Chapter 12:

The Eye Lab

Void in the Realm

Kendra insisted on going back to the office as she knew Luther had headed back home and now might be the right time to explore. “I guess I have missed a few documents I need to work on tonight at the lab. Could you please take me back to the office?” Kendra asked the driver. “Sure ma’am,” the driver took her back to her workplace. She got down and headed straight to the lab so that no one could doubt her and, on the way, back she took the route through the reception. She took a closer look at the wall. Beneath the name Ray, it was written founder. Kendra was shocked as all the robots that Luther had back in her universe were all called Rays and had the same face as the one on the wall.

“Can I help you with something?” Kendra heard a voice from behind her. She turned back and it was a tall woman wearing business casuals and looked elegant with a strong voice. “Oh, it’s you,” she said. “Kendra, right?” she continued. “Yes, and you are?” Kendra asked politely. “I’m Cibil. I work here as a managing director of the eye team,” she introduced herself. “That’s incredible. I came back to gather my documents that I left in the lab and noticed this attractive visual, “she pointed out the projected mural behind the picture and the logo. “Yes, that’s marvelous indeed,” Cibil said. “Let me escort you outside as it’s getting late for you and tomorrow is a big day,” she added. “Oh yes! The product launch by the eye team. I’m sure you have a lot of arrangements to do. If you need a hand, I’m happy to help,” Kendra wanted to grab this opportunity to learn what’s going on. “Luther headed back home early so I might need some technical help if it’s not too much work for you,” Cibil said.

“I would be glad to,” Kendra said. Cibil unlocked the encrypted lab and they both went inside. It had a grand entrance with so many automated systems working together. There was not even a small machinery sound. It was all working simultaneously on different lines with great speed. Kendra was awestruck by the work. “These are working on different products that will be launched early next month. I would like you to fix one of the machines that is now connected to the product that is to be launched tomorrow. I didn’t want to make the situation get worse. The tech support is taking longer than I thought and Luther is out of reach,” Cibil explained. Kendra took a look at the code and asked for administrative access. As it was the day before launch day and this was important, Cibil gave access without asking for permission. Kendra fixed the machine in 15 minutes. “That’s amazing. Thank you so much for your timely work,” Cibil thanked. Kendra noticed a folder “TacoTuesday”. She found it a little skeptical on why it was placed in one of the confidential places. “Okay, I will go grab some dinner on the way. Do you know where to get tacos? It’s Tuesday!” Kendra asked eagerly to Cibil, walking towards the exit. “What’s tacos? It sounds like a new food item,” Cibil asked.

Kendra explained, “It’s of several types. My favorite is soft taco with chicken fillings.” “It sounds delicious but I have never heard of it though,” Cibil said. “It was great meeting you and thanks again for your help today,” she added. Kendra realized Taco Tuesdays are not a thing here and she was more curious on what’s inside of that folder. The time was past 7. There was a different driver than usual in the car. She boarded the car, “May I know where the other driver is?” Kendra asked. “His shift is done so he left. I will be dropping you home today,” he said. “Which route would you like to take?” he asked. Kendra was so surprised and happy at the same time when he asked that question. “Scenic route would be great,” her eyes were wide open when she said that. “Sure,” he said and headed in the other direction than the usual route. She was so excited to see nature out here as she had never encountered it in this universe from the day, she stepped foot.

The roads were wide and there were a lot of buildings and each one was of different geometric shapes. Some of the buildings had moving structures where a part of the building was always having some sort of motion. They were very colorful. The road signs were all screens and wireless. It was hung with an invisible wire so it looked as if the signs were on its own. After a few blocks, there were farms and a lot of animals. All the animals had three eyes. Initially when she first saw the deer the other day when she arrived, she felt weird but now she got habituated.

While moving past a house she saw a creature that looked like a Dilophosaurus but they drove past it. She was so glad she left late today as she had the opportunity to encounter this whole place. It’s been a while they were traveling but they weren’t home yet. “How much longer will it take to return?” Kendra asked as suddenly started having short breaths. “We will be reaching in another 15 minutes,” he said. Kendra tried not to inform about her condition. After 5 minutes, Kendra couldn’t breathe properly. She was struggling and the driver stopped to ask for help.

The house was just 7 minutes away but she wanted an oxygen mask immediately. The driver ran into a house nearby and asked “Could you please lend your oxygen supply to her?” “I can give a pill with oxygen content in it as that’s what we have in here for emergency purposes” she said. “That would do for now.” he said. The driver ran with a pill. Kendra fainted by the time the driver returned. Breath was still there. He inserted the pill into her mouth and poured a little water into her mouth.
