Chapter 7:

the feast

Beyond the shadows

"hey Jago."

"What?" Jago asked already knowing what Timmy wanted.

"What must I wear to look my best." Timmy asked him.

Timmy was going through all the clothes wondering what to wear. There were his old clothes and the clothes that Leah had bought him and Timmy was having a hard time choosing what to wear.

"Why do you have a pair of jeans out? Were you seriously thinking of wearing it to the feast?" Jago nearly shouted.

"Uhh yes, why?" Timmy asked.

"I give up with you," the demon wailed dramatically. "Let me help you choose."

"That's why I called you." Timmy said in a sort of matter-of-fact voice.

"Quiet, let's go with that, and that anddd… that." Jago said.

"Which ones?" Timmy asked. Jago was telling him but he couldn't show it to him.

The demon emerged as the black mist and floated over to the clothes he wanted.

"These ones," Jago said with a sigh. "Can I return now?"

"Sure." Timmy said holding up the clothes that Jago chose for him.

After bathing and oiling his hair with the hair oil that Leah bought him,Timmy wore the clothes that Jago chose for him. Timmy wondered if he looked great. When he looked in the mirror he felt different. He thought his appearance was changed.

Timmy left his room to go to the dining hall. The dining hall was a large room with long dining tables and there was a dance hall too. In front there was the main desk. It was there were the teachers were seated.

Timmy pulled out a chair and sat at a table. That was all he could do since he didn't know what else to do. He waited for a few minutes before he heard someone speak to him.

"Heyy, hello are you new?" A small squeaky voice said.

Timmy looked at the person who spoke and there was a girl. She was very small framed and her red hair was tied into two ponytails, each on the side of her head. She seemed very cheerful with a charismatic personality.

"Uh yes." Timmy replied. He wondered if the small girl in front of him was learning to fight demons. She seemed too adorable to be cutting up and beating up monsters. Don't judge a book by it's cover Timmy said to himself.

"Can I sit here?" The red haired girl asked."People call me Lizzie by the way, what's your name?"

"Timmy." Timmy answered.

Timmy didn't know if this girl, Lizzie was annoying or just too cute. Well that's what Jago kept asking. Timmy genuinely didn't know.

"Are you a transfer student or a recruit? I guess it's a stupid question to ask considering your age. You're probably a transfer, right? Or are you from some small school or maybe a big academy?" She said ecstatically.

"He's a recruit." Another voice said. Neo appeared and sat across the table.

"Oh big brother, do you know him?" Lizzie asked with her eyes as round as saucers.

"Not really, I just met him once," Neo said folding his hands and shooting daggers across the table. Timmy felt endangered.

"Is he a talent?" Lizzie asked sounding really curious.

"Yes, he is." Neo admitted before speaking to Timmy." are you always this silent."

Timmy shrugged before fiddling with his fingers. Neo was about to ask him another question when a loud voice spread throughout the hall.

"Welcome all students of Crystal Academy, today is the festival known as the day this academy was founded. It was more than a decade ago but today, here we are. Every year we celebrate this day to commemorate the beginning of the great era. The countless heroes who rose from these schools played a major role in protecting mankind including one of the greatest,if not in fact the greatest ever to arise, our beloved principal himself. It's an honour attend and teach at the very school in which he himself had studied. I am very much honoured to be able to speak and raise him today. Back to the main topic,The festival Today is known as the school's anniversary. From now until this festival ends. People will be welcome to feast on the food or to dance in the hall or go into the platform and showcase any personal skills you have. However enjoy yourself. And from this point onwards the festival begins!"

The speaker was a teacher who stood on the platform in front. He spoke without a mic which meant he used spatial magic. The teacher had ginger brown hair with green eyes and wore a green cloak. Underneath it, he had a black suit. His face was almost flawless and countless female students clapped and praised him when he stepped off the platform.

"Who is that?" Timmy asked Neo and Lizzie.

"You don't know?!" Lizzie said letting out a little shriek as she covered her mouth with her hand. "How do you not know?"

Timmy was about to say that it was just because he just didn't know when Neo spoke.

"He's called Professor McKinney. He's an S-class reaper. He graduated from this academy and after being a reaper for a few years returned to become a teacher here. He's a very capable reaper." Neo spoke while trying to hide the admiration in his voice, but it was evident.

"You seem to look up to him," Timmy said folding his hands.

"No I don't," Neo said getting flustered.

"Oh, okay then." Timmy simply said.

"I'm going to look for Leah," Neo said standing up." and don't get up to no good Lizzie."

"Of course, I won't," Lizzie said before turning to speak to Timmy." so you've awakened already? What rank are you?"

"I don't know," Timmy replied, he was hardly paying attention to what Lizzie said as he was observing Professor McKinney.

"Hey! Hey! Are you listening?" Lizzie asked Timmy. Timmy couldn't understand why that girl seemed so attached to him. Maybe she wanted to be friends.

Timmy observed Professor McKinney for a while. Professor McKinney rarely spoke, he would just now and then smile when a person or student spoke to him and he would reply to one or two greetings. Most of the time he'd look as if he was deep in thought. Like he was always thinking about something.

"Hey Lizzie, who are you bothering now?" Someone said.

Timmy turned around to see a girl. She had blonde hair together with pitch black eyes. She was a little tall and she wore round spectacles.

"Ah,amyyy!" Lizzie scream her face full of excitement."I missed you."

"There, there," the girl named Amy said smiling as she patted Lizzie's back."now may I ask the name of this gentleman over here."

