Chapter 21:

Usurp pt.2

The Arbiter

By the time they arrived, the sun was already setting. They landed a little away from the estate to avoid detection.

The rest of the way they would have to hike through the mountains; with all the equipment in tow, which was pretty exhausting.

Marcia, on the other hand, would climb a nearby rise and direct the troops.

"Let's roll!" Fuse said.

Under cover of darkness, the squad crept to the northwest side of the property where they executed step 1 of the operation.

"Place the ECM jammer." Marcia commanded over the directocom to all troops.

A pair of comrades carried a large ECM jammer and placed it next to the wall of the estate.

"ECM jammer ready." The comrade reported.

When active, Suranov could no longer call for reinforcements unless he relied on smoke signals.

But it was not to be activated until the next step of the operation was successful; otherwise, although reinforcements would not come, the guards in the estate would be alerted.

On to step 2 of the operation: disabling the security system.

This proved to be a bit more difficult, since you couldn't just destroy the cameras; much less the defense systems.

You had to turn off the security at the root; the security room with the head of security.

But the security room was on the east side of the property; you couldn't go there directly either, because you needed a key to access the room.

So first they would have to find the security assistant on patrol and take his key without the head of security noticing.

"Turn on night vision." Fuse ordered.

Not everyone in their squad had night vision, but once they made it inside it wouldn't matter.

"I see the security assistant patrolling the northeast side." Marcia reported.

"Be careful, there are five drones flying around outside and five more one-man patrols." She added.

Fuse went to the northeast side of the wall and peeked over it with the help of his comrades.

There were two drones he could see; and the security assistant.

Because so many people were hard to hide, Fuse set out alone to hunt for the key.

He climbed over the wall, careful not to be spotted by the drones.

The security chief assistant did not see him coming.

Fuse had to be careful to take the man out in an instant; if he lived for even a second, he could sound the alarm over his directocom.

The man was enjoying a cigarette when, in a flash, a knife was rammed into the side of his skull.

Swiftly, Fuse pulled the man into nearby bushes, where he then held a hacking device to the man's ear.

With such a hacking device, any layman could hack all sorts of things; that's why black market traders would part with these devices only for an expensive persuasion.

The hacking was successful and he was now able to hijack the directocom from the security assistant.

"I heard a strange noise, is everything okay?" a man on the other end of the line asked; the head of security.

No matter how fast you killed someone, it was still likely that at least a small sound would reach the other side of the directocom.

"Yeah, I was just spooked by a bird, don't worry." Ikeda replied.

"Roger." The head of security affirmed, not seeming to suspect anything.

A drone approached Fuse; he tried to hide in the bushes as best he could.

The drone passed Fuse without an incident; you had to be careful of those things.

With the help of the bushes, Fuse crept this way until he reached the security room, where he waited for a good time to enter.

The moment came and Fuse held his silenced T-Sindolore pistol at the ready, while with his other hand he held the key to the room.

Time for step 3 of the operation: prevent reinforcements.

"Activate the jammer." Fuse commanded.

"Jammer activating." A comrade reported.

As of now, communication through directocoms was no longer possible; the estate was now completely cut off from the world.

Fuse rushed into the room and in an instant that lasted no longer than the blink of an eye, the head of security lay lifeless across his desk. A single shot, clean through the head.

Next, Fuse took the wrist from the head of security and authorized the shutdown of the defense systems; now his comrades could follow him inside the mansion.

Now came step 4 of the operation: locate and reach Suranov.

Fuse briefly checked the cameras to locate Suranov; it didn't take long until he found him.

While Sergei Suranov was happily making money from his arms exports and extortions, he was playing with his daughter in his office.

The head of security's body armor was still usable, so Fuse put it on.

He signaled his comrades to come, taking care that they would not be spotted by the rest of the security staff.

One by one, they made their way to the security room, from which they then entered the south wing of the main building.

In the main building, the ceilings were high, the doors wide, and the rooms long.

Suranov's office was on the second floor, so they had to sneak up to the stairs.

Fuse led the way, coming to the beginning of a long corridor where there was no cover for him.

He signaled his comrades to wait with a hand signal.

Silently, he sprinted along the corridor and secured the other end of the corridor; his comrades followed.

One of the guard’s footsteps sounded from the room opposite; he had to be eliminated silently.

Fuse leaned against the door frame and held his pistol at the ready; if the guard came a little closer he could put a bullet clean through his head.

When it sounded like the man was close enough, Fuse peeked around the doorframe and went for the shot, but the man was now directly in front of him; he had waited too long.

