Chapter 4:
Soulmates of loneliness
The one who came was the shelter's psychologist, Miss Chihiro. She came to remind Ren that after study time, he had to go to his weekly appointment. Since Ren didn't have a phone, Chihiro must be in charge of going to notify the clueless boy, because the times she didn't, Ren didn't come, and he was distracted as always, looking at the window.
Ren upon seeing the psychologist gave her a big hug as he always did when he saw her. She and the nurse were the only people who interacted with Ren as usually.
The psychologist before the hug had an empty look, letting herself be hugged, but deep down she liked that he did that. Chihiro has a hard-shelled exterior.
While she was being hugged, Chihiro noticed what Ren was doing during study time. It wasn't the first time she saw him looking for clues about the woman in the photo, but it was the first time he saw that he was being helped by someone else.
Chihiro left after completing her mission to notify Ren, and he returned with Raku to continue looking for clues. Although there was nothing else to advance, his investigation.
Study time ended and Ren had to separate from his partner to go to his appointment with the psychologist.
He knew perfectly well what he should do when entering. He lies on the sofa and waits for the psychologist.
On a side table, he had a notebook and a pen, which Ren always used to communicate with the psychologist.
The psychologist entered the consultation with a dragon mask, because she, as always did, tried to make him feel comfortable and also to make him say something, even if it was to make fun of her appearance.
-Well, Ren, how are you? I heard you have a roommate
Ren did not react to such a mask, as he always did.
The psychologist thought that perhaps his memory had improved, since she always wears the same mask when entering. But what she didn't know is that Raku revealed to Ren that dragons no longer existed.
Ren grabbed the notebook and wrote “Chihiro”.
Chihiro took off her mask with a serious look and noted in his psychologist's notebook.
-Well, I see that you have discovered that this is a mask. It's been 4 years for this to happen.
Deep down, Chihiro wanted to continue using it and see his usual reaction like before. She had adoration for Ren and his usual demeanor.
Ren cocked his head and wrote on his notebook, "Raku revealed to me that dragons don't exist".
-Raku? Is she your partner? Don't you think it's wrong to be spoiled by your illusion?
Chihiro is trying to see if Ren got along with his partner, or if their relationship was neutral.
Ren shook his head and showed a smile.
-Wow, I see you've made a lot of progress, maybe we won't see each other around here anymore.
Hearing that, Ren got up and rushed to her to hug her tight with teary eyes.
-Calm down Ren... I said maybe... Go back to your place, please...
Ren returned to the sofa calmly and continued with his session.
Chihiro grabbed the notebook from her without her noticing and hid it behind her back.
-Well, Ren, I'm glad you've made a good friend, but I don't know her. What can you tell me about her?
Ren put his hand on the side table looking for the notebook, but when he saw that it wasn't there, he looked at Chihiro with teary eyes, believing that he had lost an object that did not belong to him.
-What happens Ren? Is something wrong?
Ren believed that he had lost something, and he knew that he had to ask for forgiveness, but for that he had to speak. Ren opened his mouth and Chihiro, seeing that, moved a little to get closer to him. As she did so, he saw the notebook and took it happily.
He started to write and showed to her a text that said “Raku is a good friend and by the way, sorry for losing the notebook”.
Chihiro always did the same trick to try to get him to talk, but Ren seemed to have incredible luck and always returned with the notebook,
Chihiro sighed and looked at Ren.
-Ren, you should try to talk without the notebook… Or at least tell me why you don't talk. I've been dealing with you for years, and you don't seem to even remember why you stopped talking. You haven't spoken for 16 years, or that's what they told me in the orphanage, but I know that you can make sounds and that you understand me, so I know that you also speak.
Chihiro grabbed the notebook again and put her ear close to Ren's mouth.
-If you want, it can be a secret conversation, whatever you want.
Ren put his lips close to Chihiro's ear and began to whisper to her about what he had been doing all week.
Chihiro inside felt like she was a mother listening to her son's first words.
After that conversation, Ren came back with his notebook and wrote, “This is all I've ever done”.
Chihiro was in shock, as she had heard Ren for the first time and didn't know how to react. On the inside she was excited, but on the outside she was still a very serious and professional person.
-Well... Emm... Wow, you've done a lot of things... I mean... I don't know how much you look out the window... but... but what you did for Raku was very brave of you, believe it or not... ehem…
Chihiro settles down again and sat back in her chair. The phone alarm sounded, indicating that the session was over.
