Chapter 9:

Perplexing Encounter

Silent Shards

I stood there, utterly perplexed by the creature's incomprehensible speech. I couldn't even grasp the faintest idea of who it was or what it wanted. However, one thing became clear—its peculiar way of expressing itselves hinted that it would be a formidable adversary.

Before I could gather my thoughts or formulate a response, the creature swiftly moved it hand through the air, clearly anticipating my next move. Reacting to it signal, Sylphalope yanked me away from the danger, leading me to a safer distance. As I looked ahead, my eyes widened in disbelief—vines were slithering towards me, as if attempting to capture me within their leafy grip.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?" I exclaimed, my voice laced with frustration and confusion.

But the creature seemed far behind in comprehending my words, its actions only adding to the already bewildering situation. A strange smile played on its lips, while tears streamed down its eyes. It was an incongruous display, leaving me even more puzzled. Moreover, uncertainty gnawed at me—was this even a trial? If so, why hadn't Lula made any announcements? And where was the watcher in all of this?

Amidst the chaos swirling in my mind, a soothing voice pierced through the clamor and reached my ears, offering a glimmer of solace. "Master, do not tremble! As long as you have me, you can fight," it whispered.

"Fight? But how?" I questioned, my voice tinged with a hint of desperation. "I won't deny that my body is adaptable, but I have never fought anyone before."

"Don't worry," Sylphalope reassured me, her voice filled with determination. "Just take hold of me and let us show that creature a taste of the same fear you have felt."

Frustration coursing through my veins, I realized I had no other choice but to follow Sylphalope's guidance. She transformed herself back into a dagger, now a short-range weapon perfectly suited for close combat. Though I lacked experience, I hoped that with Sylphalope's assistance, I could synchronize my movements and tap into my inherent agility, even if not with flawless precision just yet.

The creature before me exuded an air of incomprehensibility, as if its very nature defied understanding. Consequently, its behavior remained enigmatic and unaffected. However, in a sudden burst of movement, it charged towards me with alarming speed. Countless sinewy vines extended from its body, slithering and snaking through the air, as if eager to ensnare me in their grasp. Yet, in my hand, Sylphalope had transformed into a gleaming dagger, infusing me with a heightened sense of agility.

With a calm but firm voice, Sylphalope guided me through the chaotic encounter. "Assume a slashing stance and remain nimble. Evade the lashing vines and strike when the opportunity arises," she advised.

Taking her words to heart, I mirrored her instructions, moving with synchronized precision. I found myself face-to-face with the creature, its unnerving expression still etched upon its features. A shiver ran down my spine as I contemplated the eerie sight. To protect myself, I adopted a defensive posture, meticulously severing each vine that threatened my safety, all the while maintaining a cautious distance.

Finally, a transformation occurred within the creature. Its expression shifted, contorting into a wide, unsettling smile. Before my eyes, fiery spikes emerged from the tips of the vines, forming a menacing sphere that hovered ominously in the air, somehow tethered to the creature's appendages.

My trepidation grew as I witnessed this unsettling metamorphosis. "What is it planning now?" I muttered under my breath, a mixture of fear and curiosity swirling within me.

Sylphalope, always one step ahead, provided a glimpse of insight. "Perhaps it has relinquished the notion of close combat, opting instead for long-range tactics. Be prepared and ready to move at my command," she predicted, her words tinged with a touch of urgency.

As anticipated, the creature unleashed a relentless barrage of spiked projectiles toward my position. I swiftly engaged in a dance of evasive maneuvers, frantically cutting through some spikes while agilely dodging others. However, it seemed futile. No matter how many spikes I severed or avoided, the creature continued to generate an inexhaustible supply.

A sense of desperation gripped my chest, weighing heavily upon me. It was then that Sylphalope made a decisive move, closing off one of her abilities, a move that held potential in this perilous situation.

Though aware of the risks involved, I steeled my resolve. The plan became clear: I would charge headlong towards the creature, closing the distance between us to launch a fierce attack. Despite my aversion to that unnerving visage, I sprinted forward, my path hindered by the explosive remnants and debris.

Finally, within striking range, I noticed something peculiar about the creature—an opening, a vulnerability that beckoned. Seizing the opportunity, I aimed my blade at its solar plexus and delivered a decisive blow. In an instant, the creature disintegrated into a cloud of dust, leaving me bewildered and searching for answers.

Confusion clouded my thoughts as I attempted to comprehend the enigma of what I had just witnessed.

Sylphalope transformed back into her original form, observing the bewildered expression on my face. Concerned, she inquired, "What happened, master? We were able to defeat it."

"Yes, you're right, but..." I paused, gathering my thoughts before continuing.

To my surprise, the one standing before me bore a striking resemblance to someone I knew well—Lula. It was not just the visual similarities, but the familiar scent that filled the air. It was as if she had returned. Introducing herself, she drew closer and said, "You must be wondering about something, right?"

Sylphalope instinctively positioned herself protectively and questioned, "Who are you now? Why are you causing trouble to my master?"

With a confident yet mysterious smile, she revealed her true identity. "Well, I am Meas, the Guardian of this realm. Even the creature you just defeated belonged to me," she declared.

I nodded, connecting the dots. "Ah, that explains why you resemble Lula and share her scent," I remarked, but her demeanor shifted upon hearing the name.

An unexpected intensity entered her gaze as she approached me, holding my chin gently. She leaned in and whispered, "Young Boy, do not compare me to that old hag."

I understood the unspoken message and nodded in acknowledgment. "Apologies, Meas. I didn't mean to offend. Can you please try to be less intimidating?" I requested.

Releasing her grip, Meas stepped back, allowing me some space. I took the opportunity to ask her, "So, what was all of this about? Can you explain it to me?"

Meas paused for a moment, collecting her thoughts before she began to unravel the mysteries that had unfolded before us.
