Chapter 17:
Alive
"Update me about the defense of the receptors" Astrea requested.
"Most of the units were already deployed, each member of the Fenix squad is guarding one, in exception of Creator and Power Core, I assigned two for each, therefore, all eight receptors have at least one Fenix" David reported.
"What about the defense systems?"
"It is still offline, force field, missile launchers, submachine turrets, everything is down" Ian said.
"I just can't access it, they not only have the codes, but someone is actively preventing me to take back the control" Tanya complained.
"Someone from inside??"
"No, elsewhere, I'm trying to trace him right away"
Astrea sighed "I hope this will be the last attempt of the terrorists, I'm already tired of dealing with this"
"I have finally found you guys" Vladmir arrived at the recreational room, Anna and Rafael were still sitting on the couch, in silence.
"Uh... what are you doing?" Vladmir asked after staring at them for a while.
"Nothing" Anna replied "We are casually doing nothing"
"You guys found out about George, right?"
"Yes"
"Yes, he was a spy" Vladmir sat on the couch with them "So what?"
"SO WHAT??" Rafael exclaimed "I'm not concerned about him, I'm concerned about what we have been doing all this time"
"Wha- what do you mean?"
"George's jokes were right, we do not have a single concrete proof about those monsters being real, yet we spent everything we have and more to prevent them to come to us"
"I don't get what are you trying to say"
"Most of our population suffers because of us!!" Rafael stood up "Because we created this story of monsters, we make them pay for our privileges. In name of their safety, we kill them"
"You are trying to say that the corruptions does not exist? An-"
"They clearly don't, like, have you ever seen one? Because I didn't. Yet most of our resources are invested in the army while people die out there, without food, heat; they don't have basic needs"
"George was who said that?"
"It doesn't matter if was him or not, but I can't defend a government who treat it's people like this, I was just lucky that I was born at the privilege side"
The three kept in silence for a while.
"How do you know it is true?" Vladmir calmly asked.
"Every single soul in this city know that people are poor, I just didn't knew it was our fault"
"No, I mean, they made this story, and everyone believed for four hundred years, and only now the truth is coming out?"
"Well, sometime it would come out"
"If it is, it doesn't matter, even if you do not believe in the army anymore and do not agree with the government's actions, those terrorists are not fighting for these nobels beliefs" Vladmir stood up as well "Their plan is a massacre, if the force field turns off, people will die, a lot of people. Guilty or innocent, rich or poor, military or civilian, many will die, so tell me, this is how you make justice?"
"No..." Rafael replied.
"You can quit the army later, but right now, you are our SCU pilot, and we need to stop them"
"Wait" Anna excalimed
"It was already hard to convince Rafael, now you as well?" Vladmir complained.
"Just hear me out"
"They can attack at any moment, everyone is already out there, we must go"
"If everyone is already out there, an extra squad won't make too much difference. Now, one of you ever suspected of George before?"
"Not at all" Rafael sadly replied.
"Well, he had awful jokes sometimes, but he was excellent soldier, never hesitant in his missions, and friendly with everyone, so... no"
"Yeah, General also commented that, and also that he was an splendid hacker, I never even saw him in a computer"
"What is your point? Hurry up" Vladmir was almost running out patience.
"Someone skilled like him, was caught in his most important task, of delivering the power grid to his companions"
"But he delivered it, did you forget about what General and her secretary was talking before they left?" Rafael replied.
"Yeah, but he was way overconfident even when we all knew their plan"
"My paycheck isn't this high for me to hear this shit" Vladmir sat again, frustrated.
"What if this was his plan all along?"
"What?" Both of them asked, quite confused.
"I mean, he managed to put every single unit at the borders of the city"
"And for what? They won't attack the base" Vladmir was angry by now.
"Why not?"
"Because the base's defense system is powerful enough to defend itself, even without soldiers"
"So what else can they attack?"
"I don't know, can we go now?"
"Wait, it is a good theory, let me think" Rafael said.
"Even you Rafael, c'mon" Vladmir was at the verge of giving up.
"If you would help us think instead of complain, it would be better" Anna crossed her arms, looking at Vladmir.
"Fine, at the center of the city we have the military base, the main force field pillar, the town hall, most of the bunkers, and many financial buildings. None of them are worth it for them to attack or it is a place which they have the firepower to attack, happy now?"
"The oxygen control station" Rafael spoke seriously.
"Oxygen control station? I thought that the oxygen engines were automatized" Anna was confused.
"Everything that is automatized has a control station" Rafael explained.
"And is at the center, actually, quite near the base" Vladmir started himself to connect the pieces "Not near enough for the base to protect, but its defenses are not that strong. It could be a target, but we estimate they have ten to fifteen destroyers, so it would be risky"
"Well, there is no problem about we going check that out" Anna said, a little excited.
"I hope I don't lose my job because of this" Vladmir sighed "Let's go"
"Sergeant Kostaya, can you explain to me what are you doing?" Astrea asked, furious, through the communicator.
"General, we think that their actual target is the oxygen control station, so we were going to check it" Vladmir replied the most politely he could.
Rafael was in the SCU, and Anna and Vladmir with their ARCs, at the platform. They were all equipped with every weapon available, Rafael looked like would go to a war.
"I have already blocked their passage, but we do not have anyone to arrest them" Ian said.
"I can deactivate their ARCs but the SCU is more complicated" Tanya commented.
"Let them go" Astrea ordered after a while thinking.
"WHAT?" All of them spoke in shock.
"Do I need to remind you that these guys are from the spy's squad" David said
"And they will be already inside the station, the defenses won't be able to hold them" Ian complemented.
"Sergeant Kostaya was the one who arrested Klyman, and is corporal Kouri at the SCU, he won't betray us" Astrea replied.
"Uhh... General, aren't you trusting them a little too much" Tanya nervously said.
"Perhaps, but the idea of the terrorists attack the oxygen control station is not that bad if you think about it"
"Well, if you say so"
The gate opened and they arrived at the station, it had a small force field around it and a few submachine turrets, the few workers were a little scared, wondering why military were there. They wandered for a while, but everything was okay.
"I don't know if I'm glad or not that you were wrong Anna" Rafael said.
"It hurts my ego a little bit, but it is probably for the better"
"Was worth a shot" Vladmir said "Now let's go back to-"
At that moment, the road that lead to the station entrance blew up, opening a hole. From it, hundreds of destroyers showed up, they all had align in position to attack the station.
"Contact Creator immediately" Astrea ordered quickly as she was seeing Rafael's vision.
"You said ten to fifteen...?" Rafael's voice was trembling.
Anna and Vladmir were speechless, in shock.
"The last resistance of the Government is upon us" Ulysses proclaimed "Let's crush them" and all destroyers advanced.
"Listen up guys, you have three minutes until Creator arrives, find a way to hold them" Astrea said extremely nervous.
"Three minutes...?" The three were stunned seeing that armada approaching the station "You have gotta be kidding me"
