Chapter 1:

Sunday Letters

Melodies Of Eloquence

Title: Sunday Letters

Every week

Every Sunday of the week.

I always waited for it.

I’m always excited for it.

It’s the reason why I started each week with a bright smile. It always arrives every

Sunday.

It was his letters. Lucas’ letters.

They always gave me courage, happiness and strength. It may be just silly ramblings to any stranger. But to me, they are my everything.

Because those belong to Lucas Perez, my special person. He lived far away from here since he moved out from our hometown. But before he left, he promised me he'd write to me and he did.

Now, the awaited Sunday finally arrived. I looked outside the window, looking for a familiar mailman, my eyes looking in every direction.

“Dear, drink your coffee before it gets cold.” Mother nagged, her hands on her hips.

“Yes, Mother.” I replied curtly, not breaking my gaze outside the window. What’s taking so long? I started to fidget my braids. I saw my reflection on the window and noticed my ginger hair really has gotten long enough for me to tie it to braids. It was short before Lucas left.

Then suddenly, I spotted the same old mailman, heading this way. I rushed towards the door right before he rang the doorbell.

“Good morning, Miss Tania! A letter for you. Just as usual.” The mailman said with a smile as he handed over the letter.

Here it is! Lucas’ letter!

“And also, a package for you.” The old mailman said, to my surprise. Hm? Who could it be?

I checked the package details, but there’s no information about the sender. It was only addressed to me. After the mailman left, I headed straight upstairs to my room and opened Lucas’ letter, excited to read it. As usual, just like all of his letters, it’s always scented with a sweet fragrance. I don’t know much, but it smells like flowers and I love it.

Okay, let’s see what the letter said:

“Dear Tania, my beloved, how are you? Have you been well? I’m coming for you. By the time you read this letter, I might have arrived there. Meet me at our special place where everything started. Devotedly yours, Lucas Perez.”

I couldn’t believe it! I stared at the letter and read it a few more times. He’s coming! Lucas is coming!

I was about to go downstairs, but I remembered there’s a package. It seems suspicious, but my curiosity will just eat me up. So, I opened the package and-?!

“Nia! Going for a walk?” James said from the balcony of his house. James Lawrence. He’s my childhood friend who lives in the same neighborhood. I’m heading towards the place to meet Lucas.

“Yes! When did you come back from your vacation?” I asked him as I remembered he was away from home for a vacation.

“Oh! I came back yesterday. Wow! I like the color of your lips. New lipstick?” as I heard this, I couldn’t help but flinch.

“Y-yeah! I w-was trying f-for a new look.” I replied, stuttering.

“Well, it’s a killer look.” James said with a smile. His dimples were showing which is a feature I’ve always known about him. His curly blonde hair looks like it’s shimmering especially now that the sun shone upon it. It’s very in contrast to Lucas’ slick raven black hair that is as dark as a moonless night.

“Thanks!” I awkwardly smiled back as I hurriedly walked, leaving James behind.

I’m trying my best to not remember earlier this morning.

I’m finally here.

The place where we first met. The place where he took his promise. The place where I last saw him. Now, here he is. Lucas stood there. The breeze made the field of purple hyacinths move.

As soon as I caught the glimpse of him, I rushed towards him for a warm embrace. In each other’s arms, we stayed still.

“I miss you, Tania.” I heard him whisper. If he really did miss me then why would he do that?

I broke free from the hug.

“I miss you too, Lucas.” I gave him a smile.

“Did you enjoy my letters?” Lucas asked with a grin.

“Of course, I did! I also love the sweet scent that comes along with it. What flower was it?”

Then, Lucas’ grin turned into a smirk. The next words he said caught me off guard.

“Nerium oleander.”

Wait, isn’t that-? My thoughts were confirmed as I suddenly coughed up blood.

“That’s right. I mixed a poisonous flower to the scent. I put a little bit in every letter, but it looks like you reached your limit.” He said as I stared at him in disbelief.

“But why?” I’m starting to lose my senses.

“Why am I trying to kill you? Simple. I caught you kissing that Lawrence punk and that was the reason why I moved out!” Lucas shouted as he laughed maniacally.

Me? Kiss James? Before Lucas moved out?

Then, an old memory resurfaced. It was the night that there was a drinking party. I remembered I was wasted back then. But the next day, James told me that Lucas helped me get home. And yes, I kissed someone but I definitely thought it was—

It wasn’t you?” I mumbled to myself, but Lucas didn’t seem to hear it. I coughed up blood again so I took a deep breath and said:

“Will you listen to my dying request? Please?” As soon as Lucas heard this, he scoffed at me.

“Sure, since this will be your last.” Lucas agreed as he stepped closer to me.

“Kiss me.” My request certainly made Lucas’ eyes widen. But later on, he let out a smirk then held my cheek and caressed it.

Just like that, our lips touched and it was a long kiss.

I had enough of it. I shoved him back. My breathing is starting to get heavy.

Lucas started laughing like a madman.

Wait for it…

As I expected, he stopped as he’s vomiting blood, veins bulge out and visible as his eyes turned red.

“You’re not the only one who will do the killing.” This time, I’m the one who’s smirking. My mind is starting to get hazy.

Lucas collapsed to the ground as his breathing became ragged until it stopped.

I recalled the package that was sent to me this morning. It was a bunch of pictures that horrified me. Lucas is with a different girl in each picture who were doing intimate acts. He’s cheating on me. Black clouded my mind. Besides the pictures, there's lipstick with a note saying it contains fatal poison and a bottle saying it’s an antidote for the user. So, without hesitation, I put on the lipstick and drank the antidote.

And here we are.

In the place where everything started and ironically, where everything ended.

I closed my eyes as a tear rolled down my cheek. The two of us lay lifeless on a field of purple hyacinths.

“James! Brother! When are you giving back my camera?”

“I’m already done with it.”
