Chapter 35:

E: My Guardian Angel

The Devil I Know

“Hey Rin-san, Evi-san…?” Aya interrupts, “Not to interrupt, but the creature with all the eyes is about to come through.”

“E-chan, do you need healing?” Aki asks.

“That’s fine. I’ve got it. I owe you guys anyway.”

“E-evi, it’s still incredibly dangerous,” Rin says.

“Right. It was pretty fast before…”

“It should be poisoned,” Aya tells me. “At this point we should end it quick right? Mercy kill?”

“It tried to murder all of us and crashed a train, so I’m not feeling very merciful. Regular kill is fine. Also it’s a mon—“ I cut myself off, then continue anyway, “…ster.”

Aya then wraps a few vines around herself and the others, “Extra mobility in case of emergency. I assume you’ll be fine Evi-san?”

“Yep.”

“That’s a neat idea Ayano,” Rin compliments her.

“Thank you Rin-san,” she seems proud.

The beast appears from out of the tangle of vines, zipping around as it has so often in the past. It’s definitely slower. Much slower.

Good.

Here we go.

I take a running start and I smash my fist into its face.

It’s flung backwards and into the flat side of Rin’s sword.

So few eyes left, so little time.

Adrenaline. This could actually be fun.

It lunges at me.

The flat of Rin’s sword again.

Summoned in an instant, directly in front of me.

My guardian angel.

She sends it away as Aya binds her vines around the monster.

Wow. Those are fast.

I hit it again. And again. And again.

Popping eyes all over its body.

“Oooh Yaya-chan! Can you bring me over there?” Aki asks.

“Are you sure?”

“Yep. Send me!”

Aya’s vine takes Aki over to the bound up monster, “This is for being awful! You absolute piece of garbage!” She lays her hands on the monster, as her eyes glow green the beast almost seems to deflate. It dries up like a raisin in the sun.

Eyes shriveling and popping as it falls limp.

It’s actually a little hard to watch.

But then.

Its empty eyes begin to stretch, filling with outward protruding teeth, shifting to become additional gaping mouths. Even the hole I put through its chest has fangs.

“Pull me back! Pull me back!” Aki yells as Aya does just that, "And for the record, I did not give it those teeth!”

It chews through the vines. I think this is some sort of last ditch, final stand kind of thing. It’s doing all it can to stay alive now.

I guess I can still punch it? It’ll hurt, but that’s fine. Nothing I can’t handle.

It tries to duck out of the way, retreating to safety.

It collides dead on with the flat side of Rin’s sword.

I run towards it.

“Evi!”

She summons the sword by my left hand.

I grab it by the handle and swing.

I cut it in half.

...

...

...

...

And it’s dead.

Wow.
