Chapter 34:

The Evi I Know

The Devil I Know

As Evi ran up towards us, I could feel that this was different.

I put away the sword and I went to go meet her.

“Uh, Ri-chan?”

“Rin-san?”

“It’s okay.”

I ran to her at a full sprint.

I nearly flew.

I jumped and for a moment I was hugged by seven arms.

Then six.

Then five.

Then four. Three.

Two.

Her arms had recessed.

The glow faded from her eyes.

The red remained.

Her horns. Like long ears.

This feral, blood-soaked, red-eyed bunny rabbit that I was so glad to have back with us. Smart and confident and kind and supportive and just a little goofy. Blunt and sarcastic and vulnerable and real.

Entirely human. That’s Evi.

That’s the Evi I know.

I bury my face in her hair, arms wrapped tight around her waist.

“Hey Rin.”

“Hey.”

“…I’m really glad you’re safe.”

Her voice is soft. Her hair is soft.

“I’m really glad you’re back,” I murmur into her neck.

“So am I,” she whispers.

Her hold is gentle, but firm.

“…Evi.”

“Yeah Rin?” She nuzzles her cheek against my head.

“…You smell really bad right now.”

She laughs. “Hah. I-I, I’m covered in blood Rin.”

“Yeah…”

I realize her hair isn’t actually that soft right now. It’s mostly the feeling of the moment. In actuality it’s a bit tacky and stiff, dried by the wind.

I pull my head away, arms still locked around her waist.

“Oh-oh my God, Rin.”

“What?”

“I-I just got so much blood on you.”

“I probably already had blood on me.”

“This is a lot more.”

“Is it that bad.”

“You have white hair Rin. It is really noticeable.”

“…”

“Adorable white hair.”

“Thank you.”
