Chapter 36:

Morning After Mischief

Fangs and Facades

Silently, Akane slipped into the office that once belonged to her mother, the former superintendent of Yamazora High School. It was late, and the school was eerily quiet. No one knew she was there, and that's the way she liked it. The room was filled with remnants of a life that Akane was barely a part of. Family photos, certificates of achievement, small trinkets - tokens of a time before she was turned into a vampire. A time she barely remembered.

Her eyes scanned the room, landing on a small, worn stuffed elephant, affectionately named Ellie, resting on a shelf. She picked it up, her fingers tracing over the faded fabric. Ellie had been her constant companion in her childhood, a reminder of simpler times. But that life had been stolen from her.

"Kept these, did you?" she snarled, throwing the stuffed animal across the room. The photos, the drawings, and now Ellie? Her mother had preserved these fragments of a past life while abandoning her own daughter. The bitter irony was a burning rage in Akane's gut.

"Everyone else should know what it feels like to lose something," Akane muttered, her gaze hardened with a frightening determination. She was ready to make the twins, especially Yuna, feel her pain.

Meanwhile, across the school grounds in a room filled with the remnants of an unusual evening, Mika and Yuna were fast asleep...

In the depths of their dreams, Mika and Yuna's vampire sides were wide awake. They stood in an ethereal landscape, a mental plane that connected them. This was their meeting ground, their space to strategize away from their human selves.

Mika's vampire broke the silence, her voice carrying an edge of concern. "Our control... it's slipping. Their love for Saori and Akira is causing it to erode."

Yuna's vampire shrugged, a hint of arrogance flashing in her eyes. "So what? Love or no love, we're still the stronger ones. We have centuries of experience and power."

"But that's just it," Mika's vampire shot back, her fear starting to seep into her voice. "The twins... their powers are growing. If they were to truly try, they could suppress us. Keep all our abilities without needing us to take over."

"That's... impossible," Yuna's vampire scoffed, clearly not believing her. "We need blood to survive, to function. They've been raised to know that."

"But that's just propaganda we've used for centuries. To maintain control. To avoid becoming prisoners in our own bodies," Mika's vampire said, her voice trembling. "The truth is, we don't need blood to survive. It enhances our abilities, yes, but... we can live without it. If the twins learn that..."

"Then we'll deal with it," Yuna's vampire interjected, her voice strong and confident. "We always do. There's no challenge we can't overcome."

Mika's vampire looked at her, a heavy silence settling between them. Yuna's arrogance, once comforting in its certainty, now felt like a ticking time bomb. Especially with Akane plotting against them. For the first time, Mika's vampire felt a true sense of fear.

"Quite the scene, isn't it?" Yuna's voice was groggy, her eyes barely open as she sat up.

Mika jumped, turning to face her twin. Yuna's gaze was fixed on Akira, a broad grin etched on her face. "I thought Akira was on the sofa when we went to bed," she said, her voice thick with amusement.

Mika's face went scarlet. "She... she was," she stuttered, her mind racing to find an excuse. But then Akira woke up, stretching luxuriously and yawning.

“Mmm, morning,” she said sleepily. Then, as if just realizing she was the topic of conversation, blinked up at Yuna and Mika. “Hope you don’t mind, Yuna," she said, motioning down to the oversized nightshirt she was wearing - one of Yuna's. As she stretched, the nightshirt shifted, offering Mika a fleeting glimpse of bare skin underneath.

"My clothes got... uh... a bit wet last night,” Akira continued. At Mika's shocked expression, she laughed, “And before your imagination runs wild, yes, I’m just in the nightshirt. Nothing underneath. I always sleep like this. Sorry if I shocked you.”

Akira's words hung in the air, and Yuna erupted into laughter, Saori joining her a moment later. Mika's face burned brighter, her stuttering intensifying. "We... we didn't... I didn't... I..."

"Oh, Mika," Akira said, giggling. "Your face!" She rolled onto her back, her laughter echoing through the room. After a few minutes, she managed to compose herself, wiping a tear from her eye. "But sorry I didn't ask before borrowing your shirt, Yuna."

Her confession only served to amplify Yuna and Saori's laughter. Even Mika, despite her embarrassment, found herself unable to hold back a smile. But a small voice in the back of her mind couldn't help but wonder if something did happen... was her memory failing her?

"Mika," Akira said, noticing the confusion on her face. "Nothing happened, okay? Trust me, if something had... you'd remember it."

And with that, the room was filled with laughter once again, loud and unrestrained, punctuated only by the occasional banging from the neighbor on the other side of the wall.

"No, seriously," Akira's giggles faded as she sat up, pulling the covers around her. "We didn't do anything. I promise."

"But... but the shirt," Mika managed to stutter out, her mind a whirl of confusion and embarrassment.

Akira sighed dramatically, rolling her eyes. "It was just a shirt, Mika. I borrowed it because I needed something to sleep in, nothing more. Nothing scandalous happened."

"But... but you're..." Mika tried again, her cheeks still burning.

"Naked under the shirt?" Akira finished for her, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "Yes, I am. I always sleep like this. But nothing happened, okay? No matter what your crazy imagination is telling you."

Just then, Akira stretched, and her borrowed nightshirt lifted just enough to reveal her bare chest. Mika's eyes widened and she started to stutter again, her face turning a brighter shade of red.

"I-I-You-We..." Mika was practically babbling now, her mind a whirlwind of confusion and mortification.

"Nothing happened," Akira said again, a mischievous smile playing on her lips. She leaned in, her lips grazing Mika's ear. "Yet."

The room erupted into laughter once again, even Mika joining in this time. It was hard to stay embarrassed when everyone was laughing so hard, even if she was the subject of the joke. It felt... good. It felt like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders, replaced with a lightness she hadn't felt in a long time.

As the laughter subsided, Yuna turned to Saori, her eyes shining with mirth. "I think it's safe to say that Mika won't be teasing us about our relationship for a while."

"Agreed," Saori replied, her own laughter dying down to a chuckle. "I think we've successfully turned the tables on her."

"I hate you all," Mika groaned, but she couldn't keep the smile off her face. She could feel the warm heat of Akira next to her, and she couldn't help but relish in the closeness. It was a moment of pure joy, a moment of peace amidst the chaos that had consumed their lives recently.

"Alright," Akira finally said, her laughter subsiding. "I think it's time we all got dressed and started our day. Right, Mika?"

Mika shot her a look, but it was more playful than annoyed. "Only if you promise to stop teasing me," she retorted, trying to sound stern but failing as a giggle escaped her.

"No promises," Akira shot back, her eyes sparkling with amusement.

And with that, they all began to prepare for the day, the tension from earlier gone and replaced with a newfound camaraderie and understanding. It was a new day, and despite the threats looming over them, they felt more united and stronger than ever.
