and I've been in your class for a month now.” Answered her the same monotone way.

Auron and Fulgor exchange looks, none of them realized that before.

“Well, I’ve been on a hospital those last weeks.” Said Auron trying to excuse himself.

“But what are you doing here? Are you trying to steal our stars?”

“Relax, I’m here to study. ‘Malacoda’ – his real name is Steve – he was kind of my father and the rest of the Malabranche my family, since all the others are in prison for stalking and attack minors or something like that I took their money and became a student.”

Lapis smiled during the explanation, she already knew all that and soon the boys accepted their new companion.

“Good to you Lapis, now we have two elemental girls, our group is finally balanced!”

For some reason, that annoyed Lapis. She never cared about being part of the ‘boys group’.

“Anyway we have to finish building that. I’m going to see if Barb needs any help.

Lapis ran away, leaving the three to their work.

The festival was going great. A lot of parents and friends were visiting the school, as Fulgor was at the entrance of his classroom stand, still not realizing what it was about. He had several sheets of paper, filling in the 3000 questions Auron prepared.

“Excuse me.”

Fulgor raised his eyes, noticing Loretta. Even this not being a normal day of school, the casual clothes of the woman was very close to her usual librarian looks.

“What did your class make?”

The boy looked to his back trying to analyze what they had built.

“No idea.”

The answer made Loretta smile and her curiosity drew her to the papers.

“What are you doing?”

“A stupid vocational test Auron made for me. To know what I should do with my future.”

“A test can’t tell you that.”

The lightning elemental stared at her almost crying.

“I have been doing this for the last three hours!”

“Oh, sorry then, but only you can know for sure. For exemple, look at them.”

Fulgor observed his colleagues. Auron and Barb were scolding Enger for not doing his job right, Miles was hiding from Scar, who summoned two ghostly creatures to help on the job and Lapis was in a corner, looking at her hair length with a frown.

“What exactly am I supposed to notice?”

“Just… their nature. Auron e Barb are dedicated, Miles, even not being that brave, is so smart and loves technologies. I don’t know much about the new girl, but she seems to understand herself well enough, while Lapis still has doubts about herself, but not about what she wanted to do. Enger probably is going to jail. So, what are you Fulgor?”

The boy knew that his classmates were more decided than him, but he had so much he wanted to do.

“I don’t know, I wish I could do everything.”

“So why don’t you do it?”

The question was something Fulgor never even considered as a possibility.

“I can?”

“I don’t know. The only one who can tell that is yourself.”

As the boy started getting introspective, they heard a loud noise and saw Kazen approaching. He was covered in a green goo and holding a horn as big as himself.

“Hope I’m not too late to the festival! I brought gifts from the kaiju!”

“Speaking of someone who doesn’t know what to do with his life.”

Only Fulgor heard it and he did not understand what she meant since Kazen appeared to be 100% sure what he wanted to do.
