Chapter 1:

Ren will no longer be alone

Soulmates of loneliness

The Tamashī shelter is a place where boys and girls who were not adopted after reaching adolescence go.

For some, their destiny was decided ahead of time, and they entered directly when they turned 12 and others enter because they have no other choice.

Though, Ren doesn't seem to mind not having a family. Ren is a boy who has been in the shelter for a long time, and as always, he faces the day with joy, although his face does not express it.

Like every weekend, he got up at 8 to take a shower, eat breakfast and then look out the window. And so he continues until noon, eat, and... go back to look out the window. And he repeats the same thing with dinner. At 9 o'clock at night, he prepares to sleep in his bed.
No one knew the reasons why he was looking out the window. In fact, nobody prevented him from leaving the shelter, and every time they took him out he turned around looking at the window of his room, and you had to drag him out of the shelter if you wanted him to forget about the window.

And Sunday comes for Ren expecting to look out his window again, but this time he woke up to the director of the shelter sitting in a chair next to his bed.

-Good morning, Ren. I'm sorry to ruin your plans to look out the window, but I have a surprise for you

Ren, upon hearing the word surprise, got up quickly, and although he did not express any emotion, he seemed happy to hear that word.

-In a few hours a companion will arrive for you and I would like you to do everything possible to make her feel comfortable.

Despite his expressionless face, Ren was very happy. Not only would he have a new partner, but the director put complete trust in him to make his stay at the shelter as ideal as possible.

After getting dressed, Ren looked out the window again, but this time he did have a reason, he was waiting for his new roommate. What the boy did not expect is that his partner had already been inside the building for a while.

The door opened, scaring the boy, this being the first time he has expressed an emotion. The girl was in a wheelchair and was being accompanied by one of the nurses from the shelter.

-I'm sorry… did I scare you? My name is Raku, I'm your partner, what's your name?

The nurse chuckled slightly at Ren's expression and then turned to Raku.

-His name is Ren. Nobody knows why he doesn't speak, but somehow he knows how to communicate what he wants. But if he ever says something, let me know, I'd like to hear it too.

The nurse left, allowing they to get to know each other.

Raku and Ren stared at each other without saying anything. The situation was somewhat awkward, until Ren decided to get closer to Raku.

-So… Your name is Ren… Do you have a surname?

Ren cocked his head at such a question. He seemed to show no idea what the word "surname" meant.

-Oh, sorry, I didn't think that was a bad question. I thought that surely they put me with you because we are in the same situation, but from your answer I see that you have no family...

She said nerviously.

Upon hearing that, Ren nodded, confirming his deduction.
After that, he pointed at her.

-I? Do you mean my family?

Ren nodded again.

-My parents… My parents are dragon hunters, and they have gone to great lengths to take revenge on one that destroyed my house! And as long as they don't come back, I have to stay here.

She lied to her friend.

Ren, for his part, was so naive that he seemed to believe that dragons existed.

Raku, realizing his naivety, believed that it was not good to continue with the lie, but on the other hand, if he said that dragons did not exist, it might ruin his feelings and stop being his friend, so he decided to wait for Ren to forget him with time.
Apparently, the dragon that Raku invented broke through the cold ice between the two of them.

Ren became more sociable with Raku, and they spent the day together. Ren showed Raku all the areas of the shelter with enthusiasm. For the first time, Ren expressed his emotions with his face.

They ate and dined together, further forging their friendship, and when night fell they went to sleep early because tomorrow was Monday, and they had to attend classes.
Raku from her bed, waited for Ren to fall asleep and when she thought she was sure that she was sleeping, she confessed the truth to not feel so bad.

-Ren... I'm sorry I lied to you... neither my parents hunt dragons... nor do dragons exist... they actually...

She closed her eyes, trying to tell him.

-They actually died in a fire that occurred in my house...

When she opened her eyes again she saw that there was no one in Ren's bed and on her back she noticed a sinister look of sadness.
It seems that Ren heard her confession, but Raku can't seem to figure out which she hurt the young man more, her story or the non-existence of dragons.
Luckily, they eventually fell asleep together in the same bed, finally ending this day.
