Chapter 2:

Choices in the Shadows

Silent Shards

The sun descended, cloaking the sky in a shroud of mysterious purple hues, an enigmatic aura filled the air, mirroring the thoughts stirring within me. The encroaching darkness veiled my surroundings, leaving me disoriented and unable to fathom the events unfolding. What had once seemed like a whimsical play now appeared far from amusing. It was at that moment when Tara, having completed her duties of locking up the store, approached the nearby shelf to place a book.

Unbeknownst to her, she glanced past me, her gaze fixated on the entrance to her own house. An unsettling feeling of despair slowly dripped into my mind, as fear clawed its way up my spine. It was then that my eyes caught sight of one of the books adorning the shelf, beckoning me to delve into its contents.

Curiosity getting the better of me, I reached out and took hold of the book, allowing my eyes to navigate its pages. Suddenly, the words inscribed within resonated deeply within me, as if depicting a situation all too relatable. "You have become neither physical nor spiritual, a mere nonentity in this world. No recognition, no solace, only grief, and despair await. Will you wander or transcend?" The meaning eluded me initially, but a flicker of interest ignited within, urging me to scrutinize the passage further.

As the puzzle pieces slowly fit together, fear washed over me, the gravity of the situation sinking in. Thoughts consumed me, and questions erupted from my lips, "What in the world is happening to me?"

Just then, a faint glimmer materialized before me, casting a surreal blend of purple and orange reminiscent of the evening sky. A glimmer of hope flickered within, but my optimism was short-lived when the apparition began to laugh, a sound that sent chills down my spine.

"Hahaha! You are foolish human, you have fallen victim to the Jackers," the ethereal light mocked.

The laughter offered me no solace, but I mustered the courage to seek answers, "Who are you? Where are you speaking from?"

The light, existing solely within its radiant form, replied with an air of enigmatic authority, "I am your watcher, an observer in this realm."

"Watcher? What does that entail? You mentioned the Jackers and my becoming their victim. I implore you to enlighten me, for confusion consumes me," I pleaded, my voice trembling.

In its own enigmatic fashion, the watcher began to shed light on the dire circumstances, "Let me commence from the beginning. Jackers are insidious creatures that hack into the very essence of human existence, devouring their past, present, and future identities. Reduced to mere silent shards, victims are stripped of their physical and spiritual attributes, abandoned and forgotten by the world. That is all I can reveal about the Jackers at this time."

As comprehension slowly dawned, the enigma surrounding my predicament started to lift. Still, a surge of curiosity coursed through me, compelling me to seek further understanding, "Is there any way to thwart the Jackers and reclaim my existence?"

"Some Jackers abscond after ravaging their victims, leaving no trace behind. Their existence remains a mystery, and their whereabouts remain unknown. Unfortunately, you have fallen prey to them this evening, much like how darkness engulfs the sun's rays. The Jacker has stripped you of everything, leaving you bereft, yet somehow alive. It is a tragic fate," the watcher disclosed.

Though apprehension gripped me, my thoughts turned to my mother, siblings, and aunt, even if they remained oblivious to my plight. Determined to find a way back, I beseeched, "What course of action should I take?"

The watcher, devoid of a given name, assured me of its guidance, "That is where I come in, your watcher. You may address me as you wish."

Continuing, it elucidated, "Now, to the main point of the matter: as the book alluded, you must make a choice—remain a wandering entity in this world, unseen and unrecognized, or embark on a journey to another realm where other victims reside."

Perplexed, I sought clarification, "What do you mean?"

"Just as it sounds, you can choose to roam this world as a specter, a presence unnoticed by all, or venture into another realm where kindred spirits dwell," it presented the options before me.

The pieces of the puzzle fell into place, the first option lost its appeal. Driven by the desire to understand the Jackers and reclaim my place in the world, I responded, my voice resolute, "I choose the second option. But how can you facilitate my passage to this other realm?"

The watcher corrected my assumption, its ethereal glow pulsating gently, "No, no, you have misunderstood. I am but a watcher, an observer of your journey. It is you who must navigate the path to the other realm through the Archway to The Beyond. There, you shall face four tests, and upon completion, your destiny shall be unveiled."

With newfound determination and a glimmer of hope, I found the strength to assert, "Lead me there, wherever it may be."

"Certainly, Anant," the watcher affirmed.

Before I could voice my astonishment at its knowledge of my name, a wormhole-like portal materialized, its enticing pull drawing me in. I stood there, staring at the mesmerizing wormhole before me, a whirlwind of emotions swirled within. The eerie glow of the portal seemed to pulsate with otherworldly energy, beckoning me toward an unknown fate. Uncertainty gripped me, intermingled with a tinge of excitement and agitation.

With a deep breath, I stepped forward, allowing myself to be drawn into the spiraling vortex. It felt as though time itself had lost its meaning as I was transported through the fabric of reality. Colors and shapes blurred into a surreal cosmic dance around me, and a sense of weightlessness enveloped my being.

The watcher expressed, "Fool, stay attentive and not disregard the hue of my radiance."

"Yes, I understood," I replied, maintaining my focus on its luminosity.

At that very moment, as I approached the end of the swirling vortex, I thought I would find myself transported to an entirely new world. However, to my surprise, an impenetrable darkness shrouded the surroundings. I floated steadily and cautiously, my movements deliberate as I took in the eerie atmosphere.

Perplexed by the unfamiliarity, I couldn't help but inquire, "What is this place we have arrived at?"

The watcher, their voice resonating with authority, responded, "This is the realm where the Archway to the Beyond exists."

Seeking further understanding, I pressed on, "But what exactly is this Archway to the Beyond?"

Suddenly, a strange voice pierced through the air, distinct from that of the watcher, and declared, "It serves as a gateway."