Improvising quickly, Fuse tackled the man and yanked him to the ground, where he crushed his windpipe with one massive blow; he couldn't call for help with his directocom anyway.

But the man didn't give up and a scuffle ensued.

After a while, Fuse had the man in a chokehold, but because of the body armor it wasn't very effective.

Fortunately, a comrade came to the rescue, and while Fuse held the guard down, the comrade stabbed him several times until he finally slumped lifelessly.

Lured by the noise, another guard entered the room. With little time to react and still on the floor, Fuse tried to get off a good shot.

Meanwhile, Fuse's comrade had also put aside his knife and put a few panicked shots in the guard's direction.

Fortunately, one of their shots hit him in the head and the man slumped.

Unfortunately, they also hit the window behind him, and with a loud clang it shattered into a thousand pieces.

At first nothing happened; for a moment Fuse thought that no one had noticed the noise, or at least the security systems had stayed off, but then the whole operation was in danger.

A guard must have made it back to the security room and taken out the comrade there.

The alarm sirens began to sound.

The red emergency lights flooded the rooms.

The armored shutters blocked the exits.

The security guards readied themselves for a fight.

They were actually prepared for this contingency - all the comrades who came along were there for a reason - but that didn't mean the situation wasn't about to get a whole lot more dangerous.

The rest of Fuse's squad gathered around him.

"What happened?" they asked.

"Plan B happened. Prepare for enemy contact." Fuse announced.

Fuse switched to his T-Inudato and kept one of the doors in his sights, the others providing cover.

The security guards were there in no time.

Fuse quickly took out the first one who ventured into the room.

One of the security guards peered into the room and identified the intruders.

"It's probably the Moribundos! About 15 in the room, but there are probably more! Lightly armored well armed!" The scout shouted out.

The Kombattanten already had some encounters with the Moribundos - Vinganca's small organization - but they were not peaceful ones.

Fuse and his comrades were cornered and at a severe disadvantage; in such cases, they had to go on the offensive.

"On my mark." Fuse announced.

He tossed a stun grenade into the hallway.

Bang!

A light flashed and Fuse, along with his men, pushed back into the hallway.

The sound of an all-out battle ensued; there was gunfire from all kinds of calibers, the whizzing of bullets, explosions and cries of pain from every side.

Both sides suffered casualties, but the Moribundos took bigger ones.

About eight of Fuse's comrades lay wounded on the ground, but Fuse's team only took out three of the Kombattanten.

And if that wasn't enough trouble for Fuse, a yellow-green gas was now flooding into the rooms.

Fuse quickly responded, "Prepare the explosives!"

They had to get out, and they had to get out now.

The wounded were the first to be affected by the gas; first they began to cough uncontrollably and then they started to vomit.

Even the wounded Kombattanten were not spared; what were only wounded before were now corpses.

While some of the squad gave suppressive fire, the others took cover and detonated the explosives.

Boom!!!

A huge explosion erupted and the gas mixed with the dust from the blast.

The way out was open and Fuse poured outside along with his comrades and the gas, where they then headed straight for the security room in order to recapture it.

Outside, however, a very different monster awaited them.

Flamethrower turrets that had previously been embedded in the ground unseen now hurled white burning flames at them.

"Spread out!" Fuse yelled out.

A scorching wave of heat charred every hair not covered by clothing and he could only watch as his comrades burned alive, unable to smother the sticky flames.

Fuse could only watch as his comrades burned alive, unable to smother the sticky flames.

The faces that were once filled with determination were now just scared; scared in their purest form, and the screaming was one that would haunt one's nightmares.

Not only from poison gas, but also from white phosphorus-napalm mixtures Suranov did not shy away; he was a true sadist, Fuse thought to himself.

For every few meters he had to pay with another comrade; the streams of fire were hungry.

By spreading out, the casualties were reduced a bit, but by the time they reached the security room, they were a greatly diminished force.

Fuse briefly looked back at the flames feeding on his comrades before turning his attention to the door of the security room.

It was the same door, and he still had the same key.

Or so he thought; the key was nowhere to be found.

"Move!" A comrade shouted, time was of the essence.

He raised his breaching shotgun to the lock and fired.

The door swung open and a load of bullets greeted him.

That could have been him, Fuse reflected.

The comrade tumbled through the air and finally landed a few meters from the door; a shotgun blast at close range could not be survived.

Another comrade took the revenge for his colleague in his own hands and threw a grenade into the security room.

Two birds with one stone; it seemed the grenade had also deactivated the security system at the same time, and with it the gas and flamethrower turrets; it would not be reactivated so easily again.
