Chapter 18:

"Do I know you?"

Void in the Realm

Rene wasn’t sure what Kendra was talking about. He met her for the first time here but she acted as if she knew him from before. Also, only very few people address him as V. “I must have mixed you up with someone else,” Kendra said to avoid embarrassment. He genuinely looked like he hadn't seen her before in his lifetime. “I am sure Luther had covered your job responsibilities. Shall we have an office tour?” Kendra asked. “Sure, that sounds great” Rene was excited to join the lab. Kendra showed around and they came across the time machine. “I attended the event early this morning. I would like to file a petition for sure,” Rene smiled. “Is there any period you would like to go to?” Kendra asked. “Yes, I have always been interested in being one of those pirates. Fan of Jack Sparrow,” Rene enacted like him. “Cool, I am afraid they would let you travel for those reasons,” Kendra chuckled. “Worth a try,” Rene said and walked towards the cafeteria.

“I am hungry. Would you like to grab a bite?” Rene asked. “Look who got familiar with the workplace already,” Kendra said. “I know right. What would you like?” Rene asked. ”I will just have an iced coffee, easy on ice please,” Kendra placed her order. “You know, a person’s coffee order says a lot about their personality?” Rene asked. “Really? What personality do you think I have based on my order Mr. Rene?” Kendra asked with a small smile and in a sarcastic tone. “Well, you are bold and spontaneous. Sometimes, you are childlike and imaginative,” Rene jogged to get his order. He ordered Ramen. “So, am I right?” He placed his food on the table and sat across Kendra. “Maybe,” Kendra answered while taking a sip of coffee.

“I am waiting to start working tomorrow,” Rene said. Cibil and Dylan came their way. “Hello Kendra, can we speak for a bit?” Dylan asked. “Sure, meet Rene, our new intern,” Kendra said before leaving. “Yes, we have met before. Dylan right? And you are?” Rene turned towards Cibil and asked. “I am Cibil, managing director of the eye team,” she responded. “Great to meet you!” Rene said. “Yes, what is it, Dylan? Is everything okay?” Kendra was curious about his arrival with Cibil. “I found something out, Kendra. The time machine that was launched today had been remodeled from a previous version. We need to take a look at it immediately.” Dylan said nervously. “How come you were asked to work immediately? Weren’t you supposed to join tomorrow?” Kendra asked. “I ran over Cibil and she helped me with an office tour and I am assigned to work on the Time travel machine’s future enhancements. That is when I came to know that it wasn’t a newly built machine.” Dylan and Kendra walked towards the eye lab.

“Does Cibil know about us?” Kendra asked silently when she walked away from them. “I don’t think so. The team was testing on the machine when we entered the lab, before making it usable for the public and that’s when I realized something,” Dylan showed her the exact lever that was present in the machine that they used to travel to this universe. “This is mind blowing! I feel like we are close to finding a way back home,” Kendra grinned.

“I think it is not as straightforward as it is. We were a part of building this machine. But I am still not sure how we managed to build it as it is an ongoing technology,” Dylan said. “Yes, I agree. However, we need to figure it out in order to get back,” Kendra got excited. “Figure out what?” Rene asked, walking towards them. “I thought you left,” Dylan looked at him as if Rene was hiding something. “Yup, I forgot my card,” Rene said. “I don’t know what’s up with him. Something is totally off,” Dylan has a suspicion on Rene. “You are just overthinking. He just doesn’t remember anything probably because he is from this universe and those things hadn’t happened to him yet,” Kendra suggested. “While that must be the case, he is still not one of us,” Dylan pinpointed, “YET,” Kendra said.

“Do you still have feelings for this guy, now that he doesn’t even remember anything?” Dylan looked at Kendra in a way as if he was concerned about her. “Feelings? We are just friends,” Kendra’s face turned red. “Haha, so funny, '' Dylan said in a sarcastic tone. “Okay, maybe more than friends,” Kendra giggled. “Anyway, he doesn’t remember anything so currently, we work together and nothing more.” Kendra said firmly. “All right! Those are your words. Not mine,” Dylan shrugged. “Whatever, we have bigger things to worry about,” Kendra changed the topic. “Dylan, can you give that lever to me?” Cibil came rushing towards Dylan and grabbed the lever from him. “You both need to see this,” Cibil called them inside a lab that was adjacent to Cibil’s lab.
