Chapter 24:
Bitter-Sweet
Mr.Verlice left the earliest among all of them. He left at four in the morning for district six.
There wasn't that much crowd on the border of district five and district six. The districts are located in a straight line. The line begins from the Canadian border, where district one begins and ends at the Mexican border, where district six ends.
Mr. Verlice got out of his car.
"Isaiah!," said Mr. Sivan, a man with short grey hair and green eyes.
He was Mr. Verlice's old friend.
"Ah, Ethan. It's nice to see you," he said.
"How have you been doing, Ethan?," Mr. Verlice asked him, as he walked towards his house in the chilly cold weather.
"I'm fine. But, the district isn't," he said.
"You've gotta tell me about that," Mr. Verlice said.
"I'm gonna get you coffee," Mr. Sivan said, pulling down the blinds.
"Why did you do that?," Mr. Verlice asked.
"I'll tell you in a minute. Coffee's first," Mr. Sivan said.
"Here you go," he said, as he put two coffee mugs on the table.
"Thanks. Smells good," Mr. Verlice said.
Mr. Sivan sat down. He sighed.
"Thank God, there are no cars outside," he said.
"Why?," Mr. Verlice asked.
"The less cars there are outside, the safer you are inside," he said.
"God, I can't catch up with you. You know me, Ethan. You've gotta explain things," Mr. Verlice said, laughing.
Mr. Sivan laughed.
"Things have been weird ever since the pandemic ended. When I moved into this place, it was a really nice place. Everything was quiet and only a few people lived here because this place was so expensive. But, things have changed so badly.
You know that Black Monday is one hell of an organization. Those fucking idiots think that they can do as they please! All of the people that live in district six fully know that organization is a group of demons.
The people who work in that organization are brainwashed to do what the leader wants them to. They have no will.
The one who stands at the summit of the organization, G. Blanc, he's a total asshole! He wants to bring back the pandemic that was here decades ago," Mr. Sivan said.
Mr. Verlice's eyes widened.
"You're actually kidding me. Aren't you?! That pandemic will destroy the whole world!," he said.
"G. Blanc knows that. He loves to be alone. He's crazy. He wants everyone in the world to leave him alone. He wants no one to live. He has his own following, too," Mr. Sivan said.
"What?! What do you mean by that?," Mr. Verlice asked.
"Isaiah, people literally worship that man, thinking that he is a hero!," he said.
"I didn't knew about that. That thing doesn't happen in the other districts," he said.
"No, it doesn't. That's what makes district six so different. People here are a part of a big cult. Those people all work for Black Monday. There are only some people in this district that don't follow him. There are always cars outside to monitor our moves," he said.
"This is so fucked up! I don't know what I'm gonna say to the others now!," Mr. Verlice said, angry.
"What?! What are you after? I mean, there's a good reason for you to be here, right?," Mr. Sivan asked.
"Ethan, you know Mason, right? I'm here to investigate about him. There's someone else involved in this, too. She's a runaway girl from the young's residency in district four. She's a total pain in the ass and she's actually the new Black Monday rookie," Mr. Verlice said.
"She's using the name, Amy, but her real name's Alethea, right?," Mr. Sivan said.
"Yeah, right. Wait, you knew?!," Mr. Verlice asked.
"No, I didn't knew. It's been all over the newspapers here. I found out from there. You do know that the newspapers here are absolutely different from the ones you have back at home, right?," Mr. Sivan asked.
"Yeah, I know that. Do you know anything else about her?," he asked.
"No. They didn't put that much stuff in there. Just this much," he said.
"I'm actually shocked they put her real name in there," Mr. Verlice said.
"Oh, yeah. They do that for the new rookies. So, that they can get popular among the people of district six. They even put pictures of them in the newspapers. They have their own website, too. You have to go through a difficult test to get a membership," he said.
"You said you wanted to check out the rookie and Mason, right? Well, they're both here. I'll take you to them. But, you'll have to keep your guard up," Mr. Sivan said.
"God, you're literally such a blessing to me!," Mr. Verlice said.
"Nah. I'm only doing this 'cause I don't wanna die. I survived the pandemic once. I can't do that shit again," Mr. Sivan said. Mr. Verlice laughed.