"He's Neo's friend! Guess what?he's a recruit! Isn't it amazing!" Lizzie said bouncing like a little girl. One would wonder how she had so much energy in her.

"Oh! Really?" Amy asked as she looked at Timmy's emotionless face.

"Yeah! But doesn't he look like a doll." Lizzie giggled as she played with Timmy's cheeks.

"That's sort of rude Lizzie." Amy said supressing a laugh. Truth be told,he did look like a doll. He hardly even blinked or moved a muscle.

"Hey Timmy, say Hi to Amy," Lizzie said with her face getting serious for once."she's currently single."

"Lizzie!" Amy said covering her cheeks which had turned a shade of bright red. Lizzie spent the next few minutes teasing Amy or asking Timmy countless questions.

Everyone else was either dancing, speaking with friends or eating. There were even people showcasing tricks in the platform in front.

Timmy decided to eat the food in front of him. He busied himself with eating as he listened to Lizzie talk. Timmy hadn't spoke a word with Amy yet,she was listening attentively to Lizzie. It turned out the two were close friends.

"Friends,huh?" Timmy said to himself.

"What Timmy? Did you say something." Lizzie asked turning to him.

"No." Timmy said trying to look away. He had never lied much before so it was hard.

"You're clearly lying aren't you Timmy?" Lizzie said giggling as she pulled Timmy's arm.

"Yes." Timmy said giving up on trying to convince her otherwise.

"Huh? Why'd you lie in the first place if you were going to give up so easily? " Lizzie demanded folding her hands.

"You're too persistent." Timmy said honestly.

"You could have at least lied now." Lizzie said pouting.

"Sorry." Timmy plainly said.

"Heh?Why'd you apologize?" Lizzie whined.

She continued pestering Timmy until she finally became jumpy again. Than she started telling her tales all over again. If Timmy was a person who hardly ever spoke than Lizzie was the ultimate opposite of him.

She was a force to be reckoned with.

Leah spent the night by the VIP tables which were near the platform. She was seated with her family. There were countless questions about how was school. How'd her mission go and much more. Leah just politely answered each question and ate in silence.

Then came Darius Marquis and his family. Leah and his family got along very well but Leah never liked him. He was prideful and boastful and always got on her nerves.

Darius's father and her father greeted each other and she respectfully greeted Darius's parents. Their families sat down and began speaking.

Leah tried to keep to herself and would just respond with smiles and nods when someone spoke to or referred to her. They were speaking a lot about her tonight.

"I heard that your daughter had already awoken, her rank is very impressive for her age. " Darius's father, Marcus said drinking some wine as he spoke.

"She really amazed us, in addition to that attaining a C rank on awakening is pretty rare. " Leah's mother said smiling.

"Yes and in addition to that her skills are exceptional sir, she truly performs in all our classes," Darius spoke trying to seem as polite as possible.

"Your son seems very polite as well Marcus, I heard that he recently awakened. That's very impressive for his age too." Leah's father said observing Darius.

"He barely achieved C class, he did well but in comparison to your daughter he is nothing, Charles." Darius's mother said speaking to Leah's father.

"Your daughter is truly excellent, I heard a rumor that she took down 2 B rank demons single-handedly, I wonder if it's true?" Marcus asked eyeing the girl.

"Well we did hear that she was assigned a special mission but we didn't receive much news on that so I can't confirm if it's true. Is it true dear?" Leah's father, Charles sounded worried as he said that.

"I-I had help actually." Leah hurriedly said. All the eyes from the table were on her.

"Regardless you still took down two B-rank demons which is very impressive." A new voice said.

Everyone turned to see who it was and there stood Jacob, the eldest son of the Marquis household. Next to him was Malcolm the second eldest. They were the pride of the Marquis household and were both S-class reapers.

"Oh Jacob, Malcolm, it's an honor to meet you too," Charles said standing to greet the brothers."I never expected to meet you two here."

"Oh you praise us too much sir, your being here is much more important than anything. We are graced by your presence." Jacob said smiling. Malcolm just nodded.

The brothers sat down and soon the table was full of discussions. Just when Leah was about to sigh in relief for not being the topic at the table, Darius mentioned her again.

"Brother, did you already hear about Leah before you came here? What demon did she defeat?" Darius asked his brother.

Oh my god, I want to kill that child Leah thought to herself. She forced a smile and started angrily bringing down the fork on her food. Malcolm just watched her.

"Beast ape apparently, a high-rank one and a low-rank one," Jacob said as he feasted on his food. "Reports say that she did receive help but I'm not so sure if it's true. Nevertheless, she brought down two B-rank beasts which is a great feat."

"It is a great feat," Marcus said To Charles. "You have a talent in your hands."

"What rank was the person who was there with her?" Charles asked.

"He had just awoken apparently," Jacob said thinking hard.

"Well now that we think about it, she probably did all the work," Darius said smiling his annoying smile which Leah hated so much.

"That's enough about Leah for today," Malcolm said finally speaking. "We'll just have to wait and see what the future holds, it's too early to jump to assumptions. Let's not pressurize her."

"Too true, too true," Jacob said going back to his food.

"So then where's your wife today Charles?" Marcus asked Darius.

Charles had begun getting annoyed with Marcus. He just replied saying, "Well she got caught up with some work and will arrive with her daughter later."

"I haven't seen her in a while," Marcus said.

"Haven't seen who?"

Again all the heads turned to see who arrived.

Darius's mother, Rachel stood up and spoke.

"Speak of the devil."
