Chapter 8:

The Sanctuary

PANDEMONIUM

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, they reached the ground. Hugo looked out the window and saw a sprawling cityscape stretching out before them. The lights twinkled in the night sky and the streets were bustling with life. Hugo's heart was beating fast as they stole a motorbike from an alleyway and rode towards their destination.

They eventually arrived at a large compound that was surrounded by a tall metal fence. Hugo saw several guards patrolling the area, but there was no sign of any other life. Mac pulled the bike up to a small gate and they were quickly let in. Hugo looked around in awe as they entered the complex - it was like a small city inside the walls. People were everywhere, and it seemed like everyone had some kind of job or purpose.

Mac led them to a small room, and told Hugo to wait while he went to talk to the people in charge. After what seemed like hours, Hugo heard Mac's voice from outside and opened the door. Mac had returned with another man who introduced himself as the leader of the Sanctuary. He welcomed Hugo warmly and thanked him for his help in getting them here.

The leader explained that this was a safe haven for people who have been wronged by the Council, and that they could stay here as long as they wished. Hugo felt a sense of relief wash over him - he was finally somewhere safe. He still had no idea what the future held, but at least now he had a chance to make something of himself and do what he wanted without fear of being caught or punished.

It felt strange, to be accepted so easily after everything. But it was also strangely comforting. He was part of something bigger now, a group of people who were all in the same boat - victims of an oppressive system that had done them wrong. Together, maybe they could make a difference and bring about real change.

Hugo smiled and nodded, feeling more hopeful than he had in a long time.

"Welcome home," said the leader of the Sanctuary.

Inside was poorly lit, but large - with bluish florescent lights illuminating long halls that lead to hundreds of barracks. They were all empty, of course, but that wasn't to say the space was uninhabited, or so he had been told. First order of business was a shower and to get his bearings, Hugo had been through a lot and he needed a break to just relax and let his guard down.

He followed Mac down the halls and into a small room, and he was immediately hit with the smell of soap and steam. The shower was already running, and Hugo quickly stripped off his clothes and stepped in. The hot water felt like a blessing, and he let it cascade over his body as he tried to wash away all the dirt, grime, and stress from the past few days.

When he emerged from the shower, clean and invigorated, he found a set of clothes laid out for him on the bed. He dressed quickly, feeling better than he had in a long time. It was nice to be in clean clothing again, even if they weren't his own.

The leader of the Sanctuary then explained that Hugo would have access to all sorts of resources here - food, shelter, medical care, and even weapons if needed. He also said that they were always looking for more people who wanted to join them in their fight against the oppressive regime that was suffocating their world.

Hugo thought about it for a moment - he had never been one for violence or fighting, but here he could make a difference. He could fight for what he believed in and help those who were being oppressed by the same forces that had wronged him.

He looked around at the faces of his new comrades - determined and hopeful - and smiled.

He looked at the leader himself, who looked like he and Mac could be brothers, except everyone just called him "The Leader". Hugo liked him, after all, he passed out the food and showed Hugo around. Perhaps he was simple, or stupid, but either way, Hugo was grateful.
