Chapter 5:

The Devil Appears

The City Far from Bliss

As he stepped out of the parking garage, Radiation Lad felt a pang of hunger hit him. He felt rushed, but he could surely wait at the Deli down the street. It gave him distance, and time to spot Little Devil.

The crowds were busier now, it was like a rapid river. People were flowing and running into each other, but in a split second they were back on their way. After crossing the street, Radiation Lad saw that the line for the Deli was out the door. He couldn’t get a delicious sandwich. The anxiety and nerves rushed back to him.

He couldn’t stand still, so he trudged his way to the Deli. He hoped he could at least get a seat and then wait. As he pushed his way through, he caught sight of her. Of the Little Devil, his back felt like it was flaming. He was ready. He walked towards her, trying to look unsuspicious. Radiation Lad planned to run into her and set a radiation bomb on her jacket. He made his way through the crowd and bumped into her.

Her eyes widened, as with realization of who he was. Radiation Lad was starting to activate his aura of radiation to kill her, but was pushed into other people. The three people he was pushed into were irradiated instantly, their bodies charring. Screams of the victims and cries of the crowd as people began to push themselves away from him. Radiation Lad reached into his pocket and pulled out his advanced mask. It would help with the smell of a charring person.

He watched as Little Devil soared upwards a vine connecting to a lamppost. Radiation Lad quickly shot a beam of radiation. The beam bounced off of the metal and shot into the crowd, the screaming was now louder. The streets were filled with people frantically running away. Radiation Lad saw Little Devil go onto the roof, disappear from his sight.

Luckily, he was trained in acrobatics and parkour. He jumped and latched onto the awning. He pulled himself up, carefully as not to rip the fabric. He used the upwards motion to grab onto a protruding brick. Reaching upwards, Radiation Lad loosely grabbed onto a window sill. He used his adrenaline to quickly pull himself upwards. Planting his feet on the window sill, he looked upwards, he just needed to grab onto the roof’s trim. He took a leap of faith upwards and gripped the roof’s trim with his right hand. He swiftly swung his second hand at the sky to latch onto the trim. Using the strength he had now, he was shaking with weakness, he pulled himself upwards.

As his eyes peeked over the trim, he heard the revving of a chainsaw.

“You can’t silence me, Radiation Lad.” she yelled
“Well, don’t you just radiate confidence.” Radiation Lad said as he finished pulling himself upwards, gasping for air, but no time to rest.

Little Devil wildly swung at him. Radiation Lad swerved to the side, teeter-tottering on the edge of the building. He regained his balance and sprinted to the middle of the roof, away from her. He prepared another shot, firing it, the shot bounced off the chainsaw into nowhere. She laughed maniacally as she slowly and meticulously placed down the chainsaw. The chainsaw’s revving came to a sputtering stop, hissing and flowing it.

Little Devil slowly walked towards Radiation Lad. He went to bring his arm up to fire, but it wouldn’t move. He looked down, confused. His arms and legs were wrapped with vines. He looked back up at her.

“Five.” She said, tauntingly as she held up five fingers. She was now practically in front of him.

“Four.” She put down a finger, and leaned towards him.

“Three.” She put down a finger, and kissed him on the forehead.

“Blame me, I’m just better.” She turned around, putting down a finger and began to sprint. Radiation Lad was laced with confusion, but he took this as an opportunity to kill the plants and start chasing after her.

“One.” She yelled, putting down her pointer finger, leaving the middle finger staring at Radiation Lad. He continued to chase, vines grabbed onto her and pulled her to the same light post. She put down the last finger, yet Radiation Lad did not hear her say anything. His ears were overwhelmed with the sounds of an explosive.

His ears were ringing, his head was pounding, and his eyesight was blurry. She had placed an explosive behind the chainsaw. Radiation Lad felt the back of his head, stumbling to do so. It felt warm, warm and painful. He brought his hand back around and found it laced with crimson, some piece of shrapnel had hit him. He wanted to pass out. He wanted to so badly, but he knew if he did a hero would get him. He dragged his feet along to slowly move towards an area where a fire escape should be. His legs hurt, everything hurt, but he had to go on.

Grasping tightly onto the metal, he pulled back and forth on it. He was ungodly tired. Sleep meant death for him. He took each step at a time, hand sliding down the rail. The first flight was down, two more to go. He stopped for a second, felt terribly ill, and puked over the side. He took the next flight, he could feel his phone vibrating. He struggled to perceive where his pocket was and got his hand in after the third try. He grabbed onto the phone, staring at it blankly like it should open by itself. After a solid five seconds, he began typing in his passcode. The screen wasn’t reading his fingers good with the blood now staining it. He was on his phone now, and hit the call henchman button. The dial tone reliving his ears, he could hear sirens now.

“Boss, I heard an explosion, are you okay?” it was Nikolai’s voice

“Backside of the Chamber Street Deli, now.” he ordered

“Yes sir.”

Radiation Lad attempted to slip his phone into his pocket, but ended up crashing his phone on the floor. He gripped the railing and squatted down to pick it up. He decided to hold it in his left hand, as he made his way down the stairs. He leaned against the brick wall, and made his way down the alley. Nikolai saw this and rushed to him, he propped Radiation Lad against his shoulder and took him to the van.

Pulling open the back of the van’s door, Nikolai plopped down Radiation Lad there.

“Just stay awake, Boss.” Nikolai said with much concern. Radiation Lad thought he responded, but he only looked dazed at the top of the van. He fought back the sleepiness, knowing that now, he was safe.
