Chapter 5:

Ren visits the snow woma... SHUT UP!

Soulmates of loneliness

It had already been a week since Ren and Raku had met.

They had forged a great friendship all this time.

One night, Ren heard Raku making strange noises. Concerned, he approached to her bed to see what was happening.

Ren saw that Raku's face was very red and that a lot of heat emanated from her forehead.

Ren knew that Raku had a cold, but he didn't know what to do. It's the first time that he saw another person was sick.

Ren quickly realized that there was someone that could help.

Ren very carefully took Raku in his arms and put her in her wheelchair.

-Ren... What's going on?...

Raku was quite heavy, so she fell forward. Luckily, Ren stopped her from falling off the wheelchair.

Ren needed some way to carry Raku without her falling out of her chair.

He searched and searched until he found one of his belts.

He strapped Raku to the wheelchair and prepared to run, but he remembered Raku's rule

"-No running! A wheelchair is not a toy or a vehicle. If it breaks, I won't be able to move anymore."

Ren slowly went through the corridors, but Raku was complaining more and more.

-Hmf!...

He got so desperate for not knowing what to do in this situation that he almost cursed. But luckily, Ren didn't say it.

He needed to go fast, but he couldn't run with the wheelchair, so he untied her, grabbed her in his arms, and ran down the halls.

He ran as fast as he could to get to the infirmary.

Inside the infirmary was the nurse Oyuki Onna, who was sleeping in his office because she had to do the night shift this time.

Oyuki was the same nurse who brought Raku into the room, and she was also Chihiro's friend.
Everyone confuses the name "Oyuki Onna" with "Yuki-onna", the snow woman. And Ren thought that the nurse might be able to give her some coolness to bring down her fever.

Ren entered the infirmary and saw that nurse Oyuki was asleep.

It seems Ren wasn't as lucky today as he used to be.

Ren put Raku on a stretcher and walked over to Oyuki. He moved her chair impatiently as his friend needed her help.

Oyuki woke up quickly upon noticing the movements of her chair.

-HEY?! What's wrong?!... Ah... It's you Ren... What's wrong with you this time?...

Ren took Oyuki's hand, which apparently is quite cold, and took her to where her sick friend was resting.

-Wow, so is a strong cold... Wait! How many times do I have to tell you? Just because my hands are cold, and I've dyed my hair white, doesn't mean I'm a snow woman. My name is Oyuki. O-Y-U-K-I…

The nurse sighed.

-I don't even know why I try, you always forget... Everybody forgets!... Let me see… Wait! Ren, turn around.

Ren turned around.

Oyuki undressed Raku, put the thermometer on her and dried the sweat from her body.

Once the thermometer beeped, she grabbed it and looked at the temperature.

-Wow… 38.3 °C… Don't worry Ren. Go back to your room and rest. Tomorrow morning, I'll let you visit her.

She approaches to Ren and winks at him.

-Don't worry, I won't tell anyone that you've skipped study time. If anyone asks, I'll say I'm teaching you my job.

Said the nurse, whispering.

Ren went to her room.
In the hallway, he found Raku's wheelchair and wheeled it into the room. He planned to bring it to her tomorrow.

He lay down on the bed but couldn't catch sleep. Then, he got up, sat in Raku's wheelchair, and slowly fell asleep sitting there.

The next morning, Ren woke up, he saw that Raku was not there and that he was in her wheelchair.

He paused to try to remember, and quickly remembered that Raku was in the infirmary.

Ren slowly went through the halls carrying the wheelchair with no one riding in it.

He went to the shelter dining room and grabbed food for himself and his friend. And slowly, he went back to walking carefully through the halls.

Ren entered the infirmary, seeing that Raku was already awake and talking with the nurse.

-Oh! Look who's here, Raku. And it seems that he brings fruit for breakfast. It will be good for you to eat something so that later you can go to “that place”.

Oyuki said as she got up.
The nurse left, leaving them alone. Although in reality, she was behind the door gossiping. It seemed unfair that her friend Chihiro had listened to Ren's voice, and she hoped to be lucky today.

-Thank you very much for yesterday and for the food Ren... If it weren't for you, it would have been worse...

Ren smiled in appreciation and grabbed a chair to sit next to her.

-The "snow nurse" has also taken care of me quite well. I had thought that if I recover properly, later we could go to the mall to buy "Yuki" a present.

Behind the door there was a very strong blow from someone who had fallen to the ground that scared both of them and someone crying in the corridor.

-Wow, it seems that someone has done a lot of damage…

Raku said.
After that, Ren gave the food to Raku, and they had breakfast together.

While Ran and Raku were having breakfast, in the corridors, there was the psychologist Chihiro, who saw the nurse Oyuki crying on the floor.

-Everything is alright? Oyuki seems somewhat pale.

Chihiro after that let out a small giggle.

-You look like a snow woman. Your parents chose your name well, don't you think?

Oyuki cried even more, but Chihiro walked over to her and gave her a hug.

-Come on, don't cry. I don't care that you're dead. Come on, I invite you to a coffee, and so we warm up your body a bit.

Chihiro and Oyuki went to the dining room together for a coffee, and while they drank, Oyuki didn't stop berating her friend for stopping the jokes about her name.

[FUN FACT: "Oyuki" also means "snow woman".]
