Chapter 12:

The Calm Before the Storm

Fangs and Facades

Mika and Yuna exchanged worried glances as an announcement echoed through the hallways. "What do you think this is about?" Mika whispered to Yuna.

"I don't know, but it doesn't sound good," Yuna replied, her voice laced with anxiety. "The superintendent never makes announcements like this herself. Something must be really wrong."

As they made their way to the auditorium, Yuna felt her heart racing with apprehension. The other students around them were murmuring nervously, and she could feel the tension in the air.

When they arrived, they took their seats and waited anxiously for the assembly to begin. The superintendent walked onto the stage, her face grave and serious.

"Good morning, students," she began, her voice shaking slightly. "I'm afraid I have some difficult news to share with you today. Last night, there was an incident in town. The bodies of two young people were found on the beach this morning, initially it looked as if the committed suicide together."

"However, during the following investigation it was discovered that they had been brutally attacked. Their body's were then thrown over the cliffs near the beach in an attempt to conceal the crime'"

Gasps filled the auditorium as the students exchanged fearful looks. Yuna felt a chill run down her spine. This was serious.

"We don't know who or what is responsible for these attacks," the superintendent continued. "But we believe that they may be related to recent reports of strange activity in the area. We are taking all necessary precautions to ensure your safety, and we urge you to be vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to the authorities immediately."

As the superintendent finished her announcement, the students started to whisper amongst themselves, their faces pale and frightened. Yuna could hear questions being murmured around her, the fear evident in everyone's voices.

"What kind of strange activity?" one student asked, her voice trembling.

"Are we in danger?" another student called out from the back of the room.

"What are the police doing to catch the killer?" a student near Yuna's row demanded, the panic in her voice rising.

The superintendent held up her hand, calling for silence. "We understand that you are all frightened and concerned," she said, her voice calm and reassuring. "We are working closely with the authorities to ensure that the culprit is found and brought to justice. In the meantime, we have increased security measures around the school and we ask that you all remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity."

"But what about the people who were killed, did we know them?" another student shouted out, her voice quivering with emotion.

"We will not be releasing any information regarding those who were killed at this time," the superintendent said, her tone firm. "All we can say is that the two victims were two young people who had recently moved to this area."

"We are deeply saddened by this tragedy," the superintendent replied, her voice softening. "We have grief counselors available for anyone who needs them, and we encourage you to talk to a trusted adult if you are feeling overwhelmed or scared."

Yuna's heart raced as the superintendent announced the brutal attack that had taken place in their town. The news sent waves of fear and unease through the auditorium as students exchanged worried glances and whispered among themselves.

"What do you think happened?" Mika asked Yuna, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I don't know," Yuna replied, her eyes glued to the stage. "But it sounds really bad."

As the superintendent finished her announcement, the students began to murmur nervously. A few brave souls raised their hands, hoping to get more information.

"Excuse me, but what are the police doing about this?" one student called out.

"Yes, and what about the school?" another added. "Are we going to have extra security or something?"

The superintendent looked over the crowd, her expression grave. "We are working closely with the police department to ensure your safety," she said firmly. "We have also increased security measures here at the school, and we will continue to do everything in our power to keep you all safe."

But her words did little to calm the nerves of the students, who continued to whisper and fret among themselves.

"Hey, guys," a voice called out from the back of the auditorium. It was one of the student council members, a tall, confident girl named Akira. "If you have any more questions or concerns, feel free to come talk to us. We're here to help."

A few students nodded in agreement, grateful for the offer of support.
