Chapter 3:

The Hunt for the Devil, Herself

The City Far from Bliss

Radiation Lad had got his parking spot. He quickly took off his helmet and his jacket. He reached into his pocket and pulled out five quarters and his phone. He slotted four of his quarters into the parking meter. Glancing over at the vehicles next to him, he saw one had two minutes left. He absentmindedly put a quarter in and saw the meter go up to 17 minutes. His eyes traveled downwards to his phone. His henchman had just sent him their location, not far away.

Radiation Lad made his way through the barren sidewalk, it was just before lunchtime, soon it would be hectically packed. A block away, he saw his henchman waving at him. He was embarrassed, but waved back. He tightened his posture as he walked over to them. He handed the henchman, on the passenger side, his riding jacket and helmet.

“One of you takes the Rad Cycle back. Others stay here.” He ordered. The henchmen looked at each other and without words started the motions for rock, paper, scissors. Radiation Lad looked impressed at the collective mindset. The henchman in the driver seat won, his scissors beating the other’s paper.

“Alright Boss!” the Henchman exclaimed

“Don’t have too much fun, Jorge!” The other Henchman said begrudgingly as he handed over the helmet and riding jacket to Jorge. Radiation Lad stepped away as Jorge left and the other henchman switched to the driver’s side.

“Anything else, boss?” the Henchman prompted Radiation Lad

“Just monitor my position on your phone, by the way, Whats your name?”
“It’s Nikolai, sir.”

“Make sure to do your best Nikolai, then you’ll get to joyride the Rad Cycle next.”

“Really?” Nikolai said with excitement in his voice

“Sure.” Radiation Lad said, turning his back away from the van. He began to make his way to the Hero Facility. He could see the massive concrete-glass structure of which it was made. He had formulated that he would meet with the Commissioner and kill Little Devil at that meeting, but he had to get a way to meet with the Commissioner.

He pushed the door in front of him, as it swung, it rung a bell. A lonely secretary perked up to look at him.

“How may I help you sir?” She asked Radiation Lad

“Hello, I was just wondering how I would go about applying for a position here.” Radiation Lad responded, his mind having forgotten his plan in a panic.

“Have you already applied? I swear I’ve seen you before.” The secretary's face turned puzzled.

“No, no, I haven’t. I just wanted to apply for a janitor job or something similar. Part time work.”

“We don’t have any openings for any part-time positions, sorry, but is there anyway I would know you. I seriously know your face. But from where?” The secretary said as she twisted the skin on her chin.

“I’ve been told I have a very common face. Have a nice day.” He turned and made his way to the direction. She took a few seconds to come out of searching for her memory.

“You too!” She said as Radiation Lad exited the doors.

Parking garage, that was the next idea that Radiation Lad felt click into his brain. He guessed it was to the right. He made his way as he formulated his plan, if he could set up a radiation bomb on the commissioners parking spot that triggered by movement he could maybe kill Little Devil also. He had lost track on where he was while in his thoughts. He looked around awkwardly seeing if he had missed the parking garage, but he soon realized that the parking garage was to the left of the doors. He whispered to himself that he was stupid and began walking.

It felt alien to walk into a parking garage, knowing that he had no car in there. He hoped there were elevators to the higher floors, where he figured the parking spot would be, and not stairs. He desired not to walk eight flights of stairs. He made his way straight, glancing at a concrete corner that he hoped was an elevator. He was on the opposite side of the parking spots from it, as he crossed the street, an SUV waited impatiently for him to cross. Radiation Lad quickened to a half-jog and continued that pace to the concrete corner. To his relief, it was an elevator and stairs. He chose the elevator, pressed the button, and ascended to the fourth and final floor. No elevator music comforted him just the hum of an elevator moving upwards. The doors opened and he stepped out.

As soon as he stepped out, he saw a blue sign, clearly stating that the parking spot was for the Commissioner himself. He walked over to the spot, and began setting a trap. He poured radiation from his mind and imagined himself telling it to only activate if it saw this person, imagining Little Devil.

It was set, prepared to kill if all else failed. He leaned on the concrete and looked down on the streets, more people were now crowded upon them. If he wanted the chance to see Little Devil he would have to act now. This motivated him, and he rushed over to the elevator, and pushed the button with urgency.

The door opened, he stepped in, and slapped the ground floor button along with frantically pushing the close door button. His anxiety of failure was kicking in, but he needed to calm down. He took a deep breath, it didn’t help. His heart was pumping faster. He was ready to find her. He felt all of this, but he mainly felt the tinge of sorrow. Radiation Man wasn’t with him, he would no longer guide him.

The elevator stopped, he looked impatiently at the doors. His glare told the doors that he would pry them open himself. They slowly opened, and he pushed himself through them.
